Microsoft and Samsung demos "Xbox display"

Phone rings. Now what?

Anyway cool concept. I use a set of Cyborg Gaming lights on my PC. I really do like the effect and would love to see expansion on the idea. It doesn't have to be projector flinging stuff all over the walls, just setting some ambiance.

Pause and take off the headset? Lol.

Da hell is this? I cannot understand what is happening..

It's what you could get if you actually merged this with an Oculus Rift style headset. Actually, an AR-version of that.

Through AR goggles you could see the type of thing the camera sees in that video. 3D projection mapped effects and stuff.

But the projector would have to be good quality. And the AR goggles good too. And it would probably be more environment dependent than simpler effects.

I was talking about those rumors
http://***************/2012/11/29/r...y-hardware-and-third-party-softwear-next-gen/ // yeah banned site ;p dual pixels

You know, that is actually pretty damn accurate huh, and also about the Orbis rumor. Remember how the giant ring around Sony's CES hall is displaying GT5. Could this rumor actually have some merit. It kind of adds up. Orbis - circle, the ring. The only thing is that it seems like it would all be much more expensive than the source claims.

Haha was thinkin, what if they use this to project ads on the walls while you are playing a game or watching a movie.

There are no clear walls in the video? tbh I think the "ripple" effect is the best, only seem to work with stuff around.

Ah, okay, what's the "lense" looking thing in front of it?

It's like those video installations they do in the street where they project onto a building and it comes alive. Kinect will be scanning the room which will create the basic geometry of your room in the Xbox, and then the Xbox can work out how to skew the image so it projects naturally onto the objects in your room.

That shimmery bookcase would probably take an image of your room and distort it before reprojecting it back.

All very cool but I don't know how practical. The kinect and projector would have to be aligned for example, and you'd need to be carful about casting shadows or obscuring the projected image.

I can't figure out where it would be projecting from, it's hitting the front of the cupboard so it can't be the position where the kinect is located.

Just saying I'm not going to mount a discoball to my ceiling for what I consider a mediocre effect that isn't functional during day time.

It could work for certain genres. I think racing games for example could work well.

I'm skeptical but I keep an open mind.

I find it funny how gamers who want innovation are largely the same ones who are quick to call something a gimmick and then dismiss it completely.
Thanks. They showed it with mostly hardcore style stuff as well. I just don't get it sometimes.

I can see the appeal of something like this. It's like those virtual rides at Universal studios-- once you start looking at something fixed in the environment the whole 'ride' effect is gone. Also why the feeling of motion is so hard to get across on a tv or monitor. This thing kind of takes away the static nature of everything around the screen so there are fewer cues to tell you that you are not really moving.

That said, I can already be pretty happy with 20" monitor so this might not be for me.

Don´t know if is good. Is more about the TV and graphics getting harder to make the same jump from PS2 to PS3/360 era. So they invest in Kinect, projection etc.

So I showed this to my parents and they were blown away.

If this really come to be a part of the Next Xbox, it's going to awe a lot of people.

Oh I think we'll have a similar jump with the next gen. Whether or not people recognize it is another question.

the projector is probably behind the player, to project towards the screen. And the kinect may be at the same place if it scans the environment in real time (it has to "see" the surface that is used for projection too). Although it's also possible to "scan" the room first by moving around the kinect, and use a fixed projection model (and put back the kinect near the TV, facing the user).

I thought this was stupid until I saw the video. Definitely some of the screen extension stuff was bad, but there were some really neat uses that could be used to enhance games quite nicely. Coupled with the Kinnect, there certainly seem like there could be some really cool uses of this. Now I'm hyped to see the battle between Sony/MS for next-gen interaction.

In the second video you can see the resolution of the projected stuff is really low and the framerate seems worse too. Research project I know, but those things would kill the immersion.

We will def have the visual jump next gen but stuff like this is cool too. This and the Rift show so much potential. It may not work but atleast they are trying. I want some stuff like this rather then just upgraded graphics. Stuff like this is atleast has the potential to be immersive instead of the 'you are the controller' or move bullshit.

I think MS sort of has some of this figured out when it comes to aim. A hardcore gamer would love RPG elements in that kind of thing while a casual gamer would love the WOW of it.
Glasses and such are insular and always will be and this allows for a larger social aspect for those who would want it. Then glasses come later(if they hold to their blueprint).

Pretty much my thoughts.

This times a million. Personally, I think it looks pretty neat, could have some uses. Whatever. But to casuals? This thing could really knock their socks off like Wii Sports did. MS could be on to something huge here with the right party/family game.

You wouldn't need a high resolution for peripheral vision (I don't know about framerate though). The retina is natively low res on the sides of your field of view (but more sensitive to motion), that's why you can't read a book that would be at 45° of your line of sight.

And casuals would see this, and, correct or not, would many times be thinking DUDE I don't need a 60 inch tv. Not that that is the point nor correct. But it gets casuals to thinking outside the box(excuse the weird wording). And the hardcore can have immersion in some of their games they like.
Racing
FPS
RPG's
Would all benifit.

Sports(Seeing the crowd all around you while in a replay or in a low level view)
Christ Football! Gotdamn!

Couple this with a basic football or soccer game using KinectN and you have a full immersion freakshow.

Gimmiky but nice to have for everybody.

I think Augmented Reality glasses is better and can do everything this does. If Sony is able to come out with the Omni glasses with the system for an affordable price, they will dominate no matter how weaker their system is.

I'm pretty sure a low framerate would act distracting, for example I'm able to tell display refresh rates by looking away from a screen but still in my peripheral vision, I will see the flicker that my gaze won't.

Fifa would be beneficial. The zoomed in view of the game can sometimes screw you up if you're not constantly aware of the radar/all of your players. The obvious solution is the zoomed-out view, but having a player's color on the side of the tv at regular zoom (even at low-low res) would be amazing.

Exactly.
Love the sparks flying off the screen though. So ambient and effects might work good for me, expanding the full view maybe not so much.

Also I think we might need a title change?

Seems like a gimmick. Besides im already gaming on a 90 inch projector screen and that up close enough that i dont need shit popping out the sides.

I do see a lot of potential in the oculus rift, especially for hardcore gamers that mostly play alone.

Looks gimicky. Also after those Steel Batalion commercials, I dont believe nothing from MS. They openly lied and deceived customers whit those promos.

Man, I don't know why, but I feel bad for Nintendo after watching this. MS seems as ambitious as *uck with their gaming division right now, meanwhile Nintendo comes out with a semi-conservative home device. Wether this MS-Samsung tech renders fruitition is another story, nevertheless one wonders how the heck a comparatively small company like Nintendo will survive in the next gen home console market against a behemoth such as Microsoft, heck even maybe Sony.

Meh. Seems like the gimmick of gimmicks.

Unless they release a piece of software that shows why this is cool and its worthwhile, then yeah, it means nothing.

Dance Central made Kinect worthwhile.

Both MS and Sony are going to offer glasses next gen. We will see how their tech compares.

I keep seeing Rift comments but I thought that was a dev concept, lower resolution and in your straight vision versus something like this versus on the peripheral. In all honesty they don't feel connected at all.
Ignoring the fact that Sony and MS both seem to have plans for glasses obviously.

Oh man. That would be cool.

It would be cool. As would Rez/Child of Eden/Geometry Wars/Racing Games etc, which is why it's weird to me that with the anti-gun uproar after Sandy Hook they chose to release a demo reel like this that includes about 60 seconds of game footage, and only 5 seconds of it doesn't involve gun violence. Maybe the reel was made long ago. Shrug. The most interesting part of the footage was the non-gun portion. To me anyway.

Give me Oculus or give me death.

Don't know why so many are comparing the two since one can be appreciated by anyone in the room and the other...not so much. Oculus is for a super-niche within the 3D/VR geek circle. I want a final retail model of that, too, but it is not comparable to this.

Hmm. Honestly once you mentioned it...now I notice that.

I also felt like the things(snow, driving) that kind of stuff. Wow. 1st person shooting I would have to be sold on.

I will repeat it again. Bring me a sports title with the Football Arena around me...lordy.
