Sony : Vice President for Japan hints at possible PS4 announcement in May/June

I'll raise the ante and say that the next PlayStation's premium model will be $699.99 for BC and a game along with cable and a headset.

The normal model will retail for $400-$500 unless they aggressively lower the price to $350-$400. Going under $400 is hard for me to see based on the rumored specs and since the next PlayStation should have the power of a high end PC which usually retails for over $500 on video card alone.

Comparing to PC prices is never a good idea, there are layers of licensing and distibution channels to go through before hey hit the retail shelves and everyone makes their profits along the chain.

The 360 had a top of the line CPU and GPU when it launched in 05 and PC part prices were evenn higher then compared to now iirc. It's just not a good gauge.

Oh my.

Chill out dude, everything is gonna be fine. People have said much crazier things than you. My advice would be to say more with less words. People tend to ignore really long posts.

You just gotta not give a fuck
Holy hell. That video is hilarious.

Hmm so thats how it works. Well good to know for the future. Still don't think it will be the low price point some people think it will be in the end.

Xbox managed fine even at $400 so PS4 at that price would do fine unless the economy gets terrible or Sony screws up badly.

Classic Derrick, how cute. :)

I just know something bad is going to happen. We're surrounded by non gaming stuff in these things and as amazing as we all expect the power in these things to be it's going to jack the budgets up even more. It's hard to be anything more than kind of excited because I know it's all going to come at a big cost.

Oh yes... 699.99 plus online fee~ or you can get it for the low price of 199.99 with a 49 dollar a month contract just like a cell phone! small text* 49.99 a month fee does not include online pass, online peer to peer or ad free services.*

I wouldn't mind if the console was 599 again, it will just mean by the time there's a price cut, there will be more games and they will be on a more powerful console compared to a 399 launch console.

But I get your negativity, especially considering this gen created players who ONLY play COD and no other game except sport games, which created developers who were scared to take risks. But there are plenty of gems to keep me positive that next gen will be just fine.

I actually wasn't even thinking of the console price. I expect that to be at $400 and Sony to try and subsidize the cost somehow. They can't afford another $600 fiasco no matter how powerful it is.

But the game budgets rising and there being even less risk taking than this gen...I don't know how we're going to get through a generation even worse than this. Less risk taking doesn't just mean sequels either, it means safer and dumber games.

SKU 2) $599 comes with a controller, VR helmet like Oculus Rift but better, and Sony first-party exclusive built with the VR helmet in mind.

If they doen't come up with something like that (including MS), I'll stick to my recent PC gaming switch and sit tight until I can get an OR.

I still think come this E3, there are going to be a lot of people in straight up shock and throwing a huge fit. I still stand very strongly by the prediction I made in my post in the recent E3 predictions thread:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=46066434&postcount=316

I really feel if you're in Sony's current spot and things are so bad you're having to sell off one of your buildings, a PS4 is the LAST thing they should be worried about. I honestly feel they cannot afford even the slightest chance of another Vita scale...I won't say failure but massive disappointment. I think a PS4 right now would be very foolish and probably sink them even faster than they're already sinking.

Here's the deal: Come either a May announcement or at the Sony Press Conference day for E3, IF I end up being colosally wrong and they DO announce and unveil a PS4, I will gladly admit I was wrong, and peacefully ask a Mod to close out my Gaf account. No argument, no alternate account shenanigans..just an honest straight up exit from Gaf. That's how strongly I'm standing by the predictions I made in the other thread. MS will do a set top box a la Apple TV with a heavy focus on multimedia initiatives, and I think Sony's plans probably changed significantly since the start of whatever they were planning in early 2011..to put it somewhat sensibly I guess. I feel I will be vindicated on one prediction or both. I have a few guesses what their announcement could be and I'll leave it at that. I am disappointed that it seems like I haven't fit in here as well as I'd hoped I might, so to give that deal to the community is fair. I DO have lots of knowledge about the industry, it would just be nice if I and others too could express our opinions without getting our butts ripped apart. Anyway, that's the deal. I honor my promises and if I'm wrong on this one I'll honor my word and exit Gaf.

You think it's related to the "one company getting out of the console business" that was said a while back by that onlive employee?

But we have rumors of the console's specs and insider information about PS4. Not to mention the gaming section is an important part of the company. I think you're wrong. Sony is losing money but they still have cash to spend. Alot don't seem to know businesses work.

I share some of your pessimism. Unfortunately, disappointment is inevitable for me. The chances of satisfaction are hovering around 1%. I just know Sony is going to bundle an eyetoy2 with each console instead of a VR helmet. Hahaha, I sound like the biggest baby.

Their gaming division has been profitable for a couple years now.

Ah I see, well only time will tell I guess. If it does turn out bad, well like I said there will always be a few gems to make up for it, at least for me. So I'm still excited.

That was the exact article that got me to think that way honestly. I just thought that article plus Sony's problems meant it was referring to them.p

I am definitely going to work on saying more with less words as one poster suggested, and providing substantial evidence for any claims I do make. It's something I'll work hard on this year,

I love Sony as much as the next guy, but I sincerely hope that the price doesn't approach $599.99.

(1) I don't want Sony to lose a shitload of money;
(2) 599.99 is a lot to ask.

It doesn't need to toast my bagels for me, just give me a decent-powered rig that can play next-gen Final Fantasy and such.

$399.99 would be ideal. $499.99 is my absolute maximum upper limit for a launch PS4.

Launch - December 2013 (Japan) - February 2014(US) - March 22014(Europe)

Putting my money on it. There is no backwards compatibility "upgrade" for $499 version. Also, not fair to release to Europe 20,000 years later.

Nope

November or Bust!

Enough of this Japan gets it first bullshit, that market doesn't really give a fuck, its 3DS & PSP MH land over there

Also February is a horrible fucking time to release it

The Vita was released in February in NA, and we know how that was a roaring success amirite?

You release during the Holiday season in NA and EU, get that shit out right near COD MW4 A New Hope

Get Black Friday and Christmas to get you through the lulls that are January (this when most items not wanted are returned), February (when has February ever been a hot month to launch shit), and March which is mostly the end of year fiscal stuff for corporations

I can see the $399 and $499 options but rather than have BC, I see for of the Vita"esque" First Edition Bundle that gives you extra goodies for that $100 extra price tag, what I have no clue, but it can be possible

Release this Shit in November, don't fucking gamble in with useless history tradition of segmenting and delay releasing your products by months
It's almost a Dinosaur approach nowadays

November 12, 2013, what a great day to release it

If they make a version without BC they might as well not release it since I don't see that selling.

It won't have BC if it's too expensive to do so, and by-and-large consumers will not care.

They need to reveal the machine pre-E3, and hope Mirosoft doesn't beat them to the punch by holding a similar event before Sony organize their own. Microsoft has tremendously deep pockets and is favored in North Ameria by mainstream media and gaming outlets alike, now that they've succeeded in solidifying their mindshare.
Waiting till June to take off the lid would be unwise, imo.

Yeah they should launch it worldwide on the same day/week, but this is Sony we're talking about here. They haven't exactly been doing the most rational things recently

I'm sure consumers would be perfectly happy not having access to their downloaded games on PS4...

The $399 will have access to downloaded psn/ps1/ps2 games. $499 model will have access to them as well as downloaded and retail PS3 games

Hopefully $500 for the more expensive model and they take a moderate loss on it. I am more than happy to wait for the price to go down as I play my PS3 games. I want it to be very powerful. This may be a console that really does last for an entire decade.

Would not mind a premium model with full BC myself, and they can even have a separate attachment accessory for those who want BC on the basic model ($99.99 accessory).

Who said anything about anyone being "happy" about it? Unless the Cell and RSX are included there won't be BC; and if it's too costly they won't be included.

PS3 BC will not be a deal-breaker for consumers.

A $500 price-point will be. Even a $400 price is pushing it.

The last thing I want is $599USD just because they wanted BC in the system. I own 4 PS3s. I'm happy with the way it is and don't want any sort of BC ever... Ever.

It'll be awesome if they have a pre E3 reveal in May and then go all out at E3.

I think this will be their strategy. I believe whoever opens the floodgates first and "WOW!"s people right off the bat will have more attention during E3 since they "officially" kicked off showing the first "next-gen" console.

Man I can't wait for next-gen to start.

Can't fuggin wait.

Sony will really hurt themselves right at the start of the gate pulling that shit off

PS3 BC won't be a deal breaker for most people, but I'm sure not having access to their downloaded games and content will be. That's why I put the 2 different price points - $399 model for most people, it plays PS4 games and they can access their downloaded content. $499 model for enthusiasts who also want to play their PS3 games

So glad about this. Sonys first party efforts are really unmatched and with rising game development costs third party support will be dead even. Gen vi and ps4....oh man.
