Eurogamer/CVG Rumor: Sony to have new controller for PS4; CVG: PS4 unveiling in weeks

Pretty much. The DualShock is an iconic design for a reason. Why mess with it? Because of the Wii U gamepad?

Sometimes people don't know what they want until they see it. Why not mess with it? As long as it's been thoughtfully designed and tested, not crammed in as a stop-gap.

I posted this on other thread, but it also deserves to be here:

Heart rate and blood pressure are fine, but I'm way more interested in biosensors that can detect how strong are you holding controller [they have a patent for that]. If the game can detect that, then it can really lead to new gameplay scenarios [dismantling the bomb by veeeeery gently holding the controller, opening a heavy lock with tight grip on a controller, etc].

Sounds practical and cool. But "why not use a button for that" is going to be the counter, and has been for a good while now, heh.
EDIT: or this case, gently using the analog sticks

Unless you play racing games or first person/third person shooters.

It just so happens that first and third person shooters are by far the most popular games in America at the moment.

So in short... Sony needs to make adjustments to appeal to the American market.

I said it was a compromise controller. They could make it work better for those things, but then it would no longer be a compromise controller.

Also, the premise that Sony is losing revenue on a measurable scale because Americans aren't buying their console because of a perceived controller issue with certain types of games is somewhat preposterous.

Sony creating a Wii U GamePad of their own would be pretty awesome. The usefulness an additional screen is pretty obvious and the way the Wii U GamePad does it is effective.

I can understand the appeal to the American market comment. More specifically, probably meant appeal to the Xbox market. Which is biggest in the USA.

So no more drinking while playing for me :(

Now when you are playing GTA6 a cop can pull you over for drinking in real life.

For some reason I doubt they tested a wiiU like pad, by that I mean not as big as that. I don't think Sony is looking at an LCD controller being a key functionality of the PS4 like it is for the WiiU, so the screen wouldn't need to be as big.

Who knows though. Who knows if it's even there any more. I'm cautious but hey if they put as much thought into it as claimed, I'm interested to see whatever it is.

As long as it looks like a dualshock and none of that xbox button/stick nonsense I'm cool.

How about something like this?

The biometric stuff is probably just skin conductivity(sweaty palms ) sensor. One of the same factors used in polygraphs.

Agreed. I love the additional screen on the Wii U controller, I mean in general the controller is pretty comfortable too, I never had any fatigue throughout my ZombiU playthrough.

Finally.

I hate the stupid design legacy and untouchable icon crap. Throw it away and start over with an emphasis on ergonomics. Follow the example of gaming mice. Create an ergonomic shape with the hand in a rest position then put the buttons there. Genius!

I'm going to be very disappointed when this controller just ends up looking like a bigger Dual Shock -_-

There are more than two design possibilities in the world. I hope we don't end up stuck in the past forever just because some people are loud in their dismissal of change.

I'll be loud in the other direction. Both controllers suck and have only stayed around because 'core gamers' are set in their ways in the same way 'casuals' are in theirs.

You think Touch & Motion Controls are gimmicks but they are more natural then pressing a button that do preset inputs.

absolutely not. Cellphone esque touchscreens lack both tactile feedback and precision compared to traditional button controls. this isn't as much of an issue if you're playing directly on a tablet and state at the controls and screen at the same time, but it's a dealbreaker for consoles

If they movie from the DS3 I want something so ridiculously sleek, classy and sexy I have to literally take a shower before I pick it up.

Doesn't feel that way.

I think Gabe Newell's comments are relevant here: They're neither pointless gimmicks nor an indisputable step forward, just a step to the side. Touch and motion can be a lot more intuitive for someone who isn't accustomed to "traditional" input methods, and they can have distinct advantage like moving a cursor with an IR pointer or manipulating an object in 2D with multitouch. They also have different limitations, such as limited precision and latency for motion controls, and a lack of feedback from a touch screen. How well they work depends too heavily on the game and the implementation for sweeping statements about either being good or bad to have much meaning.

I really hope they don't go the way of the vita and just try to cram as much technology on the controller as possible.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I've been using the DS for 15 years.....don't fuck it up Sony its iconic
Change is good, but familiarity with something that long can make it a problem

But with an 7" 1080 HD OLED screen, hell yeah and 10+ hours battery !!!

That asumes that people forwent the PS3 in favor of a 360 because of the controller. First out the gate, initial price, patriotism, friends' preference, developer support all make sense. Have you ever met anyone who bought a 360 over a PS3 for the sole reason (or even real factor) of the controller design? I certainly haven't.

I haven't heard shit about the controller rumor, but have heard several rumblings about a reveal "soon."
Can "soon" be in the next couple of hours?

I'm excited about the reveal being so close. I'm honestly more interested in how the console and controller looks than in the specifications.

I always wondered what this would have felt like. Other than looking silly I bet it wasn't uncomfortable.

I really want to see the back side of it, but I agree completely. The ergonomics are a little unconventional, but it accommodates hands of all sizes. They could probably shorten the handles a little bit and still have it be plenty roomy.

NOOOOOOOO!!

FUCK SHIT FUCK ASS SHIT FUCK FUCK FUCK TITS COCK MOTHERFUCKERS NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

That being said, I hope the controller is good. I don't want some boomerang garbage, I don't care what anyone says about it.

I want the DS3 with some changes. I DON'T want

-xbox 360 placement of sticks
-tighter sticks
-different shape

Just give me the DS3 with better triggers and maybe longer handles. If it still looks like the DS3 just with bolted shit ontop of it, then I guess I'll live with it. This biometric shit though sounds like gimmicky garbage, ie sixaxis.

Yes.

There is one person in the Madden league who won't get a PS3 due to the controller.

I am okay with this as long as they don't get too crazy with it. Build off of what works, I can't imagine playing action games without the DualShock, also worked surprisingly well with fighters.

This!

I love the dual shock 3. I would only change the R2-L2 triggers. Otherwise, it's a great controller.

But i wish the next Playstation has a gamepad like the Wii U. That touch screen is just perfect.

The Wii U controller is my favorite controller now.

I don't get how anyone can enjoy the dualshock thumb placements.
I dominate with the 360 controller and I dominate with the PS3 controller. It literally makes no difference to me. The placements aren't....anything. They're just there. They're fine. There's tons of gamepads that have symmetrical analogs. I'm blown away by people who think it's a problem. Even numerous PC gamepads utilize the same design. The only thing about the DS3 I dislike analog wise is that it could definitely be grippier. The material or the shape or whatever.

Biometrics sounds even gimmickier than sixaxis. What are you going to do with that that actually makes for compelling mechanics beyond novelty?
