CliffyB on Saint’s Row: “Lose the gimps and dildos” to beat GTA

Yeah, I have. I was fine with the whole thing until he ran to Twitter to talk shit about Gaf.
There were a lot of comments in this thread that were flat-out unworthy of anything but scorn. If you are so concerned with GAF's tribal honor why are you posting such erudite commentary as:
Mr. Enigma said:
Darn. However will Gaf continue without a pretentious douche who whines on Twitter when the majority don't kiss his ass about an opinion?

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
Not a jab at Cliff, but maybe Volition should make a chainsaw gun with dildos for blades for SR4.

I also have to say, I did find it ridiculous/offensive that there was a slider for "Sex Appeal" that adjusted a character's breasts. Not just due to the sexist nature of it, but because I find smaller breasts sexier than several types of larger breasts.

That was a joke, fairly sure. The common stereotype of giving something "sex appeal" is by adding boobies everywhere.

They could ditch the dildos for all I care, but the mission with the gimp suit is one of the most hilarious parts of that game.

Cliffy says sex being taboo is the world we live in..perpetuates that taboo by whining about a dildo in a video game.

I dont think he was whining, he just said that it was immature. The same way Teenager movies about a guy trying to get laid are. And yet we still have them around. People like silly things, serious stuff is more for GTA.

There are lots of games I don't like that have huge followings- I would much rather the developers continue to identify the qualities the existing fans like than significantly change certain aspects of the game specifically to appeal to those like me who don't.

Of course you're right, the game shouldn't lose its personality and its aspects just to get other fans while losing the classic fans.

Just meant to say that it really is for some people "just the game with the dildo"

Poe's law

I don't see how he was "whining" rather than giving advice to ditch the dildo based on that taboo.

And talking about it in the first place is what perpetuates the taboo.

This is the second time (I think?) that he's offered his glorious development advice to "fix" a game. First one was Resident Evil, wasn't it?

Of course you're right, the game shouldn't lose its personality and its aspects just to get other fans while losing the classic fans.

Just meant to say that it really is for some people "just the game with the dildo"

And what's wrong with that? Nothing.

Not every piece of art is going to appeal to everyone. And adjusting your artistic vision to appeal to a broader demographic is the greatest artistic sin of all. You're lying to yourself and your vision that way.

But what if Louis CK would stop being immature and take a serious role? Oscar worthy. Time for him to grow up.

It's a shitty idea. What makes SR3 so fucking amazing were the moments of seriousness juxtaposed against the batshit insanity. To take away the insanity would be to nueter that game.

Volition, please carry on as you were. We need more of that, not more me too wannabe serious ass crime games.

I agree. Saints Row 3 felt too much like "le reddit" humor. Saints Row 2 mixed over the top humor and seriousness and it felt great.

Now now that's going too far! I felt that the humor in SR3 was amazing.

With that said though, I don't really care for the purple dildo either. So I agree somewhat with CliffyB to an extent. Don't have a problem with SR3 otherwise though, one of my favorite games of all time.

Also, holy shit at the graveyard. Ahahaha.

I agree, except that insanity doesn't have to be a 4' purple dildo you beat people with.

Maybe we should focus more on the fact that he said "dildo, gimps and purple suits"- that is, the broader point.

Sure. I can see that. But where to draw the line? Fart grenades ok? Crotch kicking?

Just let that team do what they want. The last thing they need are helpful ideas from thier peers who act like they know better.

Very true. Yes GTA sets the bar for the genre but trying to chase it could lead to disappointment and failure. GTA is GTA.

There is that to note, too. Saints Row has always been dumb, but Saints Row the Third is a different kind of dumb. Like the first two are just complete shock humor, whereas the Third is far more absurdist - which is far more interesting than the previous games, even though Saints Row 2 probably had a better game.

In SR3, the Saints have made it big and are celebrated for it. They have shops, drinks, endorements, etc. That's why everything is so outrageous compared to the 2nd one, imo. It's definitely a parody of that gangster lifestyle of violence, crime and sex that people have always been interested in. And you can tell just by playing that they had a good time making it.

Jesus Christ, this topic is a mess. Look Cliffy B if you are even still here which you probably are not considering some of these posts, I do agree that a dildo in a video game may get some people rattled up in video game sex and violence but here is the thing.

SR3 is obviously trying to find something to make it apart from GTA and they decided that insane over the top humor would work and in my own eyes it did. The color pallet was nice and colorful and vibrant (Something I love in VG's). It had memorable characters and crazy ways of using different kinds of vehicles maneuver around the city. the Dildo was just the tip of the frosting, it made me remember this game a lot more than most other games did and I am not saying having a dildo in each game is necessary, but they took the risk and went with it.

Anyway, I better get out of here before I get raped by the amounts of hatred towards you. Hope you have much more interesting color palates in your future games!

And talking about it in the first place is what perpetuates the taboo.
How?

He said that he personally thinks it's hilarious. However, he doesn't always have a play space autonomous from others who may not (for him, his wife) and that other gamers who would enjoy the game may have a similar situation. I don't see how that perpetuates the taboo so much as it simply recognizes that there is one.

I know that I wouldn't have played the game around family for these very reasons. It is what it is. It's a thing in our culture and what the games industry chooses to put in games is not going to change that. Recognizing this and advising developers to make sure their games are accessible/receivable as possible to all those who would want to freely enjoy them is not my idea of perpetuating a taboo.

does volition even want to beat gta

I'd guess that everyone that makes modern open world crime games would love to beat GTA. You're talking about a series that sales over 15m units an entry. With that said, I don't think that anyone can beat Rockstar at their own game. Which would be making a more serious take on the genre. Rockstar just has too much money and a marketing ability that's second to none for anyone to take them on directly.

I think SR probably came at GTA in the best way possible as far as topping it goes. Being completely crazy and over the top has allowed SR to stand out quite a bit. And i'm pretty sure that The Third is the best selling modern open world crime game that isn't named GTA. So, they're on the right track. It ended up selling close to 6m units. It'll be interesting to see what it can do if a company is able to put a greater marketing effort behind it.

These reasons are never a good justification to change something about a game.

I brought up the chainsaw killcams in GoW plenty of times in this thread myself. But the reason I did is because they're completely gratuitous and obscene, like much of the content in Saint's Row 3.

I wouldn't want to play Gears of War around my 5 year old nephew. If I had to choose, I have to tell you I'd rather he see the ridiculous-ass purple dildo than geysers of blood.

The difference is I'd never advocate for changing either of these things. It's up to the developers to identify a style and tone. I like the Lancer, and I like the ridiculous shit in Saint's Row 3, even though I never even used the goddamned Penetrator and it's a basically tiny part of the game being singled out to make an unnecessary point.

He didn't say his wife, by the way. I don't think he's married, but I have no idea. He said "your average guy."

There's a difference between thinking it would be nice to have something and having it as one of your goals, though. I'm sure that every developer would love to be able to swim in the huge vats of money they'd have access to if they made a game as successful as GTA, but I don't think that means that every developer wakes up in the morning and says "I will beat the Housers today" to themselves in the mirror.

1. This thread is an embarrassment. Chock full to the brim with ad hominem attacks and childish antics that do a pretty fucking swell job of convincing one that Saint's Row was indeed marketed to people with the maturity level of a 15 year old boy. I'd say given the state of this abomination why the hell shouldn't he go elsewhere to talk about it? I sure as shit wouldn't want to further engage with the people of this forum if the first reception I received coming here was stuff along the line of insinuating molestation by his father when he was a child.

2. Who gives a shit where he airs his grievances? Gaf is not the center of the universe, and he's free to talk about it where he wants to.

Look, South Park is great. I'm a fan. But those folks on The Big Bang Theory can get the laughs without resorting to shock comedy or naughty language. The ratings don't lie. I'm just trying to help.

The laugh track help a lot. The laugh track make us laugh, and we get out of it happy. And since we are happy, we go back to it.
Remove the laugh track and you wont laugh. At least not as much. Its a nice ploy they use to make people like the show more and make it look more funny.

South Park gets bigger laughs and resonates more deeply precisely because it is audacious. TBBT is an adequate but inoffensive and forgettable show. Obviously it pulls bigger numbers but when has there ever been a causal relationship between quality and viewership?

There is a place for dildos and gimps in SR so long as they are used as a comment on the perception of gaming culture in the general public. I think SR3 did a pretty good job but some of the crude stuff was just there for the sake of being crude. If they learn to refine that, and make the commentary more pointed, then I see no reason to not have dildos in SR4.

The games industry is weird.

Could you imagine a major action movie director like Michael Bay going on twitter and saying "Hey guys, the Crank films are great, but why can't they try to be more like The Departed and Training Day? Stop being so embarrassing!".

Err. Okay? Surely there's more than enough room for all these things to exist?

The best about South Park I think is the fact that it shows the world through kids eyes, who learn stuff on there own.
I will always remember the flag episode where Black people are offended that the flag is a bunch of white guys killing a black guy, and they make the kids have a debate on it.
The kids didnt know that the race of the guy being killed was important, and thought it was just a debate over killing people or not. Such a nice moral. Love those morals at the end of each episode.

The reason it's taboo is because people complain about it.

If people never complained about nudity, we'd still have group showers and bathrooms like the Romans.

The worst and best of GAF being put on full display.
Yep. Seems like it. I'm amazed that people care so much about one guy's opinion, who doesn't even have any creative control over the Saints Row series. Wowwwwwwwwwwww.
is it me, or is the 'blow me' comment a bannable offense?
It's you, especially as this whole thread seems to be GAF telling Cliffy B to blow THEM. So uh.......... yeah. No.
