VGLeaks: Durango GPU detailed

I just hope MS invests that money wisely in some top quality games that knock everyone socks off, because that way everyone wins.

Well they are the ones stating core. They do have core IP's and they do know that core peeps buy systems before most everyone else. We will see.
Amazing how we go from dev saying both consoles will be a wash in power to that performance gulf. lol

Well I am sure people want it. It makes sense to want a big gulf especially when you see such a difference in one of the parts that matter the GPU. Otherwise a logical person goes..."why the fuck do it then?" And despite what people would like to pretend, we don't know how similar or different they really are. Small changes to even similar systems can have a large benefit and then that simple base becomes a springboard for different prospects of development totally and that goes to either of them. At that point they can easily become dissimilar in regards to quick comparison. So Sony may have even more stuff in their box that really helps things along, or MS as well. But currently, from what is being bandied around, we keep getting quoted things that don't really WOW you when you look at them from the side.

so you wouldn't be able to quantify it? just making sure we are on the same page.

Nope because flops don't directly relate to some exact thing on screen it's a general purpose number for how many floating point ops it can do second how they are used is not fixed.

50% increase in flops is not what I would call minor

But that doesn't automatically translate into a 50% better looking game... the real-world difference will be less. No matter how either side spins it, there will be a very similar visual fidelity, and once people can play Battlefield 4 with 64 players on either console, the already subjective lines will blur more.

oh so the majority of shading operations aren't FMAs?

I am not talking about whether the games will be 'core' or 'casual.' I was merely stating that I hope the games they invest in will blow my socks off. We all know what happened to Too Human lol.

Judging by a job description last year - I can't remember exactly when - it contained that Microsoft has $300 million earmarked for new game projects, so I say the chances are quite high.

IRCC both work for Core publishing team.

Sorry dude. I wrote that weird. I was agreeing with you. I don't care whatsoever either way. I play games. So what comes out will get looked at regardless and if fun...will be BOUGHT :)

I said it in another thread, but these consoles have got to at least match what my smartphone can do already, else they're facing an uphill battle.
Good post, but on this point I humbly think you've got it exactly backwards. (Assuming that you are saying that consoles need to be good at the things that smartphones are good at, in order to be "worthwhile".) Smartphones are already here, obviously. Many people own them; and they seem to like them. Ditto for tablets, albeit those don't have quite the same market penetration, yet. And as a rule, people aren't clamoring for something that they already have. Much the same way that people aren't pining for a refrigerator that also includes a microwave (at the expense of refrigerator space). They've already got a microwave, and would prefer their refrigerator-dollars go towards keeping things cold.

"Matching" what my phone already does is close to useless. Because my phone has already got that covered. Being an awesome, modern game console is useful to me, because I don't have one of those anymore. (It got all old and stuff)

I couldn't care less if I can keep 12 browser tabs open while playing Halo. If I desperately need to look at something right in the middle of a game(!), I'll just pull out my phone, or my tablet, or use my "smart TV", or just change TV input so it displays my fricking PC! Does shoehorning this sort of mid-game browser functionality into my console add value? Sure, I suppose. But it's a pretty tiny increment, since I've already got several other ways to accomplish the same thing, many of them with dedicated screens, and none of them "reserve" resources away from the game I'm (supposedly) playing.

Hey, I'm all for letting my console do new things, and even not-so-new things, but I don't typically need it to do them while I'm playing a game. I'm happy to wait until I'm done playing, at which time those functions can use up all the RAM they want. (Some things, like internet music streaming, would be nice to have concurrent with gaming, but I'm not coming up with many other use cases.)

Okay, streaming actual game content (like a moving map) to my tablet or phone might be cool.

And now Durango eSRAM has half the bandwidth of the 360's EDRAM? Is eSRAM lower latency or something?

Yes. But from what I keep reading it also allows for far more flexibility than the original EDRAM and is pretty much exactly what the devs have clamored for.

superDaE tweeted back to somebody who complained about gaf's fanboyish attitude towards Orbis, and the perceived performance Delta with Durango. His answer : Durango info is old, which made Orbis look better. Dun-dun-dun!!!

We're back to Square one, folks!

Oh, I don't have a direct link to the tweet, but you can still read it on B3D : http://beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=62325&page=60

Wasn't he supposed to have given some info to Kotaku by now?

I think someone else posted that earlier when we brought up the MS guy talking on the podcast and indicating that at least the PDF was wrong and things had changed. That was last week. And his words were...unique to say the least. It was a couple pages back we posted the link and the time he said it.
I can't believe people didn't notice that in the orginal thread, but I guess everybody was just trying their best Kinect joke.

Everything flies by so its easy to miss for some reason.

Microsoft's problem right now is one of perception. If MS doesn't come out screaming at the Durango unveil and/or E3 shouting "Core, Core, Core!", I don't think the early midterm looks good for MS unless those new first party games show up fast.

The 360 could coast like it has due to still getting superior multiplats late in this gen, but if they come out with the lower power box it is an uphill climb which leaves them vulnerable to a hungry Sony.

It seems like a downgrade for Orbis in relation to the CPU although the RAM got an upgrade in return. Or hell maybe Sony was just playing it close to their chest.

Reminds me of this lol worthy comment that was posted on Beyond3D:

Sony greatly deceived 3rd parties this time around. Supposedly Ubisoft and Activision, as well as others were led to believe that the PS4 would be a low power A10 equivalent, that had access to 2GB of unified DDR3 ram.
Microsoft probably developed the Durango to exceed that.

I just think that this is not fair, even if Ubisoft and Activision were leaking information to MS, Sony should have been more honest. I expect the next Ubisoft and Activision titles to not use any additional PS4 processing power at all because of this. They were played hard.
The Durango suffers in the long term as a consequence of Sony's lies and deceit. It's just not fair.

That's the funniest thing I've seen since the Kazifications. What adds to its hilariousness, is that he doesn't seem to think it would have been unfair if MS had heard real confidential secrets about PS4, and been able to act accordingly.

Well here is the podcast link as well then:)

Slick from his post above is right that is the only split diagram that was out and considered a true leak at the time. The yukon.

Diagrams were correct but things have changed is what he indicates in both podcasts.
He backed up what I already was promised about a sooner than E3 announcement and he was very firm on that but he does basically sort of sliped up and seems to indicate 2 hardware platforms and quickly says "there will be more than 1 xbox..uhm hardware something...happening this year". Also could just be a mind fart as he races to not leak something.

1 hour 5 minutes in

Wolves I think you are right. Surface BESIDE a new system could really be something unique for them.

according to flops alone... This is the closest gen since PSX - N64

What an incredibly disingenuous statement, you know very well what the context here is, what is the point of this smartass retort?

edit: saw the superdae tweet.
I can only hope that he means durango is WAY better in it's latest iteration.

And once again fml at calling people who see these specs and perceive durango as being weaker 'fanboys'.

Maybe some are, but I and I'm sure most others aren't happy about xbox3 potentially being weaksauce (ps4 is already mediocre to the point of being dissapointing enough as is).

If I had my way both would be significtantly stronger than what's in these vgleaks specs, don't care which one is the strongest compared to the other, as long as they are both powerful.

I'd prefer (for the sake of argument don't latch onto the numbers it's to explain a standpoint) a 4 TF durango and a 2.5 TF ps4 (or a 4 TF durango and 2.5 TF ps4) over one of them or both of them being a 1.2 TF piece of crap.

Hasn't it already been said that even though the specs are old, things haven't changed?

Yep. Which was weird because the MS guy said one thing and he said another. But then again its all crap anyway.
Crap as in Crammed Repeatedly At Piehole.

Thats what I'm wondering. If the specs haven't changed, then it doesn't matter how old they are.

Unless MS gave devs public specs, but had a slightly more powerful chip should the need arise is the only thing I can see.

Vgleaks info is from feb last year I hear that means nothing should have changed unless they don't want to release soon.
