Just noticed this panel on the schedule for Animation on Display, a small San Francisco con coming up in a week and a half:

http://www.aodsf.com/events/e/skullgirls/
Skullgirls: The Making of a Competitive Fighting Game

The award-winning 2D fighting game Skullgirls started with the chance merger of tournament player Mike Z's pet project, a fighting game engine, with artist Alex Ahad's pet project, an illustrated game world, eventually launching in 2012 as a PSN & XBLA best-seller. Join the art, animation, and design brains behind Skullgirls as they discuss the uphill battle to creating a unique, lovingly-crafted competitive fighting game.
I was going to the con anyway, so I'll probably stop by and take a look.

The Japanese can now spend their Valentine's Day bodying people with their waifus.

I know having this in arcades would be ideal, but I wonder what kind of scene will develop with just the PSN release.

But, yeah, we're crowdfunding her! This won't be a typical crowdfunding thing, though: when she comes out she'll be free for a limited time for everyone, and after three months or so, her price will go up to $5. This is to add a "ticking clock" element to it and try to minimize possible freeloaders, and encourage people to pay $5 now if they were planning on doing it the "normal" way.

We're still finalizing the rewards, but I can say that we'll have PC codes w/ beta access for one of the tiers. I think people should be excited about, since it means they'll get to playtest characters in development and provide feedback, something that... really doesn't happen outside of Japan? Or even inside of Japan, unless you're Daigo or something.

And...

The first stretch goal is a male character.

Is this official...as in...New thread worthy news official ravi or are you still working out the details?

Either way I'm fucking hyped, it would be the first thing I'd actually crowdfund.

A new thread should probably wait until we get a link to whatever site they're using.

I doubt anyone not already following this thread will care without actually having a place to give money to.

Yeah, I don't think a new thread should be made until the campaign starts.

If this ends up anything like the Cryamore kickstarter, Skullgirls is going to end up half dudebros.

(Cryamore has Kinuko working on it)

Not too worried about the success of the KS.

One thing I am curious about- will the bonus characters be cross-platform- I am planning to double dip.

How do you mean "cross platform?"

Since they'll be free for a limited time, you'll be able to get it on any platforms you own for that time period.

The PC version will probably have a short exclusivity window, just as a by-product of the console submission process. We'll put it out on Steam immediately, and then begin the console submission process at the same time.

On the kickstarter/however you do it, I"m assuming that getting the character itself will be one of the perks you can get- I'm assuming you can get it for either platform.

(That's my rule for kickstarters, I view them as pre-orders)

They'll be free for 3 months or so, so there's no need to get a code. Everyone gets it if we meet the funding goal.

If you own the game on a platform, you'll be able to get it free for any and all platforms the first three months it's out. After that, it'll be $5. This is to discourage freeloaders and also provide some incentive to "pre-order" it by funding her now.

This is actually a lot cheaper for us (and you) than distributing codes, and will hopefully spur sales of the core game, too.

I feel like I'm missing something.

How does giving it away free to everyone, for three months, discourage freeloaders and encourage people to fund?

More importantly, is there a date for when the campaign will kick off?

It doesn't really, unless there are additional perks or incentives. Looking forward to the crowdfunding regardless, though.

Because it doesn't happen at all if we don't raise enough money, and if they don't fund it they may have to pay for it after we increase the price. We think it helps make it seem more like a pre-order than a donation campaign. And, to some extent, it's more about making sure that people that do contribute don't have to worry about freeloaders "profiting" on their largesse forever.

It's entirely possible that people could freeload in that three months, of course, but the narrow window limits the "damage." I also think we'll probably see a spike in sales of the core game right before the free period ends, too.

And we don't have a hard date set yet - still a fair amount of work that needs to be done on the campaign, like pricing out the incentives, making the video, etc.

3 months isn't a narrow window at all in my mind... like, a week, maybe? But 3 months is a really long time in games. I think almost everyone would've downloaded her for free by then, and anyone who was going to buy the base game to get a free DLC character would do so within a week or two.

I need an in-development color palette for everyone. Basically, they're nothing but the line art, no coloring, and I guess just the shading since that's dynamic. I would think that'd be easier than most things to do? I think it'd be a cool backer exclusive if you guys could swing it.

Though I'd love to see it regardless of it being an exclusive.

I can't wait for Squiggly. She seems pretty cool. About how long did it take the team to complete a full character on average?

-

Played a good Peacock today online with solo Filia, and damn that was hard. I need to use ringlet spike more to stop the constant runaway and projectile bombardment. Also, is Filia's j.HK unsafe on block? I do airdash > j.LK > j.HK sometimes, but I kept getting hit by Peacock's cr.LP afterwards. :(

Characters take us about 3 months to complete.

The first month is preproduction, model sheets, move concepts, etc. The last two months are for executing the character - animating, coloring, and implementing her.

We were a month into Squigly when we were all laid off, but expect finishing her to take about 10 weeks because we don't have an office and need to reconnect with all of our animation contractors, etc.

So apparently the donation drive's raffle for the stick was finally done. I sadly didn't win lol

I'm more interested in that voicemail though

I should've entered. I kept forgetting even though I donated like three separate times. :p

It's all good. There are like four guys we know of tops. Panzer, Big Band, that guy with the apron and Beowulf. They'd have to go out of their way on the reveals to even come close to tipping the scale.

Very very nice.

Hopefully we see more of these down the road.

I saw last night's show on Crosscounter and the bits about having barely any unused animations left over. Your artists are mindbendingly efficient at this.

The biggest challenge we have with the crowdfunding campaign is convincing people that the dollar amount is "worth it."

There are campaigns for whole games that are going to cost less than this one character. So the onus is on me to explain why it costs that much, but that doesn't mean people are going to be receptive.

It'd be hard to believe that you'd struggle after that great reveal at the drive. People went pretty nuts.

Do you know if there will be a Salty Cupcakes event tonight?

I certainly hope it's not a struggle, but you never know.

And while funding Squigly would be amazing, of course, I'd really like to be able to get at least one more character funded.

It's at Super Arcade tonight.

I hope it's not starting super late
Hmmm

Don't know what to say. I'd imagine that Salty Cupcakes was getting a little too big for Frootsii, but it was nice to have a venue where Skullgirls came first and we didn't have the world breathing down our necks. It's cool if this helps Super Arcade, of course.

Of course

I'm just curious about how the whole shebang will unfold when you start the drive/fundraiser and how much money will flow if we get to the point where a second character can begin the funding process. Gonna be real interesting to watch regardless of the outcome.

Wonder if the next character you have in mind is Umbrella or someone else.

"The first stretch goal is a male character."

I think it's worth noting in this situation that MikeZ specifically asked the stream a couple weeks back whether we'd prefer to see Umbrella or Big Band as a playable character at some point. Given that Squigly already had work done and she was already planned to be setup as the first character I would imagine that the question was geared towards "Who do we want as our second character."

The stream was pushing towards Big Band pretty unanimously.

Prepare yourselves.
How will the new character/s be integrated into the game? Will they come out with their own story mode/background?

That's a really good question actually, I'd imagine we'll hear more when the details of the crowd funding initiative are out and about.

Honestly these days I think Ringlet spike is a decidedly less useful against Peacock style zoning than it was before. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the only projectiles it goes under these days is HP (which is cancellable into other projectiles) and Bang Bang Bang (which I think better Peacocks have strayed away from since it leaves her vulnerable and has a lot of recovery compared to her now ridiculous cancellable Bomb tosses). Granted, it's a tool that you don't want to forget you have in the matchup but I think you'll find your best bet is to Jump/Super jump -> Airball LK (+Assist if applicable) -> Airdash to get above her zoning rather than to knock her out with ringlet.

I DEFINITELY have to test the jHK potentially being unsafe on block though, that would be pretty insane if she was at a disadvantage in that situation. It's probably unsafe if higher from the ground, if you can ensure that you're lower when you do it then it shouldn't be as much of an issue. If they continue to try to punish remember that Filia's Up-Do DP is amazing and cancellable into her air super in order to be made safe.

There will be such a tier.

Seriously looking forward to seeing the Kickstarter(?) up and running. My wallet is ready.

All this Skullgirls news inspired me to do some pixel art. Just thought some of you guys would appreciate it.

Awesome stuff!

Can actually announce the Japanese release date now: 2/14!

Haha, the timing is really perfect. Was it coincidence or have you guys been holding it back a week or two to land it that week in particular?

Wonderful. Who can resist a living saxophone in a trenchcoat?

I can't imagine what kind of moveset you'd have for the guy though. How does he walk and get around, what does he attack with? What's under that trenchcoat and Fedora?! As long as Jazz music plays during the course of his attacks I'll be satisfied though, I want ending a super with this guy to sound amazing.

SNK probably had their backs against the wall for a while thanks to KOFXII. They had to release the game in an extremely barebones state and come back a year later with KOFXIII which may have shut them down for good if it failed. I'm glad they pulled through, at least. Their character making process looks like a chore compared to LZG's efficiency, though. LZG just kept getting sidetracked by things that had nothing to do with their own development process and that really sucks.

I remember speculating about Umbrella possibly being water based. I just want to see someone push the H2O theme something fierce. I can't recall too many instances of waterbased characters making an impact even though we've seen Earth, magic, fire and lighting characters running amok. Don't even get me started on sword guys...

We need some bubbles, literal waves and sea foam smashing against our screens. Anyone else suddenly feeling the urge to go to da beach?

I want his stage/character theme to have a rise and power that would blow my socks and boots off simultaneously.

Gimme some of dat Sakimichi no Apollon bang, but with that Mahvel energy and I'll be super hyped.

And then there's that time where they actually went bankrupt, partly a side effect of the Aruze mismanagement, and after the mess was settled in court the founder had to readquire all the IPs and outsource some of the development of the yearly games to Korea (2001 and 2002, the Eolith years).

I'm pretty sure Umbrella's playstyle was already outlined here: http://skullgirls.com/2012/04/skullgals-coming-to-handheldgaming-systems-in-early-2013/
Even if it was an April Fools article, it at least sounds like those character concepts were faily clear at the time, regardless of implementation.
The whole thing about building up power while you're not attacking is something i rad Breakers Revenge does, and I've seen some good praise for that game, even if as a non-SNK NeoGeo game it's kinda obscure, but it's a nice concept, so I'm all for seeing more of it - even if a design like Umbrella's isn't quite up my alley.

On the topic of that Big Band guy (I'm more curious about Bepowulf, what with getting referenced in artwork in Double's ending), wouldn't that involve changing the way Ms. Fortune's throw looks just for him since he's so damn huge?...

The only water-based character I can think of is Sogetsu from SamSho- Bust Sogetsu in paticular had some specials that would be interesting in Skullgirls.

Those Korean KOFs were terrible, and you could tell they were OPing Kim and Choi on purpose.

I just tested it against everyone doing cr.LP with the "First Hit Only" and "As Reversal" settings for playback and she can block afterwards. I was probably just messing up a lot in those matches.

Hasbro just C&D'ed the Pony Fighter, and Lauren Faust made an offer to create OC's for a new original fighting game.

Why not offer the Skullgirls engine to that (wasn't that already offered by MikeZ at least in jest during the EVO drive) ? Could be a very interesting new IP.
