The price of beauty.

Are you really chugging through the game like that? I mean you're shots have been absolutely gorgeous so far, but damn...that's dedication.

I'll just slide these in between all the (fantastic) crysis shots...

Yeah 30 is the absolute minimum I'd be willing to let a SP game drop to

Jesus fucking Crysis...

I've been off the Internet for a few days and didn't even know this was coming out so soon.

Think I'd be able to run it decently with an i5 2500k @ 4.3ghz, 16 GB RAM, and a Radeon 5870 1GB?

How about if I upgraded to a Radeon 7970?

All running at 1920x1200 on a single monitor, by the way.

Also, for those of you who need to know...

I took the liberty of showing the difference between the CA on and off.

By default, my game says Chromatic Aborration is set to 1.5, but I decided to showcase it at three levels.

5 (Crazy, get out your 3d glasses)
1.5 (Default)
0 (Enthusiast preferred*)

I took another at 50, but it was getting rediculous...

lol, for the longest time, I played Half-life 2 like that, well more like 20fps, but still. Sometimes when I know that I'll get some time to look around after a fight, I'll lower to get around 30 fps and then go around, but mostly yeah...

This entire section was a better Aliens game than that abomination that GearBox put out.

Seriously, if you had access to the Typhoon gun at the stage, it would have been the perfect homage.

The stalker enemies are Crytek finally getting the aliens right in terms of having them be interesting tactical opponents. It's a shame they don't use them that often and resort to the less interesting solider types of the previous game.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't C3 completely moddable?
I'll be looking for some player-made campaigns and challenge levels in the future.

I just don't understand the objective behind chromatic aberration. Like, what were they trying to achieve with it??

It is originally a byproduct of the way lenses work. Most of these filters are all built around the concept of recreating the imperfections of cameras that make things look like a camera was used. DOF, CA, Color Grading for film stocks, Grain, Motion blur, its all rooted in a camera function. CA is an effect of lesser quality glass (and super prevalent with plastic lenses), but is almost always present. It makes things look "filmic".

I'm starting to think that only certain games should take this approach though. Unless the presentation is similar to a film (a la walking dead or uncharted), games should embrace what they do. While eyes have a wee bit of CA, its certainly not like that. So if you have an FPS, why not recreate the eye, not the camera. Unless its a camera FPS...

which i want

It looks kinda cool. I don't think it's anything more than that.

When used effectively, it's just another neat little graphical touch that you probably won't notice most of the time, but occasionally you will and think "oh neat".

I'd like the Occulus Rift to become popular and all of these effects will be unnecessary.

I like the effects to a point when viewed in 2d on a flat screen, but in VR or even 3d, you're eyes should take care of the rest.

Corn? Isn't the Liberty Dome a tropical environment?

True, but I'd still like some variety among the grass... Maybe bent/bendable grass, or variations in color in some patches... It looks a lot like Flower right now. It works for Flower because the game isn't trying to be real.

It looks 100x better than FC3 (and it runs better for me as well).

I agree. FC3 I can't max, and has some weird issue with pre-rendering frames and also I have to either play it stuttery or laggy. Also the art in FC doesn't compare IMO. Meh wait till you play, i guess.

Crysis 3 looks pretty underwhelming to me. I'm not sure what I expected - maybe the tech demos of tesselated frogs made me expect the game to look... bumpier I guess?

Also I should apologize to KKRT - the grass does look pretty awesome... in some screens. I think the combination of muddy post AA, that godawful chromatic aberration and not downsampling can make it look seriously ugly though.

And I don't know why developers insist on making us think we're a floating camera rather than a person in the game with this hamfisted use of chromatic aberration and dust filters.
