Kotaku Rumor: PS4 out in November, control with your phone/tablet, maybe $429/529

With Sony going 2 billion in the red with PS3. Yea it will correct itself with PS4.

A company going under or dropping out of a market is also a form of correction. SEGA going third party was a correction, for one (and it's now a profitable company).

Not that I think this will happen with SONY, from all those early rumors it looks like Kaz has got his shit together and the PS4 will be a sane, profitable product.

1) doubt it
2) if they launch in nov they probably wont be first to market

do you really think microsoft will be september? i just wonder what software will be ready in time. stuff like BF4 is def. hitting november.

This is very true and with the added inflation on top of that. I always found it funny when people posted that the Wii U was too pricey. Wait till tomorrow. lol

With inflation, if the PS3 launched today it would cost $689. Outrageous right?

Id love to see them offer a subsidized purchase option. They could bundle the console with their premium PS+ service and still offer a perceived value to the consumer.

i expect sept-oct, with oct being more likely. hasnt their been a persistent rumor all along that launch would be earlier then the typical nov time frame? also, seems next gen dev has bee going for quite some time, especially with ms studios. i think the software will be ready

Dude it's a multibillion dollar industry, not collecting Latvian silver coins from the 1700s.
The market is healthy and mature enough to correct and adjust itself, they don't need our charity...
Fine then. DON'T give them your charity. Go game on PCs.

I simply don't think it's fair for people to demonize Sony for daring to charge money for a service (which is a hell of a lot more than peer-to-peer online gaming these days) that their chief competitor makes hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue annually for offering pretty much the exact same thing. ESPECIALLY when they are suffering financially.

If free online made such a huge difference for consumers in North America and the United Kingdom, they would have flocked to PSN in droves and made PS3 the leading platform. Unfortunately... they did not.

Before you go all-out labelling me as some corporate apologist, I'm not on board with a lot of the other anti-consumer practices being lobbied about... such as excluding used games and removing access to a robust digital download catalog (I've easily spent several thousand dollars in digital purchases I would like to be able to access on NEWER systems going forward and not just legacy platforms).

But the HD console market in most of the world (except for mainland Europe; the console market in Japan is virtually non-existent so it has very little clout) has already given the paid online subscription model a thumbs up. Consumers pay for value and millions of Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers around the world (of which I am one and I don't even play games online OR watch Netflix) have made a statement that they feel the value is there.

Sony can't be faulted for wanting to drive revenue with similar service offerings and I have every confidence that they will specialize their services in such a way that they feel customers will gain even more value from a PSWorld subscription than an Xbox LIVE Gold subscription. Free games, live gaming session streaming and access to their back catalog via PSCloud will all serve to facilitate that and the ball will then be in Microsoft's court to match that functionality for Gold.

Thats what i believe too. Sony is going to do things differently with PS4. Sony needs to pull in profits, I believe they will sell their hardware at a profit this time around. XBL is making way too much money for Sony not to follow that paid structure. It would be dumb not to.

That is pretty crazy. lol

I wouldnt be surprise if this happens. Cell companies do it.

Expand Playstation Plus. Make it the center piece of unveiling the PS4 and what you'll get (BC possibly w/ PS1/2/3). Don't need to make multiplayer cost money.

Canadian dollar was terrible when PS3 launched, pretty sure I paid $699 if not $749.

I seriously doubt Sony will make any pricing announcements tomorrow. It gives Nintendo and especially MS too more time to react accordingly. I'm thinking GamesCOM in August would be a perfect time. Big event. Not too far from Fall. Won't give MS and Nintendo time to make any big changes to their strategies.

I don't think people are adverse to Sony charging money for certain features but when you have a feature in one console (Free online MP in PS3) being changed into its competitor (Potential paywall in PS4) then of course people are going to freak out.

Right now there is no proof that multiplayer will cost money. Hopefully there will only be some killer apps like the spectate mode etc behind a plus pay wall.

Fights would break out. No doubt about it.
I hope Dent's hypothesis on that is off-base. These platforms are far too similar and they would effectively cannibalize sales of one another.

Same-day release only happens if Microsoft has a pricing structure in place they feel can decimate Sony with.
Otherwise, these systems will give themselves a wide enough berth to avoid that eventuality.

There's no way Sony could have had the balls to charge for online this gen.
The quality just wasn't there yet for the vast majority of the generation.
Pretty much that. Sony couldn't match the LIVE online experience back in 2006. Charging money would have been ludicrous on top of the system's $499/$599 launch price and once that precedent was set in 2006 they had to honor it going forward.

However, NOW in 2013... they probably feel they can match (or even surpass) the Xbox LIVE Gold service experience. And there is no free online precedent established with PlayStation 4. They can charge whatever they feel the market will bear.

It is similar with how people kept predicting it would happen this generation with no evidence, same thing now for the next gen.

I just want everyone to be aware that Sony is very sensitive to any criticism leveraged. So if any outrageous price points are rumored, the negative feedback loop will eventually reach the people on top of the food chain. If you feel jilted, let it be heard.

Because that worked out so well with PS3's pricing, and the ongoing cries - for many months - calling for a Vita price drop? -_-

Oh I'm sure they'll hear you, but I don't know if I'd describe Sony as sensitive to criticism, especially on this matter.

Sony has always positioned itself as a high end consumer electronics company that provides the most technology. So, this console will be no different and they will not be afraid to come out as the highest price console. They seem to relish In it.

It really is quite sad.

Nothing in the box warrants such a price tag. But I guess the camera and the controller add up to more than expected.

$429 is a weird price point, you wonder if the difference between that and $450 is really meaningful at all. Sounds a lot like a direct conversion of the yen price. I'd either expect $399 or $450, not a weird in between number. And I don't expect anyone to react positively to any changes in PSN, would be very surprised to see that.

We're consumers, we have the thinking of consumers. We don't want to get features we used to not pay for suddenly be behind a paywall. Now as members of a forum that involves discussions, yes it makes sense as a business decision, but regardless, our consumerism is what comes first. Don't go blaming him or myself because we do not like the fact that Sony could potentially charge money for online gaming. Is it a smart business decision? Yes. Is it a choice many, including myself, don't like? Yes. Is it wrong to express that dislike? No, so you can't tell us we can't think that Sony can be faulted, they can be. They chose to purposely put online gaming behind a paywall.

Where does it say online gaming will cost money? Oh Gaf...lol.

Also 429 seems like a weird # to advertise...shit it basically comes off as $449....so why scare off most people for an extra $29? $399 looks much more attractive really. U never see an producted listed at $429.

Hell this might just be Sony leaking stuff on purpose to make themselves look good when you hear 399 and free online gaming.

Also for those who call the cheaper one a turd pack...i mean come on....the wifi Vita, compared to the 3G version , sure doesn't look like a "turd" pack now does it. Both ps4s will have wifi so its not like it will be similar to the PS3 launch skus.....probebly will be a larger HDD, free PSN game, PS+, & maybe wired headset for DS4 controller....for the $500 sku.

All these Kotaku rumours are just BS . Dont believe in these things . Dont know why the site just hates SONY for like eons and isnt banned at Gaf

No , there is no plans for releasing an SKU above 500$. Last i heard , there was gunning for 470$ and a lower sku with 420$ price tag. SONY most probably upped the RAM in the final machine

I have some very concrete info but cant afford to lose my job as all these are just insider infos . Like i said PS4 was showcased to big investors last week . One thing could be right though the Xperia connectivity . But please dont believe in these BS

Good night and i am sure all of you will be happy with PS4 unveiling including the haters :)

If that is the actual pricing, that is a mistake. Firmly puts the Wii-u at a distinct advantage and gives then the opportunity to recover. Sony needs to come in at 399 to pressure the wii-u. I believe the wii-u is going to start selling for $250~300 for std/deluxe so this pricing will put it $130 more than the wii-u... making this another wii vs ps3 situation again.

The stuff marketers dream of.

More power to you (and Sony) I guess.

All I can say is, to reiterate a point already made, is Jesus, any other industry would kill for that kind of consumer.

I guess this is just like with the Chevy/Ford diehards, but with video games instead. Viva Generation Y.

I've seen you say this in half a dozen threads. You want to PM a mod about what you think the RAM number is? Can you at least tell us whether it is still GDDR5?

If going online costs money, count me out. Are they trying to alienate people, assuming this ends up being true? I'll stick with the U, PS3, and 360 and won't move up for a LONG time.

WTF? A RAM difference between SKUs? Why would this even be a thing? No offense, but the way you posted sounds a bit too aggressive.

EDIT: Fail I mis-read what it said lol. But still, more RAM? Is Sony trying to future proof this thing for the longest time?

What makes you so sure the quality will be there this time then?

I'm not really taking a side, moreso explaining why they didn't do it in the past when people thought they would.

I think they could now. The quality is there, and I expect improvements in the next gen versus what we see on PS3 now. PS+ is big for them and will (hopefully) be a focus for them in the future. I think their online environment delivers enough value to charge for it.

Now if they put online MP behind a pay wall is also a different question. Tomorrow should be a fun one, no doubt
