Kotaku Rumor: PS4 out in November, control with your phone/tablet, maybe $429/529

Gamers aren't opposed to paying for a subscription service, they're opposed to getting poor value from it. XBL is horrible value whereas PS+ gets you playing lots of games tons of discounts. That being said, as a PS+ member from day 1, I still would boycott PS4 if they made online play PS+ only, because it would hurt the online communities of games with fewer people playing. A Netflix sub which is twice as expensive as XBL doesn't bother me, but XBL does, because it doesn't give you any content in exchange for your money.

Im gonna re post part of a response I made in another thread of my opinion with regards to some peoples worries regarding Sony charging for online ect:

When the article states ‘most things behind a paywall’ its relative to what the PS4 offers as a whole, not in comparison to PS3. I would bet money that online gaming, messaging, chat, non PS apps ect will all still be free. What will likely be charged for is any new service that is part of the network such as video uploading/sharing, instant streaming of games/demos, access to other new social services ect.

I understand its easy to get scared that Sony will go the way of Microsoft and decide to charge for everything but I really think that isn’t a concern, they know what an advantage this things can be when people decide to buy a console.

People just need to calm down, stop the hyperbole and use some ‘common’ sense before throwing a fit.

It will be awesome to see people justify purchases even though they were swearing "on principle" a few days earlier though. One of the great pleasures of console wars!

A whole gen of forum fans going on about the "free online" mantra forgotten in an instant would be the meltdown of meltdowns. . . but would Sony be that foolish?

Sketchy source, but:
Playstation World, the first info on the new service available at launch with the new PS4 console

Cloud-gaming in the first place!
He had already spoken in the news this mattica. Now we are transmitting you some news about PlayStation World, a new service available at launch with the new Playstation 4. This is what can be seen from some rumors from New York.

The new name was chosen because it encompass all the services known to date along with other new, and will be accessible from a variety of devices in addition to the Playstation 4 and earlier PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, including tablets, smartphones, web site via PC, Smart TV.

Here are the top features:

Free
- Online free as the current Playstation Network
- Voice chat between all PlayStation certified devices, ie consoles and smartphones

Payment (annual cost of about $ 89.)
- Playstation Plus (included with these services previously have) enhanced new proposals, users PS4
- Access to Gaikai for cloud-gaming with the option to play for free to list some of the titles in a month, while others pay
- Share photos and / or videos directly to YouTube
- More space for saved games in the cloud

It will be more awesome if you're just plain wrong.

Sounds interesting if true. Great that online play would still be free.

PlayStation Cloud as a separate service or one online sub for everything is a choice Sony has to make...keeping it simple like this has advantages, separating them would also have advantages (you could opt in to one or other at lower cost).

edit - actually, going by this Cloud would be available separately under another model also...but they sort of roll two into one with this, and it presumably works out cheaper

One thing that makes me doubt the rumour is the idea Sony would announce pricing around the service today. I can see them talking about new services but will they put prices on things?

Current PS+ + Gaikai ad other features is fine for that price. As long as online gaming remains free they have the advantage over MS.
$40 more for cloud gaming and uploading to YouTube? They're going to have to really sell me on Gaikai working well for me to jump on that.

I'm sure we won't hear any real details about the hardware and the OS, but man, I'm really hoping they continue to offer region free gaming. I would be supremely disappointed if they chose to lock down their physical media this time.

Free online play was expected, but free cross chat not. It's very good, Sony!

And if that Gaikai service enables access to stream PS3s library?

If they plan to charge $89 a year, multiplayer will be part of that. The other features without multiplayer doesnt justify that price tag.

The access to free games, discounts, early betas, cloud saves, automatic background downloading is already worth more than that.

I will laugh my ass off if the PS4 is 1) bundled w/ its own "kinect" 2) has a huge focus on being an "all in one entertainment box" 3) a Gold service and 4) anti-used games... all the things people were bashing the Durango for lolol Oh sweet irony!

PS+ totally justifies the $50 price tag. If they increase the amount of games and features, it'll justify the $89 tag as well. However I think this is not a very good system. PS+ should be $59 at most in order to not be more expensive than XBL, as in the current state we already get more games than we can play.

If Sony charges $90 to play online and Microsoft only charges $50 then Sony is dead in the water. The majority of gamers don't care about cloud saving or most of that other stuff. They just want to play online.

Should have enabled the video uploading to Youtube as part of the free service (since it's not costing Sony anything), but otherwise seems fair enough. I'm sure streaming is very expensive for infrastructure.

That 89$ a year sounds pretty sketchy imo but I do expect PS+ or Playstation World or whatever they decide to name the service will have a price increase but I don't see it being more then 10$ or 20$ increase.

if there is any truth to that my prefered way of doing it would be them having plus at $50, ps world basic at $50 (aka no plus) and then the full package that includes both at $90.
I really like plus, but I will likely drop it when my sub is up if i have to start paying $90 for it as most other features sony could include with a playstation world sub I wouldn't want.

Well so far the rumor is $89 and not $50 so thats what I based my post on.

Exactly and not having multiplayer part of that is just insane.

I don't think you'll find out all of this tomorrow, but I'd put money on the ps4 coming with a camera. If you want to call a camera a"kinect" device fair enough, I just cannot see an electronics device being sold in 2013/14 without the ability to videochat out of the box. Here in South Korea I've seen set-top boxes with cameras, and gesture control!!

Then they shouldn't be charging that much. Any of the people who just get online to play COD aren't paying $90 to do it when they could go to the 720 and pay $50 maximum. Those people will just go buy 720.

I think they'll focus on everything but the used games bit. If that's a "feature", I definitely expect the lead to be buried on that. Everything else seems like it's fair game for unveiling tonight.

well so far the rumor says: $89 for PS+ and online MP free, so......
The previous rumour was that basic online features would still be free while others behind a paywall.
So anything is pointing to MP being locked like XBL at all. And if Gaikai streaming is worth, i can see them rising the price. Maybe there will be 2 levels of subscription, basic psn+ like it is now and an emhanced one with all the bells & whistles.

1) if it doesn't have impact on price , as it seems way cheaper than kinect, it won't be a real issue
2) ps3 was already a it does everything box, so ps4 is going to be the same, only better
3) As long as gold service is like psn+, i do not see where the problem is at all
4) we will have to wait and see

It depends on what you are offering these COD players. This is one group of people that has no problems spending money on things that adds to their experience of the game. Showing off to other players whats more important to them.

Im thinking the same thing with 2 levels of subs. I still believe that MP online wont be free like XBL.

I don't believe so. Charging for online play and giving away a healthy amount of free games each and every month along with possibly some downloadable content as well as the additional features is a very good value proposition in the face of a $50/$60 Xbox Live that only offers some of the above features.

Cloud gaming especially. To offer any subscriber access to their entire cross generation back catalogue. Incredible value.

Now that I've thought about it, I actually don't mind the price as much as I initially did, but it all depends on how Sony leverage cloud gaming and Plus on PS4.

Spiking the Plus cost (unless they let people buy in for multiple years early at the current rate) won't drive the revenue that Xbox LIVE does.
If anything, they may actually lose people that enjoy Plus on PS3 and Vita if it's going to cost them $89/annually to maintain it under the new PSWorld branding.
This also implies a limited BC-compatible library through this pay window instead of having access to everything that's presently digitally available.

PlaySation 4 Logo Leaked Ahead of Announcement?
A source, who we choose not to name for the sake of anonymity, has handed Aussie-Gamer a logo that they claim is for the so called “PlayStation 4″, which is apparently to be announced later today.

The design is stylish and modern and uses classic PlayStation colours to transform the iconic four button symbols into the words “Play”. Four lines, which appear to resemble battery recharge indicators, resemble the “4″, being Sony’s fourth video game console.

We have no way to confirm or rule out the validity of this image and the source in question was not known to Aussie-Gamer prior to getting in touch with us with the file.

The source did say, however, that the image is from an official press gallery which is due to be released following today’s big announcement, which kicks off at 10am Sydney time. Many are speculating that the company will indeed announce the “PlayStation 4″ at the event.
What do you think of the logo?

The 89$ might be the all-in-one package. I'd be surprised if they removed Plus as it is now. Maybe 49$ for Plus as usual, 49$ for Cloud Gaming with Gaikai or 89$ for both.
