The Wii U in a worse or better shape after the PS4 reveal?

JRPGs? PS4 has Final Fantasy, Wii U has X, what else is there even announced as far as JRPGs go?

Ps4 has an announcement of a Final Fantasy, nothing more.
When they show an actual game we can/will talk.

Also Korn or whatsisname made me thought of W101 for some reasons...

For the average Gaf reader Wii U was unlikely to be their main console. This is even more the case after last night I'd say.

I apologize but I'm going to call bullshit in this statement. Until Wii Nintendo was always the most powerful console. This is just a defense Nintendo fans came up with to justify their purchase.

I call bs on this. Were you around for all the shit the SNES got for slowdown? The N64 for carts? The Gamecube?

There is nothing in WiiU that comes remotely close to what was shown on PS4. There is a huge difference leap between the two.

I won't argue with you. I'll just say that the "huge difference" may exist, but things are already so pretty that it doesn't matter anymore, not in the way it once did.

Games are pretty enough right now that the average bloke is not going to give much of a shit.

Some guy in another thread said you could take screenshots of these PS4 games, and mix in pictures of the best looking current gen games, and average people on the street would have a very hard time telling the difference. I agree with that sentiment. These games look better. I can see it, but I am not sure if they look different enough to justify shelling out 400 bucks for a brand new system. That's the problem.

It has to wow enough to get people to shell out big dollars. Otherwise it will just come down to who has the best games. Even with that, considering Nintendo's likely 3rd party problem, Sony and MS probably have the advantage.

the only entity that affects nintendo's chances is nintendo themselves.
seriously, when was the last time a 3rd party decided the fate of a nintendo console?
now if nintendo don't bring it with their 1st party software, then they will need to start worrying.

bottom line is this: at the end of the day ALL the major consoles will feature quality games that will make owning them worth it.

that's how it's always been, and very likely how it will continue to be. there is no 'doomed' system.

I just didn't see it in terms of IQ or mechanics. The most impressive thing IMO was infrastructure that supposedly isn't substantial to the core gaming experience.

It's only in a worse place to people who refused to read the writing on the wall before. Some of those people are still refusing to read said writing though.

But a serious lol @ anyone claiming that a huge graphical leap over the Wii U was not demonstrated.

The graphics didn't impress me from what I saw, but I'm not a technophile.

That said, Nintendo is worse off after the PS4 reveal because another day went by that they still haven't released a first party game on the Wii U that's going to sell the system.

The only thing that still makes me think about buying a wii u is monster hunter.

I've never been pro Sony, but in my opinion, what we saw yesterday, was simply awesome.

It's in the same position as it was before the press conference. Lack of games, core and casual players not convinced of the gamepad, terrible marketing and branding, consumers not seeing value for money...

Nintendo have their own problems but the ps4 doesn't really come into it. They still have a long time before the next consoles to carve out their own unique space in the console ecosystem.

The problem as I see it is not that playstation will come along and dominate, (Although they might) but that nintendo simply aren't being proactive enough in their approach. Sony are getting people talking, building hype, nintendo aren't doing nearly enough.

Nintendos problems are entirely self inflicted. It is their fault that their console is being overshadowed.

Sort but I honestly feel Nintendo is fucked. More important than graphics one of main tenets of the Wii was miiverse. What PS4 is offering OBLITERATES it.

Nintendo stalwarts will still buy for tried and tested franchises but good luck convincing anyone else.

The same, pretty much. Which is not a good position to be in, but at least it's no worse.

There's a lot of unanswered questions about the PS4, and many of them won't actually be adequately answered until a year or so after the system is out. What we've seen is positive, but it's also clear it's trying to do something very different to the Wii U. We're not quite talking an apples and oranges comparison, but we are talking a granny smith and golden delicious comparison. Or something.

Nintendo's online infrastructure and hardware capabilities are so outdated and misconstrued they risk losing third parties permanently over this coming generation. Sony has the right idea by focusing on a stable developer friendly platform.

I lost a lot of interest in the Wii U myself. One of the cooler features of the Wii U is off-screen play. (And I seem to share this sentiment with a lot of GAFers). However Sony talked about streaming every PS4 game straight to your PSVita. This to me is much more exciting. I can have great visuals and high end games, along with off-screen play. (I may even be able to play my PS4 games outside of the house over Wifi.)

And everyone has a Vita, right? :) Do you think a lot of people will actually buy a Vita to use it as a gamepad?

I mean... better by way of Watch Dogs confirmation?

I wasn't all that impressed by the showing, and I'm not sure a wide array of media and fans were either (vocal defenders here notwithstanding), but Nintendo's going to decide it's own fate with it's own line-up.

well they certainly murdered off-screen-play for the Wii U :p

Until Sony gets Nintendo franchises, Nintendo has nothing to worry about. I don't think Killzone guy is going to replace Mario as an iconic video game franchise any time soon.

No difference really.

Nintendo has a machine powerful enough to make their core franchises shine and attract attention....it just depends if they are willing to spend the money on dev costs to do so.

They can give the next 3D Mario an Uncharted sized budget.. or a New Super Mario Bros U sized budget.

They can include stuff to make people take notice of the next Mario Kart/Smash Bros games like a visual overhaul, NFC functionality, full track /Map editors, quality online and high quality DLC...or they can just upres last gens games.

To me, Nintendo games are Nintendo games. But to average Joe Gamer who's going to check out some demo at a brick and mortar store, PS4 is really going to make the Wii U look unimpressive.

Lets not pretend like shiny more lifelike graphics don't affect the purchase of the average consumer. They might not care about ram speed and tflops but when they see ps4 or xbox 720 call of duty next to wii u call of duty they will decide.

Nowadays if you want to be wowed by graphics you need to get a PC.

I haven't been wowed by a PC game since 2007 TBH.

The process is so incremental that I'm more impressed by architecture or scenery, and that's happened at least as much on the consoles as the PC.

i don't believe that harms Nintendo. At all. Just a straight up me to gimmick.

if you've been reading WiiU threads its the one feature many gaffers base their game purchases, "does it have off screen play?"

And i mean this announcement takes that novelty away from the Wii U.

If you're willing to spend $200 on a dead handheld.

its not dead and definitely not anymore, a new lease of life! :D

PS4: Next gen graphics, last gen gameplay
Wii U: Last gen graphics, next gen gameplay

I know a number of games coming out on Wii U that I'm looking forward to, starting in a fortnight for about 4 months in a row.

PS4 has nothing that interesting to me right now. Amazing that they're launching a console and the first big teaser is a Killzone sequel. What world am I living in?

much, much better.

if you think the opinion on the PS4 announcement wasn't mixed- you're crazy. it's like be saying the Nintendo E3 Nintendo Land fiasco wasn't mixed. Sony blew their load, news stories don't know what to report - even most of the positive ones aren't raving. tweets are even more mixed with half being excited and the other half being completely disappointed. this is not a good place for them to be in with 8-9 months left to release. the negatives will always overwhelm positive opinions when discussed socially. they've put themselves in the exact same position Nintendo put themselves in with the Wii U.

You pick the ugliest game possible. Everybody was making fun of wall-guy. I was here, and I remember.

I also remember Oblivion, and other launch window 360 games looking fucking amazing, blowing the last gen out of the water.

This is a slightly different situation. Diminishing returns. For real this time.

Also PDZ ended up looking much better then that particular shot. Not to say that it was a great game or anything, but even those joke shots did not turn out to be true. Anyone remember Box/Crate Guy from the PS3?

Remote play isn't even a new feature and the Vita doesn't have the hardware to take advantage of Wii U style remote play.

Remote play on PS4 is most likely going to be exactly like Smart Glass - a feature that exists merely to muddy the waters.

except they also said any Ios/Android device too...

So...Smart Glass. Who cares?

Laggy, implemented in few games, built on standard internet/wireless tech instead of a custom solution and no hardware standardization. Sounds like a winner!

it is in the sense that you can go Remote Play at anytime if the promise delivers. The current system in Vita/PSP is a laggy limited to only certain games -type of a feature.

Seriously. Find me anything on WiiU that comes anywhere close to this.

If anything I feel the route Nintendo took starts to make more sense.

So the outlook certainly looks better after PS4's reveal, IMHO.

And to the people talking about the graphics (always the graphics...) PS2 completely destroyed the competition even though the competition often had significantly better looking ports offerings... So, yeah... Nintendo will probably do fine all things considered.

The Vita is existing hardware and we already know it doesn't include the sort of wireless tech that makes the Wii U streaming more than a novelty. And not many game developers are going to spend significant effort to make their game work well streaming to a handheld that nobody owns.

I can see the Wii U taking off well in Japan, since most devs there probably aren't going to be willing to take full advantage of next gen, as they haven't with this gen. Hard/impossible to say though. All I know is that I will end up with both a PS4 and a Wii U and some point, and I will love them both.

And to expand on that idea a bit more: do you think that Wii U, if it moves some units, could become a safe heaven for devs who don't want to "beef up" to develop for this new gen? Or have the more efficient tools and development streamlining I've heard talk of on these next gen consoles mostly taken care of that?

Na, it's not in a worse position.

Honestly, anyone expecting the PS4 to have NOT been a jump was deluded. We knew it was coming, why would it suddenly change things when all that was revealed was stuff that already leaked and thus was known.

The PS4 graphics are good, and obviously a step up, but while it has more RAM, what it can do with more RAM decreases as the RAM increases.

We will be seeing "downports". The Wii U STILL provides a unique way of play that developers do actually love and are trying to fully utilise.

Come the end of the year, the Wii U will likely shine. If it doesn't, then Nintendo has a problem
