LTTP: Spec Ops: The Line (I am Sick) [SPOILERS]

If Alice in Chain's "Rooster" comes on at just the right moment (much like all the other music has been happening) I'm going to bust a huge nut.

I knew this game was going to be special as soon as I heard Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner" at the title screen.

I know it's a pricey affair to get licensed music tracks for game production, but holy hell does it make a difference when developers do it right (Alan Wake and GTA for the most part...)

edit: Actually Mafia II did a reasonably good job with it too.

2K certainly didn't give them a CoD, BF, or MoH budget. That's for sure.

That for sure. But I doubt that the developers originally even had in mind to create a regular shooter. It's way too well done.
Saying that they just came up with that idea as an afterthought, because their budget was too low to compete with CoD is quite insulting. It's like saying Team Silent wanted to create a Resident Evil clone and just because of their budget, they created SH1+2+3.

The only thing that really got on my nerves was Unreal Engine 3. Several important scenes faded in and only after that some textures started loading. That ruined them a bit for me. On the other side, most of the rest of the game doesn't look like Unreal Engine (that's meant to be a compliment).

I think you're reading it wrong, the Extra Credits guys are way too nice to dismiss the creativity of the people at Yager like that.

Basically the point is that a CoD-like franchise sans the appropriate budget turned into an opportunity to deconstruct the genre, which they intelligently took.

It's the same as indies being less risk-adverse than mainstream developers because they have less money.

Still processing everything..

Why didn't I hear Alice in Chains' "Rooster"?! When was it even used?

I forgot when, but I'm pretty sure the DJ plays it at one point.

Hush I can definitely remember.

I can remember when all of the tracks played, but I swear I didn't hear it. I would know as AiC are one of my favorite bands.

Im jumping right back in to make the other choices so I'll keep my ears open again.

I played the demo on PS3 last night. I think I'm going to get this game. I wrote it off but it seems like a good cover shooter.

So I just finished...

I chose
to shoot myself

Was my first ending as well (
Konrad shot me, I couldn't and didn't want to do anything after that huge mindfuck
).

And you can
actually even shoot your own reflection in the mirror instead of being shot by Konrad

I now beat the game 3 times, getting me the platinum. I really appreciate it even more now. It's so well done. Did anyone notice that (ending spoiler)
Walker actually points the gun at himself in the last few frames when Konrad shoots him
? All those tiny details. Most developers wouldn't have cared about that.

And I just found this podcast with an interview with the lead writer (attention: spoilers).
http://www.gamespot.com/features/ga...dition-spoilercast-spec-ops-the-line-6386587/ Maybe it's already linked somewhere.

he says that
Walker is supposed to be dead right after the helicopter crash in the intro.
You can even
see him on some billboards and if you turn 180° right at the start of the first chapter, you see the red sand storm
.

It's fascinating that it seems that it's not common to
identify the civilians in the trench
the first time - at least most of the focus testers didn't figure it out. For me it was pretty obvious as well. But it seems they actually had a choice in there before and had to take it out
you would have been able to get down there and then get shot up
.

I would really love to get the soundtrack, but it seems they don't sell it (yet?). Also the making-of videos on youtube are quite interesting.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAA1GdjK5Es
and others.

Does anyone own the official guide? Is there some artwork in that guide? would really love to get an art book or something like that, but it seems nothing is available.

I was immensely impressed by Spec Ops. Sleeper hit of the year, I reckon.
Anyone know what Yager have planned for next-gen?

Yager was in the slideshow on the PS4 presentation.

Well, their next project seems to be f2p, which probably means it's multiplayer heavy.

Technically they could be making a singleplayer f2p game though, but those are pretty rare.

MONETIZATION EXPERT (f/m)
YAGER is currently seeking a talented and experienced Monetization Expert to join our pre-production team of yet unannounced title. The Monetization Expert will be responsible for creating and tuning our gameplay systems to maximize opportunities for thoughtful monetization. We want to offer our customers opportunities to personalize their game experience through micro-transactions without affecting game-balance or segregating our player base. We’re looking for people who love the idea of working together in interdisciplinary teams within a flat hierarchy and a fast-paced and professional environment.

Responsibilities

Design, implement and balance certain gameplay features that support monetization from initial design to final polish
Develop monetization strategy and oversee day-to-day revenue management
Collaborate with the team to ensure the implementation of features into actual gameplay
Iterate, balance and tune reward systems based on feedback from team, QA and play testing during the whole production
Stay a up to date on competing games, focusing on new monetization strategies
Work closely with Creative Director and product owners towards the game vision

Qualifications

In-depth knowledge of cross platform games and micro-transaction based business models and desire to innovate and define new methods
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; excellent ability to judge details vs. the big picture
Good understanding of the competitive landscape
Good understanding of full game development cycle
Superb written and oral communication skills (English)
Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams in flat hierarchy
Ability to deliver under deadlines and time constraints

SENIOR GAME SYSTEMS DESIGNER (f/m)

Desired Skills

Previous experience with Unreal
Experience with free to play title development
Experience with Scrum and Kanban production methods
Source: http://www.yager.de/career/job_offers/gamed_sys_senior.html

To feed into the opportunity cost discussion, this might be a good example of that. Yager may very much be interested in making a singleplayer only game, but no publisher might be interested in signing it, so here they are.

Man my mind is so full of fuck right now it's not even funny. I'm replaying and I'm up to Chapter 4, but now I have even more questions..like when exactly does Walker go insane or has he always been? Are Adams and Lugo even really there? Did Walker really have an assignment to go after Konrad? And what the hell was up with that bearded guy who gets offed by that Army CIA kid? Who was he? It's crazy how much more I'm paying attention to every minute detail now. This is easily one of the best gaming experiences I've had in quite awhile.

Argggh so many questions.

1) ~Chapter 9.
2) Yes.
3) Yes.
4) I have no idea what you're talking about.

But the best part of this game is that none of those answers are definitive. Everyone can have their own interpretation.

My mistake. I meant the CIA agent that is holding that 33rd captive. The 33rd ends up taking his gun and turning it on him. The 33rd soldier acts so shady afterwards before he rappels off.

I think that's the worst part of the entire game. It's handled incredibly poorly.

I really wish Yager would do another single player game after this. While I like F2P a lot, I just want more crazy stories from them.

Hey Antitrop, why do you suggest playing on Easy? I got through it on Normal with no issues and I'm doing my re-run on Normal as well. Probably going to do a Hard run soon too.

(Whoo, glad this thread showed up, I was hesitatnt to make one myself :p)
Got this because of a GAF thread recently, currently on Chapter 6. I'm so confused but it's so wonderful, and I haven't even scratched the surface yet.

Reading some of these posts, though, oh god I am in for one hell of a ride :O

If anyone knows where I can find cuts from the original soundtrack (not the licensed songs) I'd really appreciate it. What seemed like original music like in Chapters 1 and 10, was really, really good stuff. It was like hazy 90's grunge with a bit of a southern twang to it. Amazing the difference it can make in a TPS when you've got such an engrossing soundtrack at your side.

And I have still yet to hear Alice in Chains' "Rooster"

I would say to play it on easy because the draw of the game really isn't the combat. It's actually pretty decent, but I don't think adding to the difficulty adds anything to the game. Guys just kill you quicker and take more bullets to die. The things that are interesting about this game have nothing to do with the mechanics of combat.

What really surprised me with Spec Ops apart from the story/how it plays out is how much I really enjoyed the actual combat. I kept reading how 'ah it's pretty medicore' 'you wont play it for the combat' etc and on that front I thought it was very satisfying, especially the shotguns. The little slow mo action that occurs when you get a headshot is very satisfying and along with how aggressive the AI can be at coming for you I generally had a very good time with it as a shooter.

Agreed. I enjoyed the combat quite a bit and I thought the shotgun was phenomenally fun.

I don't feel like the game was polished enough to deal with the frustration of playing it on anything but the easiest difficulty. Specifically with regards to the cover mechanic. The lower difficulty allows you to kill people in 1-2 shots, which is more realistic and fits the atmosphere of the game.

If you're playing for the story.

Here's the most notable original track from the end of the game:

I agree completely, even though it lacks a bit of polish or any real nuance to the mechanics of shooting a gun, it nails the feel. It feels "good" to kill people in this game. And it's obvious how that plays into the context of the narrative. Playing on Easy allows you to kill enemies in 1-2 shots, making the weapons feel very powerful. The slo-mo effect on a headshot is incredibly satisfying.

And I have still yet to hear Alice in Chains' "Rooster"

I believe it's only listed in the soundtrack due to its inclusion in the 2010 E3 trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxu7W8xR5jo
I can't remember any instances of it actually being used in the game, but I could be wrong.

You are still a good person.

:p

I realised when typing what I did I played straight into their hands, make the game fun to play and then smack you over the head with the events of the game. At times I thought it was maybe a 'bit' too heavy handed but overall I admire the game very much for what it tried to do/achieve.

Yeah it can feel a bit rough at times but the whole game is rough and ready and a bit dirty so it didn't bother me too much. As well as having a lot of the gunfights in what are really some very beautiful locations, the artstyle/colours is really very very nice. Dubai has this really great sense of place, a mysteriousness to it which for some silly reason reminded me of Prince Of Persia - Sands Of Time. Along with the way you are constantly or seemingly constantly going downwards it actually kept me moving forward to see where I would end up locationwise just as much as wanting to see the next part of the story itself.

How about the music that plays near the very end, when
you're at the penthouse of the Burj Khalifa and you're slowly walking through Conrad's apartment
? I loved it.

I just realized that the main writer on this game (Walt Williams) is an employee of 2K and not Yager. I'm still really excited for Yager's next project but I feel like it might lose some of its narrative oomph due to having a different writing team. I wonder what Walt is working on next.

I just killed the civillians at The Gate. Goddamn... that mom and her child..... I had to stop playing for a minute. After that I shot down the man who stole water and they fucking killed him AND the soldier! The snipers then took me out immediately, so the next time I just shot the soldier. Man, I'm starting to feel a bit like Walker, myself.

I'm not entirely sure either of the writers are still at 2k :(

Hmm I thought Walt Williams was still with 2K. I could be wrong though.
