Sony considering Gold, Silver & Platinum memberships for PS4's online services

^ It must be a magical feature that operates at 0kps
It's a client/server connection that originates at the PS4 (your house), sending data to Ustream/Facebook/Youtube. Aside from any information gathering going on in the background it's of virtually no cost to the Sony infrastructure.

Uploading to youtube or streaming through ustream means it is not going onto a Sony server that they would pay to maintain. So indeed it could be 0kb traffic to Sony.

As long as what's on the PS3 now (online gaming, complete store access, media apps) is included with the free version, I'm ok with this.

This is exactly my position. Basic service such as MP gaming and apps like NetFlix, Amazon Instant, ect.. should be free as they are now.

The fact that they were free is one of the reasons I choose PS3 over Xbox this generation.

I'm not going to pay a monthly fee on top of my internet bill, and netflix bill for the ability to use those services on the PS4.

Fair enough. So it IS a magical new feature.

My point is that Sony clearly wants to get in on the benefits of having some sort of paywall in place. Whether some like it or not, it's been a huge success for MS. And they did it by locking something that people wanted behind a paywall. Right now Sony's answer to that is to give free games. But that's a pretty big move and it can't be cheap for them. That's why I think that they're going to add more to it. They'll make it more desirable and the Share feature would be one of those. Maybe they won't completely block it off. They might let you share photos and a 1 minute video (instead 15m), but I absolutely expect some part of that to be locked behind a paywall.

Streams carry advertising, and are advertising in and of themselves. If Sony's monetizing them it's more likely to be a deal with UStream/Youtube for ad revenue sharing IMO.

^ People uploading videos of glitches and playing games poorly does not equal great advertising.

^When that massive influx of videos happens, the amount of views on each these gaming videos will be spread out and might not make substantial advertising money for Sony if that's the case.

Infact, #PS4Spam might become a hashtag on Twitter.

You get so many ppl saying how awesome the insurmountable value PS+ has all the time after all. So I can see Sony taking that ball and running with it. Adding more "value" whilst increasing the cost with features like youtube uploading, voice chat etc.

Wasn't there a thread about increasing the cost of PS+ $40 more ($90).

It was referred to as PS World. I believe it was debunked though.

The simple way to not fuck this up is to only charge for additional features, not basic ones.

Online play is a basic feature, thus should be free.
Voice chat is a basic feature, thus should be free.

If either of these are not, they have made a mistake.
On top of this, they can charge for whatever they want feature wise, so long as it's not a feature we have now for free.

I believe the increase in prices could work something like this:

Free - multiplayer
Silver - voice chat/video chat/youtube/share button
Gold - Silver plus PS+
Platinum - Gold + Gaikai

They can charge for whatever they want feature wise, so long as it's not a feature we have now for free.

Indeed. Voice chat was free on Vita. However, they can always snowball a free feature with added value, thus validating a fee. For example voice chat would save the last 10 messages (or something, I dunno).

What's the possibility that the higher tiers could actually include monthly paid services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, or maybe Sonys music and movies unlimited?

Potentially, but I think that would damage them.

They seem to be incredibly conscious of the 'gamer' vote coming their way. They play it up alot as some kind of promise over other platforms, in quite an ammusing way.

Charging for either of those, even if they added value to them, would be against this ethos.
It would create bad will with the customers they are trying to attract. They really can't afford to do that in my opinion.

I hope I'm not wrong.

I'd imagine everything that is currently free on PSN on both PS3 and Vita will be free on PS4. All the new stuff will be sub based. That's the best way for Sony I think.

Make 'Silver' free then we're talking.

Basic/Free
PS+
PS++ Game Streaming

Although it might be in their best interest to just have Basic PSN and then an upgraded PS++ that costs a bit more than PS+ does now. Too many options can lead to confusion.

Keep online free and give us the option to upgrade for free stuff and extra services. Do NOT copy Microsoft's paywall bullshit.

That would be cool. They really, really better keep MP free. PS+ kicks ass so I have no problem paying for that (unless they jack the price way the hell up).

In the context of his interview, pretty obvious that Yoshida wasn't stating anything definitively but simply throwing out ideas (as he's one to do).

Stuff like live streaming and being able to take control of your friends game will probably be behind a pay wall, which I'd have no problem with. But I hope that simply uploading gameplay video will be free. Give the audience a little more and show them that they're missing out on even better features. Besides, this way everybody can get involved so their will be tons of content to view.

Voice chat should definitely be free. It's a very simple feature that needs to be universal because otherwise it fractures the userbase.

A Netflix type subscription package where you can download/play any game would be absolutely amazing. You would probably still have a delay after the game launches in order to encourage sales of the game, but this would open up another revenue stream for both Sony and publishers, and I don't think anyone would be against it.

What is with this netflix stuff? I don't know how you guys in america get content, but why is it so important? Isn't it just "TV"?

^ Game purchases are linked to the console AND your account... maybe you should run the license transfer tool if you're having trouble.

What the hell are you talking about?

You don't use Sony's network AT ALL do upload data to Facebook or Youtube or Ustream.

Second, what is with that transfer tool stuff you posted? I made reference to paying $60 on PS3 and $60 on 360 for the same game, but the 360 one not allowing you to play online unless you pay a subscription on top.

I for one am not interested in netflix-style [streaming] gaming sold as a subscription. the only way a program like that makes sense is if the company is giving you a discount in exchange for you agreeing to commit to a certain buy-in. and even still you get insurance pool issues. in movies and tv it works because dvd rental is protected by law. once we go digital for games, rental is dead (though you could argue it is being replaced by microtransactions)

Internet has grown substantially in five years. In another five where will it be?

Increased bandwidth scales linearly with usage so you will still get lag.

Especially teen Tommy wanting to play a fighting game living in the same household who now has his parents using netflix because it's mainstream, his brother torrenting porn and sister rinsing youtube on her phone. . . lag.

Unless you're recluse and don't share your connection with anyone or play at unsociable hours, lag will always be there and more devices will be accessing the net in the future, especially wirelessly.

According to that Sony Gaikai thread, you have the option to eliminate gaikai lag by downloading 1GB first, running all the processing locally and then the have the game "stream" (download *cough*) extra data as the user progresses through the game. That way no one can complain about the Gaikai service and lag if the actual streaming-gaming option isn't good for you.

Wait why would they make you subscribe to share features, that button is there already. Why would I have to pay to be able to use it? that would be really dumb on Sony's part.
Sharing features can be limited. Where is the streaming going to be hosted? Probably Sony servers, so that has a cost. Posting pictures on social networks or using external services like twitch.tv or youtube could be free, but using the PSN to stream games and interact with friends while at it is probably included in some kind of membership.

I really fear that they will make us pay for the multiplayer.

There is no clear statement on this subject. I find this strange and concerning.

The butthurt when/if online play is not free is going to be spectacular. It will be a Gaf meltdown of epic proportions.

Everyone that believes that Sony will keep online multiplayer free needs to get that out your heads. Online multiplayer is a major draw and keeping it free is leaving money on the table that Sony can't afford to lose. Yes, Sony said it would stay free, but that was for PS3 while trying to combat Xbox Live at launch.

And it might be the kind of thing that'd outright murder the Xbox if they screw it up badly enough. But they could incentive in other ways, IE free DLC or at least heavily discounted DLC, encouraging you to play online and pay into it more often.

But free online multiplayer or not, I just hope they don't get stupid and start demanding a subscription on top of subscription services like Xbox does. Add extra stuff for the subscriptions, that makes the service better, not holding my Netflix hostage.

Netflix lets you pay a monthly fee for unlimited streaming of a bunch of TV shows, movies, documentaries, ect. ect. It includes things on TV now and some new movies, but also a bunch of old TV shows and movies. I use it way more then I've ever watched cable.
