Gaming journalist is a biased hack, this is shocking!

He is negative about everything done by Microsoft and Nintendo. He is in favor of everything Sony had done. He made things up. He said things which are clearly wrong. He claimed to be objective.

sure... I want to buy him a beer... waving the flag high above our heads. BELIEVE.

I don't get the purpose of this thread? You could find plenty of quotes on journalists that look completely stupid when examined in retrospect

Often they are simply expressing a sentiment based on the moment, those sentiments can completely swing the other way based on different factors in the following years. I'm sure you could find many journalists looking like idiots for predicting sub-GameCube level sales for PS3. Or even similarly, those predicting doom for the Wii pre-launch.

Fanboys will be fanboys. Being so narrow minded as to restrict yourself to one company's product is silly. If you can afford it, it's worth investing in pretty much every platform each generation for exclusives.

Any journalist that discusses doom and gloom for a console that hasn't even been announced should be taken with a grain of salt.

I think it's good that people actually put some critical thought into the makings of these kinds of stories, and one of the first thing you do (even in scientific journal) is to declare whether or no you have any conflicting interests or biases.

It's good to see SOME people are investigating those who write and their biases. I'm really pleased with the OP

I don't think he is biased. He just tends to blow things out of proportion. I wish he wrote more, his writing style is insane.

Hey guys.

The 3DS time was over in September of 2011, apparently. I'm not sure if you heard.

Truth be told, the first time I read that header line, I took "gone supernova" to mean "has exploded massively". Made the following sections looks a bit confusing!

The crap of attacking the OP.

I was not attacking the OP, I was questioning the motive of the post ....... was the issue with a biased gaming "journo" or a gaming "journo" with Sony bias?

It's just that after the Rab Florence event and other shit over 30 years of gaming "journalism" bias and questionable practice is nothing new.

I don't trust any of them to be unbiased, I enjoy personalities like the Giantbomb crew but I do not listen to any of them when it comes to reviews or news.

awesome work, another "journalist" exposed :)

i just don't get how they could call themselves professional if they let their feelings affect their writing.

Why is that crap?

There are plenty of sites, of a more professional nature that have contributors that display shocking displays of bias in all sorts of directions.

Maybe I was harsh in so much as VGLeaks is big news at the moment but singling out one site for this effort can be taken as someone who does not agree with that bias / agenda settling a score.

It's only an issue if it's pro-Sony bias, I think.

Not this "other do it too" crap again. Its not a reason to shut your mouth up, its a reason to say something. If you have a problem with people getting called out, while others are not... you know what... than call them out!

I did not say to shut your mouth, good OP and well done.

But as a forum for discussion I wished to try and ascertain the motive behind your post as the things pointed out are not shocking or original in regards to the shit that gets put out by guys like Mr Garratt.

The crap of attacking the OP.

It would probably be pretty easy to make a similar post about the OP's pro Nintendo stance but he isn't a journalist and isn't paid to make gaf posts so while it is pretty shitty to call him out it also doesn't exclude which bias is being investigated and exposed.

Well, looking at his recent history I can't help but feel like he's biased too. I'm just saying that it would be easy to make this mistake with many journalists if you were actually trying.

ZombiU hands-on: the Dark Souls of zombie games
Wii U was always going to get unwarranted flack among gamers for being a casual console. VG247′s Dave Cook plays the punishing ZombiU to find out why they’re dead wrong.
If you’re still not convinced that ZombiU is a ‘hardcore’ game for ‘hardcore’ people, then you should at least check the game out through a friend’s purchase. To all Dark Souls fans, you absolutely need to play this game. It’s that simple.

That's not exactly negative, but is it a one-off? Trying to see if this guy is just wrong about things or genuinely a shill. For instance, he had an article about how Apple was going to be awesome without Jobs and how people shouldn't panic. A little while later, he explains how Apple is doomed because Jobs is gone.

You are undervaluing how stupid and terrible his writing actually is.

He's not just "another games journalist", this is a special case of someone going above and beyond the call of duty.

Eh, there's nothing wrong with speculation/opinion like that in a clearly labelled comment piece - especially if a writer is looking at it and basing their argument upon factual information and adding their slant to it.

When it seeps over into news articles or consists of completely made up events, then that's when you start questioning.

Well, the *original* issue was a post which, as Stump said, was "a really premature and hyperbolic editorial"; the issue wasn't known to be bias at the time, just an extremely selective and questionable reading of events, not what many people felt we should get from quality coverage of the industry.

GAF being GAF, I'm fairly sure that any such reading of a given set of events would cause some suspicion no matter *who* that reading would favour. While I don't think I've seen quite such a comprehensive bit of research for this sort of thing beforehand, there's certainly been many situations where people have questioned the way information is presented to us, and long may that healthy scepticism continue.

You're either exaggerating or overestimating games "journalism". Compared to other crap I've read he's fucking Mark Twain.

Oh yeah, I remember that crap he posted about Vita's UK launch sales. I emailed him to ask about the discrepancy between his comments and what PocketGamer was reporting, and he refused to provide any explanation.

Didn't realize at the time that this was part of what looks like a fairly blatant pattern of fanboy bias. No doubt he and Sam Bishop would get along swimmingly.

Really? I see examples of a "Sony bias" so sparse that they are half a decade apart, both around the launches of new platforms. As I said, retrospect can make many things look stupid. 3DS came out slow, was forced to slash prices and Sony were gaining some good momentum coming out of their E3 show. There was plenty of doom and gloom around 3DS that now looks premature.

Here's more:

New Super Mario Bros. 2 trailer brings the happy
After the break. You owe it to yourselves to own this game. It’s out in Japan on Saturday; the EU on August 17; Australia on August 18; and the US on August 19. It lets you walk on water, for God’s sake. Remember that 3DS XL ships in the EU on Saturday. You should buy one. Read our impressions here.

3DS XL: making Nintendo make sense again
3DS’s miniature form factor crippled Nintendo’s latest handheld, but XL, the machine’s first major revision, finally makes good on the excitement we all felt at E3 2010. Patrick Garratt tries it out and comes up grinning.
3DS XL deserves to do well when it releases later this month. With New Super Mario Bros. 2, Pokémon Conquest, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Heroes of Ruin and Freakyforms Deluxe joining Mario 3D Land and Zelda this summer, you should be seriously considering either getting involved or making the upgrade. On first impressions, I doubt you’ll regret it.

He just seems to sort of really like the things that he decides he likes.

So at best we're looking at a guy that's extremely erratic and shouldn't take anything he writes all that seriously.

I guess that was basically the goal the OP had in mind from the start, even if he wasn't 100% correct at trying to make him look like a Sony fanboy.

I'm talking about the overall quality of his writing.

The Sony bias is a completely separate issue.

All of these things seem in line with other press at the time.

1. After the ps2 everyone thought ps3 would destroy the Xbox and Sony made the specs sound amazing.
2. Up until a year ago (the price drop)everyone thought the 3ds was a failure
3. The vita had a lot of (sadly unfulfilled) promise

How hard did you look, Parappa? Took me like fifteen seconds to find an article he wrote three weeks ago about how a secret French source leaked info of a Vita monhun which will lift the angelic Vita to the height it deserves. Dude is tainted.

well, on more serious basis... what do we do now? Call our friends at Mossad to take care of him?

I have read probably 15 different stories about PS4... 1 was crazy - this one, 1 was from analyst that has showed some sense and optimistic, rest was mostly trying to find negative thing about it and written poorly. Pretty much every single one was factually wrong.

At least in this article everyone can see it is over the top.

idiotic fanboy posing as games journalist exposed as idiotic fanboy. doesn't matter what kind of fanboy he is, he's still a disgrace to his profession

Exactly, OP can you do this for others or is it only Sony bias that generates this effort?

Maybe by displaying his bias you have displayed your own.

Are these all of his articles or did you pick the ones that makes it look like he favors Sony? Because it would be pretty easy to cherry-pick and make journalists seem biased. Not saying that's for sure the case here, but it's worth giving some thought.

It's only an issue if it's pro-Sony bias, I think.

I consider almost all of the gaming "journo" scene as nothing more than PR regurgitation machines that try and lend credibility to marketing in the hidden guise of the professional enthusiast.

I have no need to have someone pointed out, I consider them all biased until proven otherwise.

I question your motives behind the delivery of this information in a healthy exercise in trying to detect and reject potential bias, I am not saying you are ...... just trying to find out.

There is so much fanboy crap around at the moment that it is worth trying to figure it out.
