Tomb Raider |OT| Lara's Misfortune

I don't see Uncharted as a TPS, its a 3rd Person Action Adventure & I hope the Action bit is whats been added to TR, because it shouldn't be a TPS, TPS & Tomb Raider together in one sentence is laughable considering the complete lack of in the series, and if it is? lol
lets just hope Raziel don't return as a TPS

Lara doing flippy cartwheels and shooting at a Tyrannosaurus Rex is laughable.

LOL no. RDR does not have the quality in mechanics of Vanquish.

That's what I meant by presentation. The story, VA, set pieces etc.

But you mentioned game of the generation and by default Rockstar San Diego created the best game out and that's Red Dead Redemption by miles <3

Yes, Max Payne 3 is up there for one of the best Third Person Shooters, but fuck the unskippable cut scenes.

If this game stuck with the same 17 year old Tomb Raider blueprint, everyone, even the True Fans, would be complaining about using the same fucking 17 year old blueprint.

So make changes to update the blueprint. Don't throw the whole thing out the window and grab a more trendy blueprint to use.

No one is asking for the same exact game, but longtime fans would like something that at least resembles the series we liked.

I just watchd a bit from Tomb Raider Legend and the second level starts with 15 minute shootout in a Paruvian village then the next level is a shoot out in a skyscraper in Japan. Tomb Raider Underworld had many extended shooting sequences (the second level was on a boat I think). You have to go back ten years or more before Tomb Raider is what you are describing.

For TPSs, I have Gears 3 at the top followed closely by Vanquish and RE6. Gears 3 probably the best weapon set in all of shooters and the co-op really cements the mechanics as the best in the genre.

I was playing through the police station level a couple days ago. So fucking good.

Hah, try playing the airport mission again and just wait for Tears to come up and then the following train set piece. Max doesn't give a fuck!

Gears gets forgotten easily when talking about TPS but it essentially reinvigorated the sub genre this generation so it gets major props for it.

100% correct. I think some here have blinders to what Anniversary and Underworld actually were like.

I mean, regardless, you're buying the game. If you cared that much about the classic feel, you'd wait a bit and see how it pans out.
I can except change MGS did it but retained its core gameplay
thats generally what I was asking, I'm more intrigued now as to what they have done, it seems positive from what you guys have said
I actually thought it would have arrived to day, guess it'll be monday then.

Well said.

Hell no.

Max payne (oldie) , binary domain, vanquish (least good of the bunch) and even SMNC (multiplayer) shit all over uncharted 2.

I seriously wonder what people's frame of reference is when they make claims like uncharted 2 best game ever...
probably something to do with graphics, gameplay wise it doesn't come close to Vanquish. Then again someone was saying Last of Us has more varied gameplay than Bayonetta.

I am sure the following sequel will have a lot of the open up areas for exploration and good old proper Tombs and puzzle game play by expanding the formula they have crafted well on this title reboot. You only have to think with next gen having a lot of resources such as bandwidth in memory and processing power to be able to easily craft much bigger open areas that the game design can be worked around on than be limited to today's console restraints. Lots of games have had to do tricks and things because of it the past few years, and it's one of the reasons why I am excited for the shift by the end of the year.

I wonder what the design curve will be. I mean, could we see a full-fledged sequel in two years time? With multiple hubs and such?

You didn't even like the old games!

Ceebs has a point though, I'll admit. They could have done that.

Would it have sold well though? I wonder.

Underworld sold like 2 million copies. Budget your game appropriately knowing that is your sales target.

yes that style of game is never going to sell 10 million copies, but I doubt this one will either and it probably cost 3X as much as Underworld (if I had to guess) to make.

Well it does sound like a good game. It sounds like a game I'd play even if Tomb Raider wasn't the title. I think what is bothering me more than anything is that a lot of this new stuff could have been added and they could have still kept the core of platforming and puzzling of the series in tact which it seems they didn't. I mean I will wait to play it for myself, but that is the impression I am getting from reading about it. Hell they could have marketed it the same way. Got all these newcomers and sales and still kept it a platformer at its core. Newcomers to the series might have ended up really digging the platforming focus too. Ahhh... I don't know. Just thinking while I wait to get my copy. Again, just the vibe I'm getting from impressions. I obviously want to play it to see what its like for myself before any big judgments are made.

His words can be used for the countless other franchises that have been ruined this gen though. Splinter Cell, Hitman, Elder Scrolls and so on.

Though I would have preferred another traditional TR game with modern controls and graphics as well.

Dude I backflipped like a muthafucker when that came at me lol, but what I mean is TR was more autolock on shooting, so its not a real TPS, hence laughable

That's no excuse to make the Tomb Raider elements worse.

I guess the point is for better or worse the changes were made. People who don't like the changes shouldn't buy the game, but plenty here are. If you buy the game and know going in what has been changed its on the person who bought the game, not the developer or anyone else.

I owned the origional Tomb Raider on the Saturn. I loved 1 and 2. I played all the others, I owned Anniversary (which was amazing), Legend, and Underworld. I loved the old series. I also love the Uncharted games.

I am not going into this expecting the same old stuff we had before. They tried releasing that type of game in Anniversary, Legend, and Underworld (though the last 2 were more action oriented) and the sales weren't there to continue making that type of game.

For the long time fans its either time to accept the fact the old style of the game is gone, accept that and go in with an open mind. For those who hate the Uncharted games I suggest walking away before you even play this game.

True. It kind of bums me out because most of its detractors like to focus on the campaign and the dumb characters, ignoring that the game underneath is pretty amazing. I don't think the single player does a good job of showing you just how many options you have when it comes to combat because the A.I. isn't anything special. The game really shines in
multiplayer. Fighting against people who know what they're doing brings out the tactical fiend in everybody.

The original game taught everyone how to do a good cover system. Without it, I doubt we get Uncharted and Mass Effect in their current forms. And even the bizarre games like Spec Ops The Line wouldn't exist.

I'm an expert

Formerly worldrevolution. The only reason I am nice to anyone else is to avoid being banned.
Fuck me..RDR is the most boring game of the generation that's for sure. Ick.

Pre-ordered the CE at Amazon, will be my first TR since PS1, so excited, partially because it resembles Uncharted a lot and the formula seems to work, its getting good reviews.

I did not like it very much either, but I have never really liked a Rockstar game anywhere near as much as everyone else seems to.

I played RDR and kept thinking how awesome this game would be if it were more of an open world RPG style game rather than a narrative focused shooter.

its autolock, I think people aren't seeing what we trying to say, the combat is fine
but Tomb Raider was kinda POP like in its own way, Uncharted has this too but not as much, Assassin Creed has it in its secret temples & trails

If you give in to apathy that's just a free pass for this trend to continue. Voting by not buying the game isn't good enough; If the people who don't care and are happy with the game get to say so, so do the people that aren't.

Nope. Fuck dissenting opinions. Let's just post Oprah gifs and drive by posts about how amazing this game is. That is what OTs are for.
