Rumor Roundup: Sony's 1080p 5-inch flagships for Q1 2013 - Yuga & Odin

most people don't see the Note as a replacement, and it's not even a consideration for some people. just like many Note II owners don't see the upcoming GS4 as a replacement.

Wouldn't really classify the Note 2 replacing the S3, completely different line of phones. Will give you the one x plus though, atleast there was a fairly substantial gap between the two models (one x announced in feb while the one x+ was announced in Ocotber)

I wouldn't say that Note 2 is a GS3 replacement either but I was trying to point out that a better version of a product comes out or is announced within 5/6 months. I have to say that announcing Z's succesor is very early, even though Sony haven't officially announced it. It's just an unfortunate leak.

so i'm not entirely sure if i should bother importing the ZL, or just wait for this new model that has the best of both worlds.

The retail units are out here so no beta software etc. I got over the viewing angles. Sure the colors don't pop as much as the butterfly or iphone5, but i think the screen looks great enough, especially so if you are coming from amoled Samsung screens. imho.

What stopped me from giving up my SGS2, is the noticeably sluggish OS navigation. It is dropping frame-rates when you swiped up or across or calling up the phone menu or launching Chrome. The quad procs/2GB doesnt really leave my SGS2 behind. I expect more from a 2013 top end phone. I was this close to ordering Z, i may wait for a while to see if Sony fixed this sluggishness or i could wait for the Q4 refresh with the slightly faster procs.

Not sure if the GPU is struggling with rendering 1080p pixels? I have restarted the phone, turn off all widgets, turn off stamina mode, force on GPU rendering, still dropping frames.

It is a weird strategy for sure.

It will be weird to have three flagship phones all covering the same ground on the market all at once, but that's where we're headed. I wasn't very clear when I said replaces, I actually meant replaces for marketing and promotional purposes. The Z/ZL will still be on the market.

Sony's strategy has been all over the place this year, but they are all talking about one flagship per year for 2014 so maybe this is just the final time that Sony will pursue such an idiotic strategy.
Good to hear about 2014. I kinda expected this sort of strategy last year, you know getting through the pipeline of SE, but not this year. I suppose, though, if this new phone will be simply marketed as Xperia Z plus it might be ok. What won't be ok is if there is yet another flagship phone that will have a completely different design etc for H2. Hopefully not.

I was going to pick one up to replace my Desire HD but since reading about how the JDI panels are better I may just hold off for a while and deal with my current phone for the time being.

I don't mind the different processors but since I will be using this phone for a few years, I want the best display that I can get.

Exact position I'm in. The desire HD is running a bit rough these days. Can't handle these new apps!

My phone carrier's web site tells me I'll be eligible for an upgrade on March 12th, I was thinking that since the Xperia Z is available here now I'd look into whether I can upgrade to one.

My current phone is an LG Optimus 2X which hasn't even officially gotten ICS yet (though there have been some leaks), but even with the leaked firmware there are still some issues with it so I'd really like something that performs better and has less bugs.

Buddy at work got it on the weekend. Had a little play with it this morning. Whats with the screen? It doesnt seem as sharp to me as the HTC or Samsung flagship phones. No pop in the colours!!

i think Sony need to up the ante on screen contrast & brightness. Xperia Z might be selling better than their previous mobiles but its certainly not selling massively. I think engineering wise, spec wise, design wise its an awesome mobile.. but these little quips are just not doing good for them.

i'm just saying that many people see them as different products entirely and wouldn't consider replacing one with the other, while with stuff like the Z/ZL and Zzz or One X and One X+, they are truly seen by all as a better version of the same thing.

Wait for the GS4 announcement first. Then decide.

The price hasn't been announced yet, $759 is Xperiablog's guess although it might not be too far away from the real price. I was personally hoping for around $550. It's great to see they have added the red color, that's just sexy. I think I would still get the white if the price is right.

Might as well have saved their money and resources and not even bothered with a US release. No carrier partner(s) and $760 US Dollars is dead in the water.
Well you guys are finally getting to pay the same price as us people in the Europe.

A friend of mine got the phone today. She's not big into technology at all, so I was surprised to the Xperia Z in her hands. The screen is amazing and she had people around just admiring the display. She said the battery isn't too good, I haven't asked if she was using the stamina mode or not. One big downside for me, personally, was that the design just isn't as striking for me as the T, S or Arc. It's just a slab, but I guess that's what people like these days.

759 dollars is considered expensive? That's the normal price for any high end smartphone in Europe. You guys are spoiled :p

It probably won't be $759. And yup, unlocked phones are expensive. They're usually cheaper in the US because we don't pay vat.

I've bought unlocked non contract phones before too and they were nowhere near $750. $550-$650 seemed the norm.

Just received the news that my Xperia Z is on its way from HK. My girlfriend's parents bought it for me, unlocked, 420euros. Pretty excited!

How the hell can the same product be that much cheaper in some places is beyond me. In europe I saw prices of 800euros. US? 750$. Internet? no luck finding something below 700euros...

I'll post some impressions as soon as I get it.

Expansys has them for 630.

It's to do with currency and considerations for each region, to be honest.

If you live in the US, the Xperia Z is about $620. Works well with ATT HSPA as well, I get about 8-10 down.

Yeah but what kind of considerations are they? People in the US and europe have more money? Less people->less sales->higher price to level the field?

Honestly, in this day and age to see such a difference in prices gives me the feeling I am being robbed. If it was 20+ years ago where things would come out 1 or 2 years later than japan, or some times just not be released here at all, I would understand it. But this happening today, it still doesn't make much sense to me.

I've had mine for around a week now and my impressions are as follows:

Pros:
The screen is lovely
Standby batter life is amazing when using stamina mode
Hardware design is excellent
Size is great for a 5" phone
Camera can sometimes be excellent
Skin is very light and very well done
Feels great in the hand

Cons:
Battery life without stamina mode is poor
Stamina mode is broken by apps like Google+ that want to run in the background all the time
Stamina mode breaks the notification LED
Camera is super aggressive with noise reduction to the point where it smears details
Dust and fingerprint magnet (black model), but then you can always just rinse it under the tap!

I'm still debating whether to keep it or not though, the two things being battery life when stamina mode isn't on (the mode is great but useless if you read above) and I have a personal peeve with the email client. I have server side rules on my work exchange account which sorts main into sub folders. Whilst you can set sub folders to be synced / pushed automatically, you won't get a notification for it. There is a modded APK which fixes this but I won't root until I can do it without unlocking the bootloader.

If you want to ask me specific questions or want photos of the device then just let me know.

Maybe by the end of the week I hope!

I know a lot of people have been complaining about the screen. It's my first real smartphone (I had an old blackberry but besides checking my emails, there wasn't anything smart about it) and I don't want to believe that the screen is such a huge problem. I mean, it might not be the best but does it really bring problems for anyone?

I would also like to hear something about the battery. Can any owner give me an estimate of the running time of it? Can it last a full day? On some reviews I read that it can go beyond a day. On others, barely 7h...

Edited:
Didn't read post above^Thanks!
