Twisted Metal |OT| Don't Eat. Don't Sleep. Play

Bought a PS3 for this game.

Played it like crazy for about 2 weeks, and then just stopped for some reason.

Now my PS3 is strictly a Netflix machine/bluray player. :\

Same here. I was seriously disappointed in the AI. But the multiplayer is good fun when it works.

A bit tangential, but I figured I'd share that a video just went up on Gametrailers featuring the Black Rock Stadium level from PlayStation All-Stars.

I'm always down to play, but it seems no one else is. The disc has been in my PS3 since release...

We need to try and team up again. I played a few games earlier today. Holy shit there are barely anyone playing the game. Pretty damn sad. Some guy tried to use Roadboats magnet to throw me off the level. Just shielded and flew away with Sweet Tooth. I noticed that people are finally figuring out the Roadboat+Megagun combo. Vehicle is still slow as hell so its easily to just run away.

Still pist off about the party/team/clan game bullshit. Guess we will have to play a Custom game to team up. At this point everyone probably unlocked everything or doesn't really care about stats.

Played a few games the last few days, Been getting into rooms no problem aswell! Now to get a few friends to start playing again :D

you know in this game's defense the PSN bunch is a little fickle. Its not like they really stick around for any game. As far as what happened I think Jaffe was much more an overseeing party rather than a day to day hands on. He mentioned one of the reasons he left was so he could be more local to his dev group and not having the distance issues that ESP had.

I think maybe the ESP people led Jaffe to believe things were going great until the beta when obviously the game was very broken. I say this because following Jaffe all this time I have to believe he would not have put up with that shit and I hope he comes back on the PS4 and gives Twisted a proper sequel. As far as Sony's interest and lack of support, they pretty much abandon everything don't they? Look at Starhawk, what did they release one map?

They do not know how to keep a game going.

Warhawk had tons of DLC over the course of a year though, and its DLC certainly kept that game alive. Gran Turismo 5, the Socom games, DC Universe, LittleBigPlanet, etc. All had tons of post-release content that kept players involved.

TM didn't have crazy-high numbers to warrant much DLC, plus I don't think ESP wanted to spend countless hours on new maps, considering how outrageous and complex your average TM map is, for DLC.

That's a shame. It's been a year since release and it's still got problems that were identified in the demo. God damn how can you release a game with massive issues like connection problems and not be able to fix it. Fuck it sucks because the game is awesome.

I actually had more trouble getting online with the full release than I did with the demo. And the sad thing is, the online was insanely fun....when it worked. And I'm not a big fan of online gaming, but that one is/was thoroughly enjoyable.

Just getting constant network errors on my end. Anything I can do other than just keep trying to join every room?

I had problems but fixed them by deleting the install and patch data then updating again. If you just installed the game then I'm unsure what it could be... try DMZ?

PS3 is already DMZ and I just downloaded it off the store and it was at 1.06 I think unless PS+ auto download the patches whilst I left.

I've had a few games since but I have to create a room and hope 5 others join.

It's just astounding how Sony could release a game like this. Honestly the only good part about it is the gameplay, everything else is like amateur work, the UI, networking etc.

Hopefully Sony doesn't give up on the franchise and we get a online only PSN title in the future by Santa Monica or someone that can make a working game.

Maybe we should set up some GAF meet-ups. I'm most likely rusty as all hell, but I'm always down for some matches.

Friday evenings work best for me.

I was tinkering around with my ports on my router and I've got like 70-80% chance of connecting to rooms now. I thought my PS3 was in DMZ since I assigned it through the router but I found a port called "Any" in my router and assigned that to my PS3's IP and it seems to have sorted most of my problems.

UPnP now also says it is active on the PS3 whereas before it was not available even though I had it on, on the router. Fun times ahead anyway since now I can actually play the game.

Not looking good from what I saw when just logging in tonight. Very few rooms and no automatically created rooms to be seen. Looks like the majority moved on. Hell even still has the same message from a year ago about having just released a new update to try and figure out the problems.

It actually made me very sad to see cause it's such a great goddamn game and they screwed it.

I wonder how the custom skin servers are. I'm going to be so goddamn sad if/when they shut down. I spent a lot of time on some of my skins, especially my Mr. Slam Road Boat

I was actually surprised that there are still a fair few rooms. In the 2-3 days I've had the game, it is averaging around 12-20 rooms. Seems like it has carved out a small community with people still playing a year after release. Since I sorted my ports out I've not had a problem getting into games, although Nuke is not very common but I don't mind since DM/TDM are so good.

It went on sale in the PS Store which is why I bought it. Was £10 in the UK store and I'm sure the US store got a discount to. In fact it still might be on sale, grab it whilst you can.

I really hope this game (as a franchise doesnt die) When news of the PS4 hit I tweeted Jaffe but he didn't respond. Even though Santa Monica is around, ESP is gone. I imagine Sony owns the engine though. With that engine they could hand it off to anyone.

I love Jaffe but has the game he left to make even come out yet? Really if we want a true franchise TM he might have to be out of it. It took them years to make TM PS3 and it launched all fucked up.

That said, I would still be on my knees for Jaffe to come back. I would think he learned a lot from his first mega online game.

Same here....but I'm afraid they might let it die. I have the same fear for the Wipeout series with the closing of Studio Liverpool.

The two franchise that got me to buy a PS3 in the first place. The 3rd game was The Last Guardian (LOLOLOLOLOLOL).

So... basically, I doubt I'll get a PS4.

As has been mentioned many times before I'm sure, the fundamental mistake they made with this iteration of the series is to basically mail the single player in and focus on multiplayer. I don't know about you guys, but playing the various stories has always been the big draw in TM for me (think of how great Black was in this regard), with multiplayer a distant second.

Yup.

If this gen has taught me anything, it is how MP focused games are so temporal.

They seldom last past the year they were released, whereas I can STILL go back and play TM2, just as it was meant to be enjoyed.

Oh dude I was all over that from the moment they announced that. What they had was good still but yea it just doesn't feel right not having a dedicated driver to each car. That's one thing that kind of saddens me about the direction David has wants to go if he does another which was small downloadable and I may be wrong, and if I am forgive me David, but MP focused. For me the singleplayer was just as huge a part as the multiplier was. I just loved completing it for each drivers story.

Whats worse is what happens when they shut TWM PS3 down? I doubt they will support this forever. I was thinking of selling my PS3 to save towards a PS4. If there is no TM though I will need this to keep my TM fix at least until online is shut down.

I agree with everything you said. Only thing is TM 2 is dated to the point of not being fun. TM PS3 is the best TM game ever based on it's gameplay. TM Black was the former champ. TM Black is still an amazing game.
Still my favorite storyline wise.

You know I still like the previous games over black storyline wise. I think black was a bit too dark and I didn't much care for how the stories all interwove into each other as much. I like the simple twisting of wishes with a minor cross over here and there the way it was always done before. Didn't much care for the design of Calypso in black either.

Gameplay wise black was the previous champ no doubt. I do agree though that Twisted metal PS3 is without a doubt the new champ gameplay wise. They nailed it. Where as black was a tad too fast this one was dead perfect. Either way I can say I've loved every Twisted Metal including the 989 developed ones. Theirs may have been a lot goofier and the gameplay different but they were still fun and good in their own right. Course that said I certainly don't consider them canon at all because the wishes did get really really goofy. I think that's part of their charm though. Where as all the David and Co developed ones were somewhat serious theirs were more lighthearted and funny.

I really would kill for a return to form. I would kill for a PS4 Twisted metal with individual drivers per car and the same gameplay as the PS3 version. If they were to do that and have a proper working online from the start I could then let the series die happily because then I'd have my perfect Twisted Metal.

I completely disagree, focusing on multiplayer was the right thing to do. Can you honestly say that the stories in Twisted Metal were great? They were fun to watch, but that's not the reason you played Twisted Metal. Well, at least not the reason I played Twisted Metal. I play it for the crazy car combat, and in that sense it doesn't make a difference who is driving the car either.

Over a year later and I still enjoy Twisted Metal PS3 the same way I enjoy the others. I can easily set up an AI bot match on whatever map and loadout I want and have a blast, and I can get up to three friends locally to play a long. It's really no different than before, only now there was more of a focus on the actual cars and weapon designs.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I find it hard to imagine many people played any Twisted Metal mainly for the story and not for competing against their friends.
