There must be. Football is there to make the masses cheer, to act like an enhancer of local culture and a recognizable brand of a region. It's also an ambassador that can greatly influence the attractivity of a region, or people. Madrid get their money from the Spanish state, therefore it's only normal that they pay attention to the situation of football in other regions of Spain too. It's not a moral obligation, it's almost payback for the generosity they benefit from.

Now, even in places clubs don't directly get help from the state, a non-written principle of solidarity applies, just like when Bayern saved Dortmund from bankruptcy by lending money to it to honour short-term bills.

I don't dislike Madrid but their selfish behaviour is sociopathic in the strict sense. Add to that they can't win titles and mismanage their money and you have a national problem. I am almost 100% positive Real Madrid has a more negative than positive effect on the Spanish economy and international perception. But that must be measured with relevant metrics at hand.

Also La Liga last week was hilarious. Barca tied with Celta Vigo thus Madrid had the chance to reduce the gap between them but ended up in a draw with Zaragoza so no change there. Atletico had the chance to take back the second spot from Madrid but they ended up in a draw with Valencia so no change there either. Sociedad, being fourth in the table (thus CL qualification), could have kept a 3-point lead from Malaga who's in the fifth spot but instead tied with Espanyol. Valencia would be right behind Sociedad now if their match didn't end in a draw with Atletico as mentioned earlier. Betis and Getafe, both who could possibly reach the 4th spot, played against each other this monday and no one scored in that game so no change there as well. Malaga were one lucky team as they won their match. To summarize this:

Rankings:

1. Barcelona
2. Real Madrid
3. Atletico Madrid
4. Real Sociedad
5. Malaga
6. Valencia
7. Real Betis
8. Getafe

Except Malaga going up +1 not much changed in the top 8 positions due to this:

College football is more like watching the Championship than Nextgen/Reserves. The players for the top level teams are really fucking good and many are good enough to be playing on pro teams already, there are just some regulations that prevent it (you have to be at least 2 years removed from turning 18). NCAA football is definitely my preference to the NFL.. it's amazing, the crowds are bigger, the passion is stronger.. I love it.

Well Dyadyun did play exceptionally well in Rubin's last game so I can see him being rewarded with another start. Plus 0-0 is what Rubin is playing for anyway so goalscoring doesn't matter.

I remember the Ken Dorsey run Miami teams were so loaded a decade ago that you would swear they could give the Browns or the Bengals a run.

For those wondering, college sports in the US are just academies for the pro level. The quality in many ways for football and basketball is just as good. And as Meier points out, some time preferred.
