RUMOR - Watch Dogs, ACIV to require online connection (now with source!)

The source's question mark makes it look like they're asking if something is correct, more than declaring a statement.

I thought in the GamerTrailer's show after PS4 Sony Meeting Geoff K interviewes the devs - they said it didn't require online - but you get a different experience if online as the game sis about connectivity including what other players are up to - could be wrong its been a while. Not sure if they are on GamerTrailer's site

Why the fuck does AC IV need to be online, what would they gain from that?

If Watch_Dogs turns out to be a persistent world game, then I could understand always online being necessary for it.

Considering Ubisoft did exactly this for the PC versions of Assassin's Creed 2 & Splinter Cell Conviction, it wouldn't surprise me if they tried again. It wouldn't also surprise me if the response was an almighty "fuck off"

Ubisoft already tested this shit in a console with Assassin's Creed 3: the Pivot Points search in the post-game.
It was a "single-player always connected" mini game.

If you are not connected, it's impossible to find all the Pivots and to unlock the Animus hacks.

Watch Dogs is a game I HOPE doesn't require always online, just because I want to be able to dick around in the world without affecting others or them affecting me. Just cause total anarchy. If it's still a good game and uses always online smartly I'll probably deal though, even if I'm disappointed.

ACIV is a game that'd be stupid and frustrating to do it with, but it seems to me that only the second's really of interest to play anyway.

Gonna have to take a stand on games that require this as well. I will not purchase either title if this is a requirement. People don't want consoles that are useless without an internet connection, seems like Microsoft is the one forcing this.

always online = our new DRM of the future masked behind a bullshit excuse of saying it's needed for what they need to do in the game....

terrible news. will not buy either

Companies are going to ram this shit down our throats until people give in or start to vote with their wallets.

Since the majority of people are willing to just bend over and take it in the ass by big companies anymore, we'd better get used to it.

Damn, I was interested in ACIV. I've actually been enjoying the "free" version of AC3 I got so much that I bought the season pass! I just got a boat in the game too, which sold me on the next game.

Surely one of the consoles it'll release on won't require a constant connection.

So two big third party games are allegedly always online, does this mean they won't be sold on the Playstation? (Everyone knows they will) So if this rumor is true I guess the assumption would be that PS is always online.

EDIT: Or at least have to be online to play specific games that demand it, makes sense actually just like the comment that PS4 will play used game unless the publisher blocks it.

I didn´t have the impression at all. It looked more like a standard open world single player game to me.

They made it clear that other gamers playing their games can mess with you and you can mess with them.
“Basically, Jonathan, our creative director was playing agent Pearce at the conference, and I was playing another character, who hacked into him, who had his own objective and we crossed paths. It was basically two players who crossed paths with their own objectives.”

“We definitely want to blend in multiplayer online and singleplayer in ways that haven’t been done before,” says Guay.

Reminds me of Demon Souls and Dark Souls. Those single player games that have unique online implementations.

Uhh, just because the game has to always be online doesn't meant the system has to be too. Certainly the Wii's not an always online system despite housing an always online game (Dragon Quest X.)

What this probably means is that Microsoft and Sony aren't getting in their way if they really want to do it, which is OK if they actually have a design that benefits from it, but is shit if they don't. Though an offline mode would be nice in case they pulled servers so Watch Dogs doesn't end up dead weight.

The PS3 already has always-online games, thanks to Capcom!
I think the digital version of Tomb Raider as well, if I remember right.

Let's not forget that Ubisoft is the shitty company that tried to pull this crap on PC too with their disgusting DRM and failed.

For the love of god guys, please be vigilant because it's usually at the beginning of gens that these assholes are trying to pull shit like this off.

Soo, in Watch Dogs, does that mean I would be forced to endure other players coming into my game fucking everything up? Because I just want to play the game by myself.

Well, the difference (or so one would hope) is they're really designing the game around online play, rather than a dial home thing because they're afraid everyone's a pirate (while the pirates figure out how to disable it and play without.) There's still other issues, especially if it's forced online interactivity, but it's the difference between an MMO like WoW and a hack & slash like Diablo III.

Yeah that's why I added the edit, if the rumors are to be believed then I wouldn't be surprised if more than one publisher does this. Just like back when project $10 first came out.

Still buying it. I don't have a problem with an internet connection, and neither do most of the people who don't like this.

Same. I dont game 24/7 like some here do so its not like I'd suffer if my internet ever went down for a day or two. How often do people's phones, cable or power go out? Not too often. And if t did? Well i dunno, whats wrong with maybe reading a book or going for a walk, plenty fime to game later. Then again some are insane with constant gamng. Like playing games while on the pot, LOL.

It's just another crappy excuse ala SimCity. Dark Souls had a very similar system and it played fine offline.

Yeah, it's why it's hard to make it compelling enough of a justification. It's POSSIBLE I suppose, but it's going to have to go more on the MMO side than Dark Souls did.

The only footage we have of that is the end of the first E3 demo where that other player appears nearby. Everything else was a purely SP game.
Fairly certain that they've at least shown other players' usernames in every single trailer that they've released...

On topic, I'm fine with Watch_Dogs but AC4 can go screw itself.

Edit: To clarify why, Watch_Dogs seems to be genuinely designed around online functionality, but we know for a fact that AC isn't... since we've played 5 (?) AC games already.

When Ubi said they'd go easy on the DRM, they were trolling us.
It's for the cell phone stuff, you know. Gotta make sure you're online for that. Always. It wouldn't be the same offline. IT WOULDN'T BE THE SAME.

For ACIV it's uh. For a better experience. It's for a better experience.
