Microsoft Issues Apologies Over Inappropriate Comments

Microsoft...PLEASE institute a "no twitter" policy for your employees. PLEASEEEE

Not only will this stop incidents like this from happening, it will also take Major Nelson and Arthur off twitter.

Every employer in the Gaming Industry should do that, IMO.

I mean, the boss of Eidos Montreal had to go in front of cameras one time because someone made a very stupid comment on Facebook (or twitter) when our newly elected prime minister's victory party was crashed by a guy (who wasn't all there in the head) with a gun with the intentions to kill her. And he did kill someone.

If this guy actually got fired over this, I'll refuse to buy durango purely on those grounds... always online or not.

Microsoft can go fuck themselves if they fired a guy for expressing his opinion.

Or, he could stay he fuck off twitter and not potentially ruin the company's PR strategy for their next console. Not to mention representing the company you work for by being a complete asshole. If he actually did get fired from this, he's going to have a hell of a time finding new work.

I don't want the guy to get fired, but as many have said if in this day and age you don't understand how you can't wear the company shirt and go to the biggest social media sites talk shit related to your company practices then I don't know what to tell you.

I think the 2nd part will make the world a much better place.

There are times when applauding that someone lost their job is a dick move. Then there are times like this when someone brings that on themselves. Twats tweeting about features of an unannounced/unreleased console in the asshole manner in which he did deserved a firing. Even if he just plainly said or hinted "It will require an always online connection." in a tweet I would still have fired him. He went off plan. Talked about something he shouldn't have and should be fired as a result and will be lucky if he isn't sued. They make people sign NDA's for a reason.

Look on the bright side. Somewhere down the line, perhaps someone who was out of work and actually has some tact and intelligence might get a job out of this.

This is bullshit. My PC doesn't have to be always online, my iPad doesn't have to be always online, my android phone doesn't have to be always online, the Ps4 won't have to be always online, the Wii U doesn't have to be always online, my Laptop doesn't have to be always online, shit I don't have anything or know of any physical product that has be always online, so no.

No no no NO.
I'm not sure why this is difficult to grasp (well, I have my suspicions). I can download Game of Thrones on to my iPad and watch it in my car. Or, I can take it with me to my parent's, who only use 3G for internet access, and watch it there on their nice TV. No internet checkups necessary.

That's being a complete asshole?

"This man, will be hanged."

I wonder if this fool has stopped his crusade now? And my iPhone hasn't had online outside of wifi for months, and everything still works a treat.

Umm... having Wi-Fi means you are on-line I am pretty sure of that.

The guy is an ass and getting into twitter spats with another person is a sure way to look stupid in public. The issue I have with him is not his twitter but his credential to work as Microsoft Creative Director ... the guy is the man behind Star Wars Kinect and Microsoft feel that he fits to lead them as creative director? His twitter comments should tell you what kind of leadership ability he has.

I don't see the twitter comment as inappropriate. It is twitter, not a place for the thin-skinned or for expecting well-thought dialog. The problem is the 720's always on "feature".

Telling consumers to deal with it IS inappropriate.

What did they say?

Okay, this Orth guy was a dick, we apologize.

We wouldn't offend our loyal costumers.

Always online?

Well... can't comment about that.

If the rumor isn't true, they should have said.

So... it's official by now... welcome "always online" mode.

I feel kind of bad for the guy, but honestly, how could he not have seen this coming? If you're even remotely some sort of public figure, Twitter isn't for joking around with your buddies anymore.

He should have watched what he said, but public figure? Did you know who Orth was until this shit hit the fan?

He wasn't telling consumers to deal with it, he was joking with his friend. Microsoft's apology seems to be scapegoating Orth while avoiding to address the actual issue.

And so GAF produces yet another highly educated McDonald's employee.

Maybe professionals should stay off of twitter. The incidence of people slaying themselves professionally is rising exponentially. It's like douche-bag Darwinism at work.

A big mistake in my opinion. They seem to have completely misread the situation by focusing on the comments about not living in the city and not what people are actually outraged/angry about.

Thing is if they were to address the comments about required Online, they would have to acknowledge the existence of the nextbox before their official reveal. Something MS has yet to do. Just saying.

I know a lot of people have said this, but there are ways to dismiss a claim without directly acknowledging a new console/product.

Always online - We have never mandated this as a requirement, nor do we intend to moving forward.

We wouldn't seek to limit our consumer base by implementing any features that might result in consumers being unable to take advantage of our products.

There are plenty more, but it is entirely possible to dismiss a claim in the situation MS find themselves. Their PR company would have told them this and come up with a great many ways to dismiss the claims and defuse the story, the fact that they didn't is very telling.

They can simply spew the standard "Sorry, we don't comment on rumors and speculation" line that has stood the test of time.

MS really need to announce and just let the shit storm happen.

Its like every leak is tugging at a bandage slowly pulling out arm hair. They need to just stop pussy footing around and yank it off in one big go.

Plus I really want to see what they got. Everything about the next xbox sounds just a horrible disaster unless they have some crazy deals going on for huge exclusive 3rd party support which is the current theory. I wonder what they got that can make "always online" worth it.

They could have something big that we dont know about or it could be another case of MS being out of touch and not knowing how people use there devices anymore (Windows 8)

I have a feeling if all the rumors are true, a lot of people will have the look on their faces like on your avatar. lol

MS knows how to treat their customers right. Look at this sweet birthday gift they just sent me:

A quarter! Thanks Gammy.

And yet they send free points every month via the rewards program.

The fact that they had to officially come out to say this shows they are listening to the negative feedback from the always online rumours. If they turn around and announce that the Nextbox is always online I'll be very surprised.

I think you're the only one who would be surprised.

I guess it depends on if they saw this fiasco as people getting upset over the always-online rumor or just over this guy's antics.

So is Microsoft really just going to sweep this under the rug till they unveil the console?

I don't give a shit what the asshole said really, the implications of an always online console is all I care about.

shandy706

We don't care about that. Tell us what we want to hear, MS. Tell us there is no "always online".

This generalization needs to stop.

I want "always online" for updates and game interconnectivity.

I do not want "must always be online JUST to play a game...even single player".

Those are two completely different things.

yea either he's gone or will get reprehended. They might actually wait a few weeks/months before really doing anything so this could die down.

EDIT: and the PR response doesn't exactly confirm or deny always online, so we still got to wait for the announcement.

Yes, they are. It's the whole we don't discuss rumors and speculation thing. It's the job of too many marketing/strategy people in these companies to plan all this stuff out and stick to it.

Notice that Microsoft still refuses to comment on the substance of the tweets. Can't help but wonder if they are seriously rethinking this "always online" nonsense.

Neither MS or Sony in this situation would comment on it either way. Even if true they're not gonna talk about specifics or lend any credence to one loudmouth employee. Companies just don't do that. Same reason why Sony hasn't talked more about the used game specifics. They reveal information according to their own timeline and own terms. It's frustrating, but stuff like this is too big to let their plans for information reveal to get derailed. Certainly the evidence is mounting, but them refusing to address the specifics sheds no new light on their actual plans.

publishers want it that's why.

ms is more anticonsumer thats why it will implement it,sony will let it fall to the publishers to decide if they want to make their game always-online.

But there's a difference here. If Microsoft does it on a console level, the publishers don't have to provide that infrastructure for a server. If Sony does NOT do it, then the publisher or developer has to provide the server infrastructure to interface with the game.

So maybe publishers will bother doing this for certain games, but it will definitely not be the norm if it costs them more money to maintain.

Stupid to apologize.

Everything is so political and most people are looking to score points or play the victim.

Did they issue an apology after Peter Moore said, "You know, things break." prior to owning up to the RRoD clusterfuck? That was an actual customer service issue.

With as much rage that's be going around the internet regarding the always on issue, I feel like Microsoft would have already shot that rumor down if it weren't true. They could be reconsidering it now after seeing the negative reactions of so many, however. This apology means shit to me; all I wanna hear is whether the system requires a constant internet connection or not.

They can simply spew the standard "Sorry, we don't comment on rumors and speculation" line that has stood the test of time.

Indeed and that's exactly what they've done. The problem is that it's lost all meaning so whenever it's used, people naturally assume the rumour is true and not without reason as history has shown that whenever that comment is made, the turns out to be 99 times in 100.
