Millionaire tries to get $829 via kickstarter to send daughter to RPG maker camp?

2014 will bring us another Susan Wilson project:

"My daughter defeated the internet trolls. Now she wants to go to space!"

goal: $30 million

Oh god @ Joseph Cecil Smith "privacy advocate" new post. Fucking nut job.

I'm tempted to make a new post about how making the world a better place involves lying about iPhone cases you've made but I fear kickstarter will ban me.

thank you much reverendphil, Johnny, and everyone in here who has tried to make PEACE in this projects comments sections.. remember, those who oppose this project on principle are not the ones who threatened to break into people's houses and rape the kids.. those threats were made.. huge numbers of people secretly harassed backers and the creators of this project.. I know for a fact that Susan has worked every day trying to deliver the goods to the backers... and Kenzie's games should turn out to be amazing gems.. and kids are being offered MIT education because Susan and Kenzie said, Let's share the wealth of Kickstarter's amazing support. I have watched the good intending backers who disagree with this project gradually seek higher principled ground.. and some of them even have realized wow, Susan is telling the entire truth here.. all i would ask is for the detractors to keep an open mind and give the girl time.. there's a game+++ in the works, and MIT is focused on that.. don't stress guys.. and it is almost all guys who are repeatedly posting.. very few actual females and fewer actual females who actually have small children.. Moms like Susan don't steal from their kids.. they sacrifice EVERYTHING to advance their kids. I would point to the way Susan has spent hundreds of hours this month repeatedly responding to the detractors.. she's patient, strong, principled, honest, truly smart and very sensitive.. what really happened, is a little girl went to her mom and said mom i want to make a video game.. and my brothers said i can't and the mom said , here let's put in on kickstarter.. and daughter, i love you so much, even if kickstarter will not send you to RPG camp, i mom will give you the $829 anyway, i love you...
then kickstarter came in and said, yes, we 1000 strong love Kenzie's dream too.. and a FEW MALES came in and for $1 those males have posted over 1500 comments. a lot of those comments were deleted: the comments had gotten up to 2000 did you remember that? look there are only 1672 now.. lots of comments were deleted.
this means people are using $1 donations to harass susan.. and I swear it has hurt this game being developed.. and susan has bled inside for this project.. because she loves her daughter and her boys and her family so much.
imagine please all you good people.. having someone post your address and then strangers threatening to break in and rape your kids.. that happened to susan.. all i ask is please, close ranks and disagree if you want, but protect the sanctity of kickstarter and this project and all moms and families by being so very principled.. this project deserves the chance to succeed.. and i keep reminding susan that only a handful of $1 protesters are in here fomenting.. the VAST MAJORITY of backers have remained 100% silent and 110% supportive.. and that include MIT, ADOBE and large corporations with huge resources.. silent backers.
one last salient point: EVERY SMART SUPER SMART CREATIVE GENIUS THAT ENCOUNTERED THIS PROJECT IMMEDIATELY SUPPORTED IT.. only less talented people with no great work going on came in looking for relevance and started protesting repeatedly.. anyone with important work would never have time to disturb a girls rpg camp dream so much.
other projects with 1000 backers often have about 10 comments, not 1670.. that's coming from the repeat $1 protesters repeatedly asserting there is a lack of trustability, etc for this $829 project request.. Susan is not a gamer, not a programmer, not a software developer.. she has no idea how to structure workflows to get the deliverables to you fast. but her team is doing just that.. and all for you the backers.. you kids Will benefit.. i would ask you all to help with all your heart and the most you lose is about $1.. you can still come in here and complain for years after the project loses.. but what if it wins?
peace

So thanks to MIT's generosity, they don't need Kickstarter then.

If they did, it'd be for tuition which is explicitly against KS's TOS. Even a smart super smart genius could see that.

Think Susan is smart enough to use proxy or VPN? Or would she be so bold to make a different account on her same IP?

Maybe KS could check, though we are getting a little paranoid.

I have a daughter who likes games

I wish I thought of this :(

Haha! I have a 3 year old that LOVES Mario, Sonic, Mutant Mudds, etc....

He ever knows/understands the concept of money, somewhat (how a 9 year old doesn't, is kind of odd in and of itself).

I even took a few game design classes at a local college, and have multiple programs installed on my PC (Unity, CryEngine [from the original FarCry], GameMaker...

Perhaps I should throw up a legitimate KS campaign "Help me raise $100 million to make an indie platforming game for my son, so I don't have to send him to camp..."

As I'm typing this, he is playing Mario Kart DS...during his "nap" time.

Well as far as I know she'd need different credit cards for each account, but it's really down to what her goals are. Is she doing this for the money, or to damage kickstarters rep?

All we know is, she's smart enough to scam people and get away with it. Multiple times.

I just did a dollar to do that. The amount does not really matter since you can cancel whenever you want to before the deadline. Or do you mean after it has ended?

Either that or he's Susan in disguise. "Few males" just sounds off to me.
I thought this thhe other day, but if you were gonna do this you would make your persona normal right? I know Susan is manipulative (being nice here) but dam that dude is bat shit crazy - I rather have the whole Internet hounding me and have no one one my side than have him backing my corner.

Still never say never lmao.

Dude has to be a troll. The praise and uninhibited, childish defense of Susan is just laughable.

I hope he reveals himself in the final hours and backs out of the project, taking a big chunk of change with him.

I SWEAR TO GOD IF THIS SCAM GOES THROUGH, I'M GOING TO BOYCOTT ALL THE CRAPPY 'GAMING JOUNRALIST' OUTLETS THAT DIDN'T MAKE UP FOR THEIR MISTAKE AND POINT THIS WOMAN OUT AS A SCAM!

Really lol? Can't say I agree with that but each to their own.
I just don't have a problem with people spending their money in any way their like.

Would you say they are fools? The woman asked for less that 1,000 yet they keep giving in more and more, it is obviously a scam, but they give in anyway, and is not like they cannot withdrawn their contribution if they feel scammed.

If anyone is getting scammed is their own bloody fault, can't really feel bad for them, nor be angry because of it :/

Okaaaay a CAD designer you say?

Creator Susan Wilson 10 minutes ago
@Vernano - Just to be clear, you are wrong and you are being the opposite of helpful. Yes, I pitched the Life-Case and I hired a CAD designer to make it. As I clearly said in prior posts and to reporters, it was inspired by Incipio's Stowaway case (which I still own) but which is too small and has a flaw in the design. The case only hold an ID, 2 credit cards and maybe a single $20 bill. THAT's it! I wanted something that held a car key and more. Look at the pictures and you can see it's not reselling the Incipio case.
No, it didn't have a market so it didn't succeed. That doesn't make it a scam. That makes me an entrepreneur. And like it or not, people like me are what keeps the economy in the U.S. running. Small business entrepreneurs fuel the US economy. So cut the name calling and get off of this campaign.
You are a pox and rest assured you'll be removed from this campaign. I DO NOT WANT YOUR MONEY OR ADVICE. YOU ARE UNINFORMED and ABSURD. How can I be recognized by FORTUNE and Ernst & Young for my success as an entrepreneur if I'm a scammer? If you knew anything about the business world, you'd know it doesn't work that way. It took me years to build my reputation and while I'm proud of my successes (b/c yes, I've done what many only dream of) that also involved a fair number of failures. That's part of the cost of entry to be an entrepreneur. That does not make me a scammer, or a liar or a threat to society.
AND MY NAME IS SUSAN as you've repeatedly been told! NOW PLEASE EXIT THIS CAMPAIGN!

The depth of the lid is exactly the same Susan. The design is exactly the same Susan.

Dear Vernano, i don't think Susan's side of the phone case has been told.. she actually was not scamming anyone with that project.. they had a designer create a different case or some details that are absent from all the accounts labelling that failed project a scam.. that said i do understand your points that i it looked shady or bad or whatever term you'd call a failed project. This project was for a girls gaming dream.. the girl's the Decider in this project.. and Kickstarter supporters gave her more than she asked for... that's not a reason to demand a lot more from Susan than other project creators who have gotten a lot more money and been far less accountable than Susan has been, and i suspect you will see Susan be in the future very giving.
Also, i know she's so busy she has been advised to not spend time in here negotiating peace with those who donate $1 then post so many times.. it's not worth that.. time is very precious and MIT is asking Kenzie to come and learn with them so she can make games.. apparently in the last month, none of Susan's kids have starved, or gone without clean clothes.. their home has always been clean somewhat.. and Susan has no maids.. she's the maid. the Mom, and a few other hats... i have found her nothing except well intending and sincere.. and she's the first to say she's not a gamer or programmer.. so she didn't have any expertise in delivering what was promised for this project.. because that's her daughter's Job.. Kenzie is the decider and she's been dreaming up really cute games for you all.. and they opened the project to other kids too.
peace

They are definitely fools there is no denying that and I don't have any empathy for them either. I can still get angry at her and her many attempts to con people though.

Does Susan really think that we think that 9-year-old girls write like this?

My parents are into technology as users but my Mom has to hire programmers and developers sometimes for her work. She's really glad I like computers and programming because she says as a business person she feels like she's held hostage by developers.

Yes, she does. She thinks she has us all fooled. If you read Susan's ghostwriting of Kenzie out loud it's fucking hilarious. Try it!

In reality her con has only worked on a very small percentage of people who have come across it.

I simply lament that it has worked at all.

I compared the picture she used for IndieGoGo of the phone case, and the picture of the Case sold by shops, and it's the exact same case lol. She didn't design it, it's exactly the same! All she did was resell it for 10x the money lol.

My heart bleeds for her. I changed my avatar earlier as I don't think she is getting enough positive exposure and wanted to do some good in the world. Spread the good word people.

Anyone else notice she has got KS to remove Vernarno's link to that blog about the iPhone cases scam? Either that or he removed it himself which I think unlikely. Can't have the backers seeing the truth now can we!

Haha isn't it just. If as she says she wanted to make it bigger it would be deeper, but it isn't, it's the same. She just plonked some keys on it. The lies are just terribad.

There's no way for backers to edit comments on KS, so she probably complained and KS removed the link.

Oh man, DRM has entered the picture. LOL hold on to yer butts.

Creator Susan Wilson 20 minutes ago

@KS Backer, that's also what the team at MIT Game Lab (and others have offered to help with). At this point, I'm just trying to survive the actual campaign and then I'll figure out distribution (ideally DRM Free).
Kids_at_harvard.small
Creator Susan Wilson 22 minutes ago

@KS Backer, No that hasn't been done yet. But I'm confident it will be whatever is standard procedure. I understand the DRM free preference and I'll look into the details as we get closer to the July release.

Creator Susan Wilson 29 minutes ago

@KS Backer, she's making the game in RPG Maker and my understanding is RPG maker only creates games for PCs. But again, I'm not a gamer. When her dad gets home from work, I'll ask him. I imagine the game will be available for purchase after it's done (but that assumes it's a game with demand). I know RC and I have been talking about doing some cool things with the game for backers (including signed CDs of the game in a case), but that's a work in process.

As many people have pointed out, this project is all about a 9 year old building her first RPG (and the team at MIT informed me that RPGs are actually the hardest games to make). So most people aren't expecting some huge commercial success b/c this is really about Kenzie making a game - not paying others to make it for her. That said, I'm hopeful it turns out great given the support and network she has access to now, but I have no idea where it would be available to buy at this point.

Anybody want to bet the only way for backers to get their "game" (a five minute demo made by someone in the MIT Games Lab) will be to register on Susan's site, join whatever con she's running there, and sign up for her newsletter or some shit like that?

I've been checking into this thread sporadically, so correct me if I am wrong but has this story not been picked up by any reputable web publications?

This seems like a very interesting story about the realities of kickstarter's success and the repercussions of that success, but I only ever see it being discussed here or on other message boards.

It was in the beginning, defending Susan.
CNET's article
Kotaku's article

Past that, there has been nothing said or reported from them.

So I've been keeping up with this thread and haven't really posted much, but why don't we all flood Kickstarter with reports at/around the same time, basically copy and pasting the OP, or summarizing it, and see if that gets Kickstarters attention?

Or flood Kotaku or any other news site and recommend this story to them? Surely if enough people do it Kickstarter/journalist will listen?

I won't post Susan's absurd rebuttal to the article. But this response by the author is pretty solid.

Just because you say there’s no “shred of truth to scam allegations” doesn’t mean the evidence magically is not. You can’t refute something by saying it’s not true and then do nothing else. I could say, staring at the sun is bad for you, but all you’d do is shout ‘no it’s not’ and then stare at the sun and ruin your eyes.

People at uproxx.com aren’t real reporters either. Neither is any other gaming journalism site you cite (Penny Arcade). None of them are. Hell, I admit Play4Real is still trying to break that gaming journalism barrier into real journalism.

You claim that people are overlooking “very rich men” who raise millions on Kickstarter. Why not say very rich people? Don’t try to pull the gender card again. You’ve already used it way too many times making this Kickstarter and probably to your defense as well. People are going to hate scammers no matter their gender.

And about the “very rich men” making millions, that “gullible cybermob” are probably critics of those too if they are scammers like yourself so don’t say it’s a gender thing or a fact that people are specifically targetting your campaign over worse and more damaging campaigns. Oh wait, you even say “those men shouldn’t be attacked”. Oh okay, way to destory your own argument there.

“This is about envy and jealousy and reminds me of elementary school kids bullying and being mean because they can get away with it.” You are right, some people are going to shout obscenities and be rude, sexist, mysogynistic, and crass. But if you lump those together with legitimate complaints, then you’re ignoring a problem.

“I have NOTHING TO HIDE!” You seem to have plenty to hide. You already started making updates backers-only and you’ve wanted to kick people out who only have made one dollar pledges and probably also complaining about your project on your comments page. Again, you’re just ignoring the problem. Furthermore, hiding substantial updates like how this is no longer about an RPG camp, how you’re getting a laptop out of this, and more.

“I don’t settle for the status quo.” “I like to explore life” “I’m willing to put myself out there – flaws and all.” You’re bringing up things that are completely irrelevant to make yourself look better. That’s all you’re doing.

“Not because I’m a millionaire” Well at least we know you’re a millionaire. That’s something.

“I don’t plan on looking for a job soon.” Well, you’re a millionaire.

“I had the audacity to create and Kickstarter had the guts to allow and stand by their decision.” If you were an honest person trying to make a project like this, no one would have a problem. So don’t say the “cybermob internet” or whatever is going after you because you created something they don’t like. It’s not the project they don’t like, it’s you and the way you’ve handled it.

“At this point, aren’t you the scam artist because you’re actually making money off of printing outright lies” I wish I could make money off gaming journalism. I’m sure a lot of people would.

“in addition to just being wrong on so many levels, involves a minor” You’re the one who is in contact with her every day. People should be more concerned about that over some article on the internet.

I didn’t proofread this so I apologize for any mistakes.

This interview was fake?

Mrs. Wilson, I am completely aghast. This site, some articles about not video games forgiven, is generally filled with accurate and legitimate reporting. I am extremely alarmed that someone would fabricate this kind of thing.

Just earlier in the comments section, a hatemongering basement dweller spoke of punching your daughter. That’s how bad the internet is getting these days. Scum is everywhere. It’s hard for a hard working entrepreneur to make a living.

Jack (if that is your real name), you should be ashamed for writing false information. As Mrs. Wilson pointed out, lies and libel is not protected under the Free Speech amendment. Therefore, you have commited a felony for both libel, and having not video game articles on a video games website. Not since Kotaku have I seen such a horrifying breach of what is moral.

Good luck be with you, Susan. A fool and their money are soon parted, and some of us are just there to make that happen. I hope you separate many fools from many dollars now, and in the future.

Please continue to cash in on the feminism and women-empowerment card, it pisses literally everyone off and I get to laugh at their expense.

lol

Even the editor in this comment section shuts it down b/c the facts seem to be irrelevant to this gullible cybermob that appears to enjoy spreading lies and trying to ruin a person’s life over an $829 campaign while VERY RICH men raise millions of dollars on Kickstarter without question. It’s absurd.

This made me chuckle as well. Isn't this what is she is trying to do?

Those rich men she's referring to aren't raising money to put someone in a class and buy them a laptop. Two things that are explicitly against the TOS.

Those rich men have clear plans for legit games, usually with videos outlining the plans for said games. They're not catching the same kind of flak, not due to being men in a patriarchy, but because they are using Kickstarter as intended. If any of those rich men said "give me some money for my daughter (or son) and she/he'll figure out what the game is that they make only after going through a game design class that you're paying for and after purchasing a laptop you're paying for", then they'd get just as much shit, if not more.
