Dispute over whether DotA2 has passed LoL in the west; LoL 500k concurrent US+EU

All this debate over LoL/Dota, when SMITE is clearly the top dog.

I still don't understand why anyone would want to play these games for more than an hour a day. Especially when the communities are made up of 14 year old idiots.
I love Dota but I usually can only play like 2 matches (30-60 mins each) a day. It's such a competitive and concentration-intensive game that it's easy to get burned out. Everything in moderation, I say.

This news actually makes me kinda mad. I really dislike these gradual, never-real releases of eternally-beta games.

I would've loved to have given Dota 2 a try "when it came out," and now I bet I'm so far behind that I won't even bother.
Lol wut? There is no "behind" in Dota. You get matched with people of your skill level. The only thing you're behind in is your collection of hats cosmetics.

That the only cited source (which is an extremely poor source), has nearly twelve and a half times as many players on League as there are on Dota 2.

This article is dumb.

Nah, the article clearly says "which combines data from multiple sources, including real-time stats from Xfire's 23 million users."

It's a benefit to LoL that they even use Xfire because you would have to be daft to use Xfire and Steam at the same time. So the whole second part of your post is irrelevant.

And soon we'll be all over BALLS.

I've been thinking. Smart thing to do would to pick up one of these newcomers, stream your games, and become the "expert" in it. Much easier than trying to break into the Dota/LoL Scene. Pretty much what it seems people are doing with smite.

That depends on the new game getting some traction, though.

I really wonder how BAllS will do.

Can't we as Dota2 & LoL players just come together and bash HoN?

Why must we fight!

Look how LoL and DOTA2 implemented a simple feature as pause. Then see how HoN did it.
It's getting pretty hard to attack a game that basically does everything better on a technical level.

Only thing holding HoN back is the absence of a youtube chick, that occupies 90% of the video.

Someone please explain to me, what in the hell is this:

Do people follow LoL or her? It's annoying...

LoL's pause feature is the best in the genre though, no one else can beat it.

I like the flirty smirk she has in the client. I've never actually watched a single one, however.

She's a Riot employee that does community videos on a weekly basis and the videos are in the client. I'm pretty sure it's just fan submitted content (cosplay, etc.) that she goes over.

I prefer Na'vi's Polina

No, we have Smite for that.
I still maintain that once a month both communities shall get together and play smite

Problem is, if you have a source you mention it. So by only mentioning xfire, it makes one wonder, don't you think? And what's the point of using xfire and the league client?

A game that still peaks around 120k concurrent players which is more than CoD + Counterstrike + combined is dying?

Then FPS gaming on PC as we know is dead.

edit:
http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

CoD not even on that list lol...
Anyways it would of been at nr2 uncontested on that list if it was on Steam

FPS gaming on PCs is dead and the following weak shit killed it:

CoD
Unreal Tournament 3
Crysis 2/3
Consoles

Only game reasonably well-supported is Team Fortress 2 and BF3. Everything else has dropped off pretty fast. How I long for the glory days of UT99/2003 fast-twitch that defined PC FPS gaming and made it unique. Styling and creativity that appear long since gone.

Most of the people I associate with offline generally concede that the original Dotalikes are generally shameless clones with a bit of difference. League is a simplified anime eyes Dota, Newearth is gritty Dota, and Dota 2 is high res Dota.

All of the new Dotalikes are actually taking some interesting risks with a lot of interesting results.

I loves me some Dota 2, but I don't see how you come to this conclusion unless you're also counting Dota 1 activity (which is seemingly still monstrous). But they specifically limited this to NA and EU, whereas Dota 1 is pulling monstrous numbers in China and the like. A lot of somethings are not adding up.

I just got thirsty as hell.
Want to know two secrets? You're going to hate me in the future. She's also wearing boob stickers.

No way does dota have more players than lol.

Well dota is objectively a better game on the technical level. Thats pretty much accepted now by all moba fans except those in denial.

But league is more popular and these are team games. That's why I play league with my friends instead of dota 2. Don't have to deal with the community as much.

Also league's got that anime style that kids like, so all the kids be playing league over dota too.

DOTA2 is so good. All those years ago playing DOTA, I had no idea it would blow up into this. Also, guys remember the 12 Blademasters? DOTA2 needs its own version!

I feel there's so much more to be done in this micro-focused RTS genre beyond this simple mobs and lanes mechanic. The near infinite kinds of hero based maps in WC3 back proves this handily. As good as DotA is, I kinda wish someone would step up and try to innovate a bit more, at least vary up the map design (which I refuse to believe has stayed so static because of "balance"). At least LoL released that circular map mode a while back.

I agree. I also think that it's Valve's intention to do something like this, if the Winter events in DOTA2 were any indication. I think that as the game goes on, new modes of play will be introduced because it'll add value to the product and more opportunity to keep the playerbase buying hats and whatnot.

I wonder what are the stats for players logged in vs players currently in a match for both games. Since DOTA2 seems to have more of an in-game meny of client as opposed to LoL which kinda looks like a hybrid of a launcher and a browser, as well as Steam already providing community features like chat and whatnot, I'm pretty sure there's more idlers in LoL, but I'm really curious about the actual stats
And yes, I'm fully aware we'll never ever get those kinds of stats.
