Millionaire tries to get $829 via kickstarter to send daughter to RPG maker camp?

So the name of the game is going to be Truth & Trolls. How fitting of a name for this game.

How hard would it be for someone to make a rebuttal to Susan's game?

There has to be someone on here who's proficient with RPG maker. We can all pool in and help someone make it. Some name suggestions:

- Keep Up! The Game
- Greedy Sociopaths
- Waqar's Quest
- How to Scam 1400 People

She's being given a laptop?

She is no longer going to the camp?

She's using free stock images for the game?

WHAT DOES SHE NEED THE MONEY FOR?

Okay, seriously, everyone just needs to flood Kickstarter with complaints and what not. I'm going to send one now. There's no reason for this Kickstarter to even continue if she doesn't need the money anymore. This was to send a girl to camp, and she's no going anymore. The kickstarter isn't needed now.

EDIT: You need to make an account to report projects -.-

Well, free trip to Turkey. I'm so fucking done with Kickstarter. Luckily I never gave any business to Dell so fuck them too.

Will be interesting when 6 months from now Kinzie has zero interest in game design. What will she have learned? Play the victim card and idiots will throw money at you.

Or maybe she will continue just to get free trips everywhere. Or mom will want her to for those free trips. I still don't know what they'll contribute in Turkey, but meh.

So now with the 23k, I wonder what they'll do. Consider the CCL is at the 50k mark. Thinking may be most expensive trip to MIT ever.

So wait, the project descriptions says that this is for the camp, even with a screenshot of the receipt? (Nevermind the moral fact that you don't really need KS if you can afford it before the project goes through) and that any additional money goes towards a new laptop.

THEN on the updates tab which is only accessible once you're a backer she openly states that she will not attend said camp and that DELL is sponsoring her a new laptop anyway totally nullifying the reasons to back that kid in the first place.

How is that not a scam. "Back a 9y old kid to pursue her dreams, LOL J/K I just want your money - if we can get it to 50 000 that would be cool - Susan out"

You don't have to be a backer to see the update about Dell and the trip to Turkey, no longer going to camp but only MIT, and all. That one is open to the internet.

But yep. And I like how's she's not changed the description on the KS except to remove at some point her brothers were giving her crap. At least I think she removed that part. She's done so much editing it's hard to keep up at this point.

oh my, those character pictures are giving me RPG maker flashbacks !

I tried to make an RPG once when I was like 8 or 9. THAT didn't last long (like everything at that age).
I don't mean to put a child down, yadda-yadda, but these 'WIP' screens are something anyone with even a basic knowledge of RPG Maker could whip up in 5-10 minutes. Its using all default stuff, and the design itself is pretty simple. The hero is even the default one.

but she just started development, she's experimenting, etc

Millionaire tries to get $829 via kickstarter to send daughter to RPG maker camp, daughter's not going to RPG maker camp, mother gets $23k+, free laptop and trip to Turkey for a networking event.

Haha!
And as always, fuck Kickstarter for allowing this to continue to completion.

Getting someone fired at MS is apparently a lot easier than getting a scam KS killed.

:(

LOL oh man that made me laugh louder than it should have. But so, so true.

Millionaire tries to get $829 via kickstarter to send daughter to RPG maker camp, daughter's not going to RPG maker camp, mother gets $23k+, free laptop and trip to Turkey for a networking event.

And since MIT is free, outside of apparently paying to go there, they have a free 23k in bank for that vacation. I'd say they'd use it for creative common license, but that is apparently 50k stretch goal now. Guess they put it as a stretch to milk whatever little they can towards end. I'm still just honestly wondering where that money is going. Because we know it wouldn't even be the 6k she budgeted to go to MIT.

Here is a kickstarter to send someone to a camp... which this isn't fulfilling.

Holy hell, I should start a Kickstarter to travel around the world, and then I'll say "I have so much money that I don't need to go around the world."

I complained to Kickstarter. They didn't respond. So amazing.

They probably haven't responded to anyone. I told them how I felt and that I would no longer back any projects via their site if they let projects like this go through. They didn't respond, two days later, I pulled all my pledges and went paypal. I ain't even mad anymore. This project is successful and there's nothing we can do about it. It seems people enjoy being robbed.

She already broke the TOS before that. Don't think another breach will matter to KS.

That update from yesterday is hilarious. So passive aggressive and inaccurate on every level.

They’re mean and vicious and they just might come after you next. You’ve got to help! They have to be stopped. They have to be exposed. Alex didn’t ask for this. All she wanted was a chance to chase her dream. She didn’t even know they existed…until they turned her mother to stone. Without warning, her 9 year old world has been turned upside down. Though they’d been there moments before, Alex no longer saw her father or brothers. They weren’t stone but they were gone. Where were they? What happened to them?

No spoiler alert needed, but Kenzie & Company (a.k.a. her brothers & Dad) are busy creating characters with personality, depth and just enough quirks

Still LOL at the evil brothers now being a part of the development.

The trolls, having mysteriously and suddenly arrived on the Isle of Kent, are turning women to stone and making their families disappear. There are several troll clans including Forest Trolls, Swamp Trolls, Cave Trolls, Mountain Trolls & Aqua Trolls.

I swear if they haven't already, 4Chan needs to get on this project.

$50,000 STRETCH GOAL: Creative Commons Custom Asset Library Available for Free to the Indie Gaming Community
Still pushing this?

You asked about a stretch goal and so did we but there was only one logical choice that complied with Kickstarter and benefits as many in the indie gaming community as possible.

LOL, so transparent. How many people fall for this deception?

Dell has invited Mackenzie and me to be their guests at the Dell Women’s Entrepreneur Network, June 2-4th in Istanbul, Turkey. This year’s theme, Pay it Forward, reflects Dell & Intel’s commitment to support the next generation of women entrepreneurs and girls. Kenzie will join a group of Turkish girls in a conversation with Elizabeth Gore, Entrepreneur-in-Residence to the United Nations, and Rina Onur, co-founder of Peake Games, one of the Top 3 Social Gaming companies in the world.

• Philip Tan, Creative Director for the MIT Game Lab, is volunteering 1 week of his personal time in the Summer for in-person 1-on-1 mentorship sessions on game production and design with Mackenzie Wilson to help her produce her game. This volunteer time will be given whether or not the Kickstarter succeeds as it is in the spirit of replacing the RPG camp she can no longer attend.

• The MIT Game Lab frequently hosts game jams both online and on-site at MIT. We are in planning talks to host one for parents and kids, but the details have not yet been finalized. This is a regular occurrence at the Game Lab and is not tied to the success of this Kickstarter, but rather in the spirit of this and many other projects where kids make their own games.

• And we just learned Dell is seeding Kenzie’s project with a portable Alienware unit so she can take it with her to Istanbul, MIT, and anywhere else she’ll be working to make her dreams come true.

Care to modify that budget from last week? Oh, and fuck Dell.

How do we know all these supposed companies ARE giving them anything?

I still find it hard to believe any of it.

This thing has gone through so many changes on a day to day basis that it's mind-boggling to keep up with any of it.

Seems a new update is up. I guess it's a flimsy intro to "the game". The best typo quote from it..

Then you have awkwardly phrased things such as..

Though this thing doesn't sound like something a 9 year old wrote.

Beyond the story is Kenzie is now giving "free" content to backers. AT NO ADDITIONAL COST! Wow, they're really trying.

Love the addition of a 50k stretch goal.

And some lovely snipets from the Special Thanks section for your enjoyment:

I guess she's canceled the camp because they were silly enough on the receipt to post too much information. Now she's afraid Kenzie will get stalked or something.

Plus, at the end of it all, you can see some drawings.

So, now she's getting a free laptop, free tutoring sessions, etc. and despite all this, they put up another stretch goal -- 50k? What? They were struggling to come up with some decent stuff to use their current donations on. They offered the backers some wildly exaggerated numbers, like some extreme travel prices, extreme laptop prices, etc.

Why did she mention Istanbul, though?

I sent a Twitter to Philip Tan, asking if he is aware of the shady stuff going on around and with the kickstarter, and linked him to this thread.

https://twitter.com/djphiliptan

Seriously, this project looked like a scam from day one - but now the very project has completely changed; the initial goals aren't even a part of it anymore. The fact that this is completely against everything Kickstarter stands for and is about is one thing, but she has deceived backers several times by switching the goals, acknowledged that she doesn't know what to do with the money, yet keeps asking FOR MORE, and PEOPLE ARE STILL DONATING, and the majority still haven't withdrawn their donations. I ask again, who are these people?

Edit:

Philip Tan answered the Twitter message I sent him;

Christian S. J ‏@JacSolar
@djphiliptan are you aware of the shady stuff that has been going on around the Kenzie/Susan wilson KS?

Glad to see Corey back out and point out her new shady bs.

I thought maybe she got to him lol

Even then I don't like how he says, "This Kickstarter has 'evolved' in some good ways." It hasn't evolved in any good ways. It's merely devolved into nastier, greedier ways hidden underneath the phony pretense and manipulation by Susan.

Despite having the smarts to back out, Corey can't see the project for the all out con that it is.

I think he's just trying to be as polite as possible at this point and maybe he doesn't want that nut job Joseph Cecil Smith going after him lol

Then you see her latest update and everything her daughter is getting for free and this whole thing just looks even more disgusting at this point, it was never not shady like you said.

Its been bs since the start and its getting even more messed up towards the end. She's trying to get as much as she can right before this ends. Not shocking though considering who and what she's about.

@Corey, there's a lot of good things about Kenzie's project that are way beyond petty concerns about $20,000, which is the amount after processing, and likely to be lower because only 80-90% of transactions clear statistically.. $20,000 is not much to make a decent game.. most people i've read simply wanted to help Kenzie make a game and see how it turns out.. the average $10 pledge may result in a better game and it seems like they are really trying to do that."

These people think they're actually funding a full production of an RPG game now.

This had to have been the plan all along. Set the goal low, spread the word (all her twitter spam), manipulate people's emotions, tell people about how surprised and happy you are for their support, tell them that you're "listening to them" and adding more goals, and watch the pledges increase.

Well played, Susan. You evil parasite.

Read Art Factory's newest comment. I fear I'm getting dumber reading the comments by the backers.

ugh

The Art Factory 20 minutes ago

$20K isn't enough that the project which started as a 'Kickstarter Small Project' merits all the opposition.. it's important but also is giving the silent majority of backers a quiet say in affording the girl a chance to get her game on.. and MIT seems to be helping because of many reasons, partly the camp was not secure for a high profile project.. it got threats from all those who assert nefarious motives on the part of this $829 Kickstarter project to help a 9 year old girl make a computer game.. the continuous angry protests are not really well supported, the arguments were heard about 1000 times by the very silent vast majority of backers. so it's just re-peating comments the detractors have used to try and shut down the project.. and anyone who sees the details knows people crossed the lines on terms of service and the website had a lot of formal staff response, part of which was to absolutely re-affirm their commitment to the project. 100%.. so about maybe 10 people have posted about 1000 commments and those people pledged one dollar each and then posted hundreds of detracting comments repeatedly.. and the silent majority stayed quiet and has shown a peaceful resolve to let the girl try and make her game.. even as the detractors seem to gnash their teeth at the idea.. it's such a trivial thing to put so much opposition into.. it seemed like a lot of people just did so out of opportunity to attack Susan.

If the supporters think the "trolls" are opposed to the idea of a young girl making a game, they are truly lost. Do people not read anymore?

@alex
--- Checks and Balances
They are the people who will be working under Makenzie, companies she orders stuff from, etc. She is not going to be opening up her purse, toy show people were all the money is going to. But, the people who interact with her, Makenzie, and the game will know if something is amiss. Anyway, she has proven time and again that she is not pocketing the money and that's good enough for the companies going on board to help Makenzie and the backers. --- If you check pages back, I was a very huge skeptic on what was going on, now I'm on the side of Makenzie.

Of course Susan isn't pocketing the money - she's going to spend it on first class tickets and luxury hotel stays. Better yet, MIT and Dell will provide those for her.

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
I don't understand how people can fall for this, don't they want to at least investigate a little bit before putting money down..? Have they never heard of people using noble causes to extract money?

I think the saddest thing is that she pretends so much of what's been said is against her daughter. Even if she also lies about the good, it's probably very troubling for her to believe she's hated, when she's not.

She's basically shielding herself with her daughter, crying that her daughter is being abused to attract pitty and more money, when even if she was saying the truth she should do the opposite to protect her.

Adding information from page 77:

foobarry81 commenting at the mommy gamers said:
What I like about this interview is that the interviewer finds it such an inspiring story as it makes her 13yo daughter want to make a game herself. It is an inspiring story, and I’m glad her daughter got inspired. These stories should be told to inspire people all over the world and the internet is a great medium for them.

What I find baffling though it that at the same time the interviewer apparently forgets that she doesn’t even consider starting a Kickstarter project over her daughter being inspired herself, let alone asking for other people’s money even if she doesn’t need it AT ALL. The latter is exactly what Susan Wilson did. Susan Wilson never needed the $829 she initially wanted to raise. There were plenty of other ways to tell this story about a girl that wants to make her first RPG. The internet has so many different platforms. It could’ve been an exclusive huge story on The Mommy Gamers. And inspire all its readers and their sons and daughters. Yet for some reason the best way Susan Wilson could come up with was to ask other people for money she never needed…
Then his comment's second paragraph was censored so he e-mailed to them.
foobarry81 e-mailing the mommy gamers said:
Dear Ladies,

while I understand and respect your prerogative to edit any comments posted on the site, the way my comment on Episode 34 was "moderated" is downright abusive. It does no longer reflect my original message. So please either edit it so that it does or completely remove it.

My comment was balanced, pointing out both the good and the bad sides of the story. I didn't say anything that was incorrect: the $829 were never needed for the original project (Susan Wilson said so herself) and were possibly taken away from other kid's or women's projects that actually needed it instead.

As for the story itself: it is inspiring and The Mommy Gamers would've been an excellent place to bring it to exclusively. Because it's what this site is all about.

It was Susan Wilson's decision however to try and make a buck out of it, and take it to Kickstarter. You could argue that she was "just teaching her little girl and their brothers a lesson in life or something". But in all honesty, I think we all know that Kickstarter is about raising money, no more and no less. Kickstarter's guidelines even state that it's not meant for "fund my life" projects, which teaching your kids a lesson clearly is. So let's assume it wasn't about the latter, but plain and simple about raising money.

Also, in your podcast Susan Wilson clearly showed how she's an entrepeneur, trying even to get the interviewer to get "millions" out of the podcast. Now, I have nothing against entrepeneurship. It's what makes the economy tick. The deal with Kickstarter however is that you put your project out there to the public, open for scrutiny. You can't just dismiss every concern people have about it as "trolling". You're asking people for their hard earned cash, so it's only fair to tell them what it's for. Of course there were some "trolls", some people threatened her and stuff, which is ridiculous. But there were just as many people who want to know where all the money is going to. Up until now, a mere three days before the ending of the project, Susan Wilson still hasn't properly addressed those concerns. According to the budget she proposed, $2,500 is going to a new laptop. But she's getting a free high end laptop from Dell. Also, according to the budget $6,000 is for a week long trip of her and McKenzie to MIT. Six thousand dollars for a week? Really? I think those are legitimate concerns. Also McKenzie is (rather unfortunately) no longer going to that camp she needed $829 for in the first place. So that's another black hole in the budget. Now, I know you are big supporters of the PinkieSquare.com initiative. Well, that site is live already, right now. Without a dime of the budget used for it. So is the money going towards the maintenance of that site? Does she really need $23k for that? Who knows? What will the money be used for? Is it really considered "trolling" nowadays to want to know those things? Seriously? If you put your project out there and ask people to fund it, you should be prepared to answer some serious questions as well. (Of course the threats she got are not something anyone should ever be prepared for. But they are also no excuse not to answer legitimate concerns.)

So please either edit my comment so that it reflects my opinion properly, or just remove it completely.

Thank you,

foobarry81
Then his comment was altogether deleted. That's something. It's still annoying that everywhere this story is announced seemingly noone is allowed to rationally challenge any aspect of it or thoroughly investigate.

And that's before getting into the subject of all the previous attempts of Susan's to make money off crowdfunding, both on kickstarter and indiegogo (these are examples, there are more).

It seems she found the winning recipe: use your kids and cry abuse, sexism, whatever you can think of to attract more money using naive people who honestly believe in causes against such.

Susan's argument is a logical fallacy, as the fact that people back her project doesn't have any relation to the legitimacy of it.

And she even has the nerve to say "Does Kenzie need $829 to make her first RPG? No.". Then why on earth did she make a Kickstarter with $829 as the goal? Or isn't she counting the cost of the camp? Anyway, now that she's getting everything for free, there's no need for it anymore. Why hasn't she canceled it already?

I also love how she blatantly admits that "...supporters backed that dream. They didn't care about the story or what the game was about (which is interesting and important to note b/c they backed this project simply because they wanted to support Mackenzie and that's not something anyone can ever take away from her story)". Doesn't that mean that the game was never the focus of this project? That it was only an excuse to make it seem a little more legit? And isn't that exactly against Kickstarter's guidelines? Quoting from the site: "What is not allowed?

Kickstarter cannot be used to raise money for causes, whether it's the Red Cross or a scholarship, or for 'fund my life' projects, like tuition or bills." Susan just admitted the backers gave her money because of Kenzie, not because of the game. Kickstarter is no charity, that is against the rul... sorry, guidelines.

And playing the victim card can only get her so far. At the end of the day, it was her the one who put her daughter in the spotlight, the one who threw her sons under the bus ("Help my daughter prove her brothers wrong!"; "Girls rule and boys drool!"), and her friend even went the extra mile and directly threatened a backer with revealing his personal information.

I don't recall seeing any comment from anyone with a sane mind attacking her family, despite what she says.

"Empowering the next generation"? Really? Are you sure you're not trying to only improve your wallet like you tried to do many times before, Susan? I would be willing to trust this Kickstarter a bit more if you hadn't made so many shady projects before, absolutely destroying your credibility. So far, I see no reason at all to believe you, not a single one.

You know what? You win, you'll get the money in the end. I don't know how you sleep at night, I wouldn't be able to with such a guilty conscience. If this doesn't turn out to be a scam I'll gladly eat my words, but we both know that's not going to happen, don't we? Shame on you, lady, for doing this to some ignorant (yet well-mean) strangers, and more importantly, to your own family.

I can only hope those $23K are well worth everything you put them through.

That new update also makes me gag. They're really trying to get folks to dump more money, into the Kickstarter, before the end.

4 Days Left: Mackenzie had fun thinking up today's exclusive game-related reward (but there are only 14 available and then they're gone forever). We hope you enjoy adding a piece of YOU to Truth & Trolls as there's certainly no doubt there will be LOTS of interest when THIS game is released. Remember, every person who plays the game will have access to and probably desperately need YOUR...thing. 0=) And of course YOUR'S will be prominently displayed in any post-production PDFs, guides manuals or books.

It's only because we wanted to THANK YOU that we all stood still and got along for 5 minutes (see picture #1). The other pix more real (FYI).

Weapon Master (2 available @ $200/each): Your name/nickname as the name a Powerful Weapon plus an 8 x 10 color print of YOUR POWERFUL WEAPON along with its name and description, hand-signed by Mackenzie and the artist. Also makes a great gift when you choose to name it after someone special. Plus a DRM-FREE copy of the game when it's released.

Armor Master (2 available @ $200/each): Your name/nickname as the name of Powerful Armor plus an 8 x 10 color print of YOUR POWERFUL ARMOR along with its name and description, hand-signed by Mackenzie and the artist. Also makes a great gift when you choose to name it after someone special. Plus a DRM-FREE copy of the game when it's released.

Spell Master (2 available @ $200/each): Your name/nickname is the name of a Powerful Spell plus an 8 x 10 color print of YOUR POWERFUL SPELL along with its name and description, hand-signed by Mackenzie and the artist. Also makes a great gift when you choose to name it after someone special. Plus a DRM-FREE copy of the game when it's released.

Potion Master (2 available @ $200/each): Your name/nickname is the name of a Powerful Potion plus an 8 x 10 color print of YOUR POWERFUL POTION along with its name and description, hand-signed by Mackenzie and the artist. Also makes a great gift when you choose to name it after someone special. Plus a DRM-FREE copy of the game when it's released.

Artifact Master (2 available @ $200/each): Your name/nickname as the name of a Major Artifact plus an 8 x 10 color print of YOUR MAJOR ARTIFACT along with its name and description, hand-signed by Mackenzie and the artist. Also makes a great gift when you choose to name it after someone special. Plus a DRM-FREE copy of the game when it's released.

Ring Master (2 available @ $200/each): Your name/nickname as the name of a Magic Ring plus an 8 x 10 color print of YOUR MAGIC RING along with its name and description, hand-signed by Mackenzie and the artist. Also makes a great gift when you choose to name it after someone special. Plus a DRM-FREE copy of the game when it's released.

Scroll Master (2 available @ $200/each): Your name/nickname as the name of a Magic Scroll plus an 8 x 10 color print of YOUR MAGIC SCROLL along with its name and description, hand-signed by Mackenzie and the artist. Also makes a great gift when you choose to name it after someone special. Plus a DRM-FREE copy of the game when it's released.

NOTE: We'll follow up with you after this campaign ends so you can tell us your ideal vision for whatever it is you name and we'll do our best to make it happen. When this project blew past it's goal, we promised we'd do fun stuff to include and help as many people as possible so we hope you enjoy the special rewards and thank yous during the last few days of this campaign.

Beyond that are two pictures of the family. Lord knows when they're not in front of camera they're probably dancing, because they're going to, even if they go through with this RPG, have way more money than it takes to do that.

EDIT: Brilliant. Just, brilliant.

$20,000 is not much to make a decent game.. most people i've read simply wanted to help Kenzie make a game and see how it turns out.. the average $10 pledge may result in a better game and it seems like they are really trying to do that.

Because $20,000 is always needed for AN RPG MAKER GAME. BY A 9 YEAR OLD. What's a 9 year old need with that kind of cash? Plenty of folks as kids made games with ZERO dollars on their own time because it was fun and they enjoyed it. God, people just make me facepalm. I'd facepalm this morning but I already have a headache. And that was before reading this train wreck.

Nice precedent there KS.

What the hell is Scratch? I noticed it's on a tab on top of the website now. Looks like some random crap thrown on to a page to me.

EDIT: Nevermind, just realized it's that crap JCS was talking about. Though not sure why it deserves its own tab versus another programming language.

Nevermind again. I see it's created by MIT and some other folks. Probably using it to suck up to the MIT guys or something.

LOL, is one of you Alextended?

This is a scam folks.

This person keeps making crowd-funding projects just to get free money and fund her lifestyle.

Proof here:

And no, being against this doesn't mean I don't want to see girls getting into game development.

Don't be crazy hating fools. That is all, bye bye.

Also, I am assuming her "budget", a backers only posting, is still unedited to account for the laptop and all, yes?

I know Susan won't ever come here and read this thread... but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SUSAN! Pay someone to design that website. They fixed the paint over text in places at least, but still looks like a mess. Paint blobs, crumbled paper background (LOL who doesn't remember that texture when making your first website), and all screams of just plain bad.

LOL at the GIF and video below. That GIF, where is it from?

This lady reads like an infomercial. An evil, disturbing and dirty infomercial.
