Is it wrong that I liked 2D, top down Zelda games like Oracle of Seasons to Ocarina of Time (3DS version)?

I just never got into OoT like I did OoS. I feel like having a portable system makes 2D Zelda games more appropriate. I also didn't know what to do half the time in OoT and found the compact world of OoS much more appropriate... It just made more "sense" to me

Nope. That's me. I haven't been able to complete a 3D zelda yet. I've tried again and again, but I can't.

2D top down zelda? I eat that up like popcorn chicken, and then it's gone and I want more chicken.

Or, in this case, 2D top down zelda.

Looks great. What's with all of the complaining about the art style. Looks like ALTTP in glorious 3d to me.

I don't understand why does the overworld look so blurry. It's like there's a smudge filter on the ridges. I wonder if Aonuma's team is actually working on this, it looks like a poor facsimile of ALTTP to me so far.

It's a gif of a video on YouTube, it would look blurry.

Has anyone else been trying to get on the eShop ever since the Nintendo Direct ended? I'm surprised it's taking this long. Usually stuff is up really quickly after these things.

Or maybe it's just people having different opinions and, more importantly, different standards.

Criticism = "hate" now?

I love the Zelda series and, yet, I believe that this game looks bland, cheap and sterile.

I expect so much more from a Zelda game, this just screams low-effort to me.

Yeah, I wasn't calling criticism hate

Maybe the gradient like transition between grass and dirt is giving you that impression.
Game actually looks pretty sharp

Some people don't like ugly-ass 3D of "oh hey it's kinda like a pop-up book if you stare EXACTLY still in one place", there's no need for name-calling, Neiteio
To me, moving the system and breaking the 3D effect for a split second never seemed like any more of a problem than having to blink, really. I mean, it doesn't feel like much of a challenge to hold it in front of me. I guess I adapted well...

I wonder how vital the ability to use the 3d function will be. I legit can't see it due to one of my eyes being fucked up and I'd hate for the game to be unplayable because of it. I mean it looks like it plays just fine to begin with but I have no idea what the eshop vid looks like and it it implies there's stuff I wouldn't be able to see properly.

It looks far better in 2D than 3D based on the eShop video. What you're missing is dumb gimmick stuff stuff like Link flying "out" of the screen when he does those jumps, and the skeleton bones flying "out" of the screen when deflected before falling back down, etc. Pointless distractions which look fine in 2D anyway.

i'm already startin to like the art guys. that didn't take long. maybe the zelda cycle stuff has some grounding. i want this now.

hey we get this before the JPs, haha ;p

Really disappointed by the footage shown of this game. Really disappointed. They are making a Zelda game belonging in 1991, style and gameplay wise, and they're going to charge full price for it.

Why Nintendo? Are you so out of ideas and money that you must re-make the same, tired old concepts in an effort to bleed gamers dry?

I know, don't say it. Inserts picture of Reggie shrugging nonchalantly.

Mario and Luigi is using sprites and is releasing this year.

And I'm loving every bit of it. Never complained about Mario & Luigi series (well, maybe Partners in Time). :D

Nintendo's making more of their franchises 3D (Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, topdown Zelda) so they can use the 3DS's 3D function effectively.

That's one of the reasons why I fucking HATE 3D. Because of it, everything NEEDS to be 3D to be easier to develop the game around the function. That and I just don't really care about 3D (sometimes I don't even like it at all).

I am happy that other people are excited, but...that art direction is awful, imo. I can't hardly stand to look at it.

And when someone posted this:

It only made the difference that much more jarring. Even the colors seems weird. I'm sure it will play great though. I just wish it had made me excited.

But how does it fit into the timeline?!?!

Haha, very good.

You're right, it was a video issue, although I still don't like how it looks.

Says who? Since when did game styles belong in a certain era? What i dont understand is that this is a handheld zelda that usually has a fraction of a console budget. This isn't the next AAA Zelda game.

I am seriously shocked by this thinking. 1991 style of gameplay? What the hell is that and why should it be cheaper because it was pulled off in the 90s.
What the hell?

I dont know what else to say either tbh

The colors are different, not weird.

Can someone post some Four Swords Adventure screens please?

*Keeps looking at the same blurry pictures and complaining*
*Ignores newer direct feed pictures which aren't blurry and show the colors correctly*

I'm not sure what to say...

The original game looks miles better.

Also, ALttP feels like most Zelda games released before or after, a new game in the quirky vein of Link's Awakening would have made more sense in my opinion

Hardly. I'm not looking for an echo chamber, just a reprieve from the endless negativity that's permeated into every aspect of gaming-gaf.

But I don't think there is endless negativity. This game is divisive - a handheld sequel/remake to LTTP was always going to be - but to me it seems there's no shortage of people sticking up for the game. You say you don't want an echo chamber, but you appear to want exactly that: more people echoing your excitement and positivity for the game in this thread.

Ultimately, I don't think this was a very good announcement from Nintendo. It's not clear whether this is some sort of remake of LTTP, a sequel, a 're-imagining' or a mixture of all three. Is this going to be another attempt to introduce casual gamers to the Zelda series, or is it for long-time fans? From what little they've said if it, it seems to want to be all things to all people which, assuming it's not just meaningless marketing speak, is a very dangerous route to take!

Something about the saturated grass in the overworld weirds me out a little. Think it feels more like a GBA palette from Minish Cap/Four Swords than the SNES game.

Looks nice, though. Wonder if Hyrule retains the same layout - or if it's in Hyrule at all. Also great to see brown-sleeved Link again other so many years.

Very nice. A sequel of the best zelda game ever is always good.
However i do still hope that another zelda game in development.

That area was indeed from the original overworld (light world).

Here's a comparison:

Looks like they added more bushes this time around.

Outside the entrance to Death Mountain:

The changed the big rock into 2 "8 rocks"

Cancels preorder.

The other area shown in the eShop trailer is near the Bumpkin house just above that. The magic tree grew back and there are some extra tree stumps/stumps moved.

OK I'm hyped!

Although I would've preferred a more 2D hand drawn look. Ever since I saw the Zelda level in SM3DL and heard Miyamoto's comments about wanting to remake LttP I've assumed we'd get a top down Zelda that looks similar to this. So I've mentally prepared myself for this "New" style.

No one's sad that 2D graphic are simply dead (outside of indie games)? =(
I do miss hand drawn art but I understand why they don't go 2D anymore.

It's easier, quicker, cheaper, cleaner and animates more smoothly.

Still not the same thing though I agree, but that's business for you.

I would have liked the colors to be a little more contrast of each other. I feel like the "Dark Outline" centric style is what made the original so memorable and stand the test of time.
