The Evil Within (PS3/360/PC/NextGen, idtech5, Tango/Bethesda, 2014): [Up: New Info]

This varies quite liberally honestly. Many directors get shot down or even flat-out ignored by their team. I don't think Mikami is one of those, though. His team are pretty dedicated to him, to the point where they left CAPCOM to follow him.
I find that hard to believe. Just like in movie making there has to be someone who is overlooking the creative progress, giving direction and advice and deciding what is to be used and what not. It would not be possible to make a game otherwise. There just has to be one or two people on the top to say like "Ok, this is where we have to go." Otherwise the whole process would be a mess. When you have 100 artists working on something you won't get everyone to agree on everything.

I don't know if you've seen it, but your comments provoked a very negative reaction from JP of Platinum in the thread leading up to this one.

I noticed, and JP took more issue with the implication that Mikami probably wasn't that involved in God Hand and Vanquish, something which was said to me and I wrote without fact-checking (and admitted I was incorrect months ago and again today, but some people dredged it up and sent it to him).

It really depends on the project, I've heard stories of both.

eh... seems like I've been through this sort of experience before already. I'll probably play through it because a new survival horror IP (even if it does clearly show its influences/tropes) is something that I'd like to support, assuming it's a good game.

Between the announcements of The Evil Within and Zelda 3DS, and my ongoing addiction to BioShock Infinite (finally subsiding somewhat, with the conclusion of my second playthrough), I'm feeling a tad overwhelmed as a gamer! It's hard to process this much awesome at once.

A little bit off topic, but does anyone find that horror games are great to play with friends? so many of my friends all love sitting in while I play a good horrible game, and he/she usually gets really in to the story and loves the scares.

It's almost like watching a movie with friends, and I just know that they'll love this when I show them the teaser.
Yep it's how I played Silent Hill in college with my friend Suzanne with me, watching and giving advice. It was a lot of fun, made the whole experience more memorable.

Hey just a reminder that according to news Miakami isn't the director but rather a young woman who is a protege of his.
And which news would that be? Every news so far name Mikami as director. There is even an interview with him in which he states that he didn't want to direct the game but decided to do it anyway because he thinks that the companies first project has to be directed by him persoanlly.

The game looks like a great technical showcase, but I feel like I've played this before. I hope it brings more than better graphics to the genre.

Yep, it's really good, enhances the experience imo. But it can also ruin it if someone doesn't want people to know they're scared, to they start cracking jokes about everything to hide it and it ruins everything. That's why I hate most "Let's Play"s with horror games, they start cracking jokes and cursing about everything because they don't want to be scared in front of a camera, for some reason people don't think it's ok to be scared.

Still hoping a gameplay trailer comes soon enough. Keeping Air II as the song however would be nice. Also is it just me or does cube head seem like hell be a equivalent to a chase type enemy like we saw with nemesis?

With all that said I'm hyped.

I read that there's going to be gameplay articles dropping next Monday, so it's not far off. I'm in the same boat as you - I'm really eager to see how this game plays.

And how scary it is.

There is but like i said in another thread, there seems to be an stigma with calling yourself a director or auteur in the gaming industry. Just look David Cage and how much some people dislike him for attempting to put his name out there and making a different type of game or Jonathan Blow where people make fun of him for trying to make something more meaningful. I believe we have always had these people who were the directors or auteurs but they are never noticed in the game industry or they rarely are. I prefer to know who directed a game rather than the development team. Look at Naughty Dog, 3 Uncharted games Directed and written by Mrs. Amy Hennig but people put Naughty Dog at the front. The majority of people don't even know who she is. But imagine something could happen and Naughty Dog is sold tomorrow key people fired and they still be Naughty Dog. But Amy Hennig is always Amy Hennig. The same goes for Jonathan Blow or Ken Levine. If they were gone it would be a completely different game because those people have a clear vision of what they want with their games. Naughty Dog is now making The Last Of Us and is another completely different game from The Uncharted series but people still assume its only Naughty Dog.

You also have this apprentice director, Ikumi Nakamura, who you are grooming for future success.

Oh yes, our future director. My game style and hers are completely different, but she's extremely talented, so I want her to make her own original games. She understands the modern era of games and she can see what's coming next, so I think she can create something for the future. She's also crazier than I am.

Dunno, I thought he meant she'll direct the games after Zwei?

The screenshot's from The War Z.

...Holy shit, hahahaha.

The hell..?!

edit: Then again, kinda makes sense, as we've seen the zombie like enemies in the game and they do NOT look like those in all other screenshots/art.

I've already wiped the concept art from my memory. I'm saying this for the second time, but I really dislike it when people mix up concept art and screenshots.

Hmm, that Reddit find is interesting. Is it common in the game development process to cop existing images (such as that War Z screen) and incorporate it into art when you're trying to create a "target" for the game's art team? In this case, it appears they borrowed the screen to illustrate the sort of crowd control situations that will occur.

At any rate, I'm glad to see they apparently retained the "Safe-head" design, as indicated by his appearance in the live-action trailer. It's an instantly iconic monster that I look forward to stalking us!

Well it is kind've amusing that they took something from a game that was already a rip-off. I don't think anyone takes it seriously.

Well the Last of Us is being directed by the Uncharted 2 director so...
It's TeamA Naughty Dog

Note* Naughty Dog has two teams so its safe to assume and public knowledge that it's all Naughty Dog

Next thing you know, that IGN logo in the bottom right is actually also part of the actual concept art and not a watermark :-D

Okami

Hopefully this won't get any co-op bullshit...

no but you can purchase $.99 blood transfusions in the in game store to replenish your life if you get hit or a $2.99 "Lucky Draw Pack" that has a random item to either heal you, buff with adrenalin or infect you with a panic attack.

Agreed. Horror games, or most games not entirely centered around combat or dealing with systems (I'm thinking of simulation games like Civ or SimCity), are great to watch someone play. The entertainment comes from the atmosphere and tension, not the act of resolving a combat situation or designing/managing something.

This is just life. Can you tell me the name of the cinematographer on Life of Pi or Inception without googling? Or the individuals who helped animate Akira?

For decades society has had an obsession with putting a face on something, and in all forms of visual/interactive entertainment that's the director, i.e. the leader of the operation.

I mostly just expect an enthusiast forum to know how game development works and large-scale productions like this type is rarely dependent on auteur-like principles. Yes, there's general direction and decisions by one or a couple of persons, but the actual execution is accomplished by several individuals.

It's fine that uninvited / exoteric people have to put a face on everything, I just expect a place like GAF with lots of people familiar with game development to refrain from lavishly praising one guy for something as complex as what we see in this game.

No, its being directed and written by Neil Druckmann. Uncharted 2 creative director and writer was Amy Hennig.

Bruce Straley directed Uncharted 2
And is the director for the Last of Us

Neil Druckman is the creative director for Last of Us... They have both been seen together giving interviews about the game so no argument there.

I'm getting the following vibe:

- REmake
- RE4
- Siren: Blood Curse
- Eternal Darkness
- Shadows of the Damned
- Cabin in the Woods
- Se7en
- SAW

Thrown in a blender. A strainer used to filter out the Suda.

I hope this turns out to be the case!

Creative Director is the main force and what is akin to Director. And Amy Hennig was the creative director of Uncharted 2.
