Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen |OT| deep down darkness

is this even a bit similar to dark souls but easier?
Taken literally, yes. But "a bit" is pretty loose, it's more of an open world RPG that takes combat more akin to something like other open world RPGs like Bethesda's (smaller world though I believe) with combat that's more DMC than Dark Souls's more Zelda OoT-esque combat. Their strongest link really is that that more western-styled RPGs from Japanese developers, though I'd say this is more western-styled than Dark Souls despite that Jrock opening.

Can't wait to go in on this. Still need to pre-order off Amazon but I need funds to do so ;_; Really looking to sink in a lot more hours for this.

Can't remember if it has been said or not, but are there new skills for the vocations?

Just started playing the original last week and I'm having a blast, this should be dropping right when I'm done with the base game. Just spent 500,000+ gold to buy all the "Swordsman" armor and
Guts'
sword :p

Yes, every vocation get's another "level" of skills.

“•Dark Arisen provides each character class with a new higher tier of skills, giving players new devastating abilities and magicks to master
•Includes over 100 pieces of new high level weapons and armor for players venturing into the underground caverns
•14 all new passive skills give players new ways to customize their character’s abilities
•All new tiers of equipment enhancement allow players to forge the mightiest weapons and armor
•Brand new character customization options give you even more ways to design and customize the look of your hero.”

Cool. Cool cool cool. Thanks!

Really looking forward to this... just the decision of what to play as... Been running as a Mystic Knight I think in my current file of NG+, but I might just go back to Ranger if I like the abilities enough. Ranger was by far one of my favorite vocations my first run through.

I played this all the way through on xbox 360 last year. Since then I've traded my 360 in and I'm now all about PS3. So I'll be starting all over, which I'm happy to do. I love the game.

That said, I'm curious how much new there is for non-high level characters. Will we see any new items or anything new at all in the low and mid levels?

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
I rented the PS3 version and became fascinated with it, but it just ran so poorly even with that ridiculous letterboxing. Can't buy this unless I know they've done something to improve things.

Gat damn I can't wait for Tuesday.

My original strategy was to start a new character in vanilla DD a week ago and get him up to lv.50 so I could start DA right away, but I think I might restart the entire game so I can appreciate the new texture packs and enemy encounters in the base game.

Now, which class?
  • Assassin: I've never done an assassin playthrough. I like their moveset and weapon variety, and no class is better at Ur-hunting. That said, every time I've beaten this game I've done it with a "rogue"-family class. Maybe I should mix it up a bit?
  • Mystic Knight: I've dabbled in being a Mystic Knight before. I appreciate the variety of skills they have, but I feel like only a select few of them are actually useful. I'll be playing on Hard so it'll be nice to have some heavy armor and a shield to hide behind. I realize how powerful they are, but their best skills aren't very fun to use. I really like the idea of this class, though. I wish they could carry a staff in place of a shield. Then they'd be perfect.
  • Sorcerer: Usually I choose sorcerer for a pawn or level up my arisen as a sorcerer just so I can unlock their augments, but there's definitely a strong appeal to wrecking the battlefield with magic. I feel magic-users have the greatest variety of skills that are actually useful, including a few helpful support spells. My worry about playing as a sorcerer is that I fear DD's greatest strength (it's combat) doesn't shine through as much as if I were using a melee class.

Decisions, decisions...

YES! I loved Dragon's Dogma (got all the achievements except Well Equipped) and can't wait to play it again, this time using a Mystic Knight (my previous char was a Magic archer).

For someone who likes more chances to pop up/juggle and parry enemies which would be the best class and pawn class to enhance those abilities?

I have it preordered at Amazon. 17 pounds is quite a steal. Never played the original, so can't wait to jump into the game after so much praise for the game from GAF.

anyone heard if they fixed the screen tearing on 360 version?

with the original, I preferred the PS3 one thanks to the screen tearing on the 360 so I would think that would be preferable also with this expansion.

I'm about 5-6 hours in to Vanilla DD. I'm playing a mage, but really not digging how limited my options are. I'm thinking of switching to a magic archer since they look so fucking dope.

I really like blowing shit up, though. How good are mages end game?

Pawns should be Mages, not you. Be a Sorcerer instead.

Basically, Mages are a support class, Sorcerers blow shit up wiith really cool and powerful spells.

I just switched to sorcerer. Sorry, I forgot there were two types. :p

How difficult is it to level up another job after playing the game for a bit?

It's easy. Just keep playing. I'd level them all up so you have all the support skills.

And let's be real here, you haven't lived until you've played a max level Ranger.

My god I finally stayed at an inn and got my pawn's status back after having not played since I finished shortly after release. Almost 400,000 RC and a slab of copper.

Awesome.

I'm a level 47 Assassin that went back and did the fighter class for the augments - took maybe 2 hours to hit level 6 fighter before I stopped. I'm doing both the warrior and the fighter classes for the strength augments before switching back to my Assassin for the rest of the game. I figure it'll take me a total of about 7 hours to max both of the other classes. Not that long by RPG standards IMO.

I'm really interested in trying Dragon's Dogma out, so I'll probably grab this despite the fact I don't need anymore games to play... How much gameplay time can I expect?

Just finished vanilla DD. A few more trophies and I'll be ready for DA. Can't wait!

I hate that 350 weapons/armour trophy. I'm low on cash and I'm at like 250 or something

Same thing for those 50 notice board quests, I don't really like doing notice board quests.

Kinda disappointed this expansion probably won't have trophies though... I know trophies/achievements are considered an extra, but I like having new trophies when I play DLC/expansions.

OP doesn't mention this, but there's a lengthy demo of vanilla Dragon's Dogma on PSN Store/XBL [it's 3600 mb].

In case you want to see if the game is up your alley before buying it.

I've decided to roll a Sorcerer. We'll see how my stamina management handles on hard mode. I might have to level up as a ranger for a few levels at first.

Will be picking this up on Tuesday for sure. I always wanted to pick up the original, but just never got around to it. Are there any performance improvements compared the base game?

Dragon's Dogma is a spiritual sequel to the old Capcom Dungeons & Dragons beat 'em up coin-op games.

Much more of an action game than Dark Souls.

Yea a lot of the unreleased concepts for Dragon's Dogma was shown at GDC this year. Looked very much like the D&D arcade games. Can't wait to try this out~

God's had his chance.
wish i had a proper gif to post my pleasure at this ish ...

Decided to stop at lvl 191 so I could actually tick some exp away inside of Bitterblack... then maybe think about starting a new game with my wife's account.

Incredibly hyped at this moment. seriously been waiting for this bad boy for way too long ... so much more gear to gets!! :)

First thing i'm doing is upgrading my Carnation/Fey Whisper/Ascalon combo... then imma go dead zombie shopping for a new helm that is anywhere near as cool as the Grisly helm.

Yay! See all ya'll pawns out there! If you want a powerful high 180s pawn to help you through the game add me on the PSN: Silkysm00th - i'll friend you up and you can take Vimes and her rather perfect bust out for a spin!! :)

edit: Hey Nemesis!! - I was wondering if you had a chance to look at any of these tier 3 spells/skills/abilites? Do they look like natural progressions of the base skills or are there some serious leaps? i.e. The Maelstrom spell now has lighting shooting out of it or some such insanity instead of just lasting a little longer and being a little bigger... that type of thing.
