What I find funny is Iwata is taking charge at NOA cos they clearly can't handle shit themselves and is thinking "hold on
Fellas, I know what's what! I got dis shit on lockdown" as if he knows what to do to fix NOA....newsflash....you are the problem!

Resign if you love Nintendo but he clearly loves his Internet fame more!

Interesting. Maybe Project Rainfall is Tatsumi Kimishima's fault. Maybe this is a lack of a verbal and internet communicative CEO.

Did anyone here - other than shikamaru ninja - know who Tatsumi Kimishima was before this announcement?

i'm hoping this means they're going to try and rebuild the american side of things that's gone missing over the last decade. it might help explain the problems with shipping recently if there was a major shakeup behind the scenes. transitions aren't fun.
You expect them to rebuild the American side of things by "promoting" the guy who has fucked up the American side of things for a decade? HD is a fad, no one cares about online gaming, mature titles aren't important..now this guy is in charge of the US? Good luck with that. I'm sure EA and other western third parties are thrilled...

It's not about one title selling units, though I agree with you Pikmin 3 likely wouldn't be a huge console seller. However, they need to build the library and diversify the library. They have to, so the more core titles from Nintendo, the more units they'll sell and maybe get some third parties on board again (though it might be too late at this point).

Mario Kart was widely successful on the Wii so I'm guessing they think it'll make a large impact on Wii U. Though NSMBWii was too but the Wii U version didn't do enough to keep sales going.

We'll see how that game looks visually, because I'm sure the mechanics will remain largely the same - possibly with a new gimmick (rear view mirror on Gamepad?). If the graphics are merely Mario Kart Wii in higher resolution, it's gonna be the same story as NSMBU. If Nintendo wants people to plop down 300-350 bones on their new console, they need to start making us say "wow" again.

Surprised people are throwing Reggie under the bus. Is there really any reason to think Wii U's "failure" has more to do with NA's corporate leadership than it does upper management in Japan?

I love Iwata, but more as an affable figurehead than an actual "get things done" CEO. Nintendo has been indefensibly slow to adapt to online gaming and distribution, unable to incorporate core, up-to-date graphical technologies, embarrassingly behind in interface design and optimization, and their management of staggered Wii U game releases has been an abysmal failure.

If management outside Japan has any blame to shoulder, then it's probably that they didn't speak up to their superiors and say "look, these are things gamers are demanding and they need to be there if we want to compete in the larger market."

Irate is power hungry and incompetent.

His personal vanity and quest for miyamotoesque Internet fame and glory is killing Nintendo.

They need to sack this bafoon not give him more power. Nintendo need to decentralise power not what they have been doing.

Iwata's idea of management is less innovation and more micro management of staff and subsidiaries. He's stifling nintnedos innovation.

That rot started to sink in when he took on more roles and responsibilities and will only continue now that he is now running the show in America.

He is barely running Japan right now.

Nintendo is doomed.

So happy you're back!

This is a TERRIBLE thing.

So, basically, Nintendo took someone who has demonstrated that they know next to nothing about the western market, what is trending here, what type of games we want, and how we want those games to be marketed to us....and replaced him with someone who has demonstrated, time and time again, that they know even LESS about those things?

I can't.

I just...can't.

The situation in Japan was the same, before he proved himself in 2005, the ideas behind the DS were not popular, and many people said Iwata was out of touch or didn't know anything about the market. And yet, why did he succeed?

Simple, the definition of what the Japanese market was, changed. One simply has to find the right strategy, and boldly seek it out. If you're right, eventually you'll succeed, even if the market you're envisioning doesn't exist yet.

It's actually America's responsibility to follow Iwata's way of thinking and not the other way round.

LOL - as if NOA hasn't been doing that already. We see how swimmingly its been going for them.

The problems are at the top. Reggie may have been shit, but it's not like he had much more than shit to work with. And now we have someone with no fucking clue how the American market works in even more direct control than he already was.

Absolutely laughable.

Part of me is happy that now, when Nintendo fails again (and they will fail again), there will be nobody to blame but Iwata himself. But another part of me is sad that it's going to have to even get to that point. Nintendo is treating the symptom and not the cause here.

So, regardless of his fuck ups now, he made some great decisions damn near a decade ago!

This, why would anyone be happy about this?

Nintendo is shitting the bed at the moment in the west because they are not able to adapt quickly enough to change and I would say identify with the culture here.

So instead of hiring someone who could help them out (who Iwata could supersede any decisions he didn't like anyways) they do this?

I'll be amazed if this company is here in 10 years from now. There is only so many times you can resell the games from your glory years

I think the graphics will look fine, as I don't think they'll take a NSMBU approach. However, I'm fully expecting the game to expand social features more. I think that game might end up having some unique Miiverse features as well as some nifty GamePad features.

I think it would be kind of weird to announce a whole new game, right? We just had a ND and E3 is coming up. Maybe they'll talk about WiiU and 3DS connectivity or something.

Or maybe they will reveal Retro's title to be like "See we got stuff for Western audiences."

I don't even know what I'm saying anymore things are so crazy with Nintendo right now.

True story: one time with a disappointing earnings report they announced a whole new console. Who knows what they have in store for tomorrow? It could be anything at all.

He made some great decisions at HAL also.

Recently, Iwata was playing to the game developers. Giving them a lot of freedom and time. Now that they're in crisis mode, things will likely go back to normal in terms of seeking Blue Oceans and disruptive technologies.

I don't get why people are so mad over this. if this helps the US get support similar to what Nintendo gives out in Japan its better than what we are getting now and if things don't work out Iwata will be gone regardless.

Yes, the social features could add alot to the experience. Still waiting for that camera functionality to be unlocked. Has it been used in any game other than Octopus? (that shit is great btw haha)

Speaking of which, has anyone tried the Wii U video chat feature? I keep forgetting it exists.

Q&A Preview:

Q: Nintendo failed to make a profit for the second year in a row. What's the deal?

A: Please Understand. We're making mario and mario kart.

End.

Why would he take on more responsibilities when he can't even take care of business in their homeland?

Mind-boggling.

I have been willing to try, even ask someone from GAF, but I would feel odd I guess, so I need a close person to get this so that I could try.

It's an interesting question, I didn't know about Kimishima until now, he seems to be very behind the scene person.

Hush your noise before Iwata defence force flame you!

On a related note, no one ever answers the same question that comes up all the time. Just what is iwata's qualifications at running a billion dollar megacorp multi national?

He ran HAL in the 80s and 90s? That was basically a bedroom coding company more or less with only one simple platformer series to their name?

From memory, HAL tried to go 3rd party once and failed miserably on the mega drive?

Maybe that's where Iwata got his hate for third parties from? They were more successful than him?

You do realize that this is exactly what they did with the Wii U, right?

And it was this precise strategy, overused, that resulted in the unprecedented DISASTER they now find themselves in with the Wii U...right?

lol so many business experts in here.

every nintendo home console has always been region locked since the famicom.
And if the world make a progress they deny it?
Anyway big problem is 3ds. Handheld Nintendo used to be region free or am I forgetting things?

It's an interesting question, I didn't know about Kimishima until now, he seems to be very behind the scene person.

Most definitely. Although he was Reggie's direct boss and was the guy making a lot of decisions, the simple fact that Kimishima never publicly presented or conducted any interviews made him virtually anonymous.

Nintendo's making me pretty happy these days.

Really? You love paying to 'upgrade' ROMs to play them again on an over-priced underpowered underselling device that barely competes with devices released 7 years ago?

You like the complete lack of interesting new IPs instead of iterating on the same 3 franchises ad infinitum?

You're happy with business shakeups because of low sales and everyone running around like their head is cut off because they don't have a consensus of why the Wii U is selling worse than the GameCube?

You're happy with how they tease you with Earthbound, but won't launch with it?

There's nothing you'd change at all? You're happy with the direction the company has gone?

Not handhelds.

Old Nintendo understood that handhelds are not the same.

Iwata doesn't have the same foresight and experience of the old guard to understand this.

I think you need to research a little more before pulling that IP line, we just got a new IP from Nintendo last month.

Me too, especially this move. The reaction is delicious.

Doesn't anybody think this is Iwata's way of making sure he's fully responsible for any success or failings over the next financial year? If his comments are to be believed, he's willing to fall on his sword if he doesn't turn things around,s o this gives him the best possible chance.
