Indie Games [April] Now Voting - Post 635!

Sorry I haven't had my votes in yet Toma, haven't had a lot of time for games lately and indies have slipped off the radar for me momentarily (save for Kairo which I was able to spend some time with before I headed out for the weekend). I've got a few things that need working on still but if I get enough time I'll try to bumrush some stuff and get votes in. Sorry Indie thread, I still love you!

I also rediscovered my love of Lasercat. Needs a mention next month, its fantastic!

Did I mention Unepic is good?

No you havent yet. Is it a good game?

Also: feel free to pop in here whenever you want to write more about Lasercat. Next months thread is probably done by now with the fantabulous number of 42 games in each category, but I'll make sure to include it in june then.

unfortunately I haven't played any games... being broke sucks...

There are lots of free demos and free games in the voting list though. It wasnt that much free games this month (lots of them next month), but there were a few. The Unepic demo is seriously worth a look. Atum is free. Reprisal is fantastic and free. Just to name a few.

Yeah, just like Toma wrote. Three games from my list are free and one I bought fo $1.

Pretty funky, I thought the OP would be clear enough about free stuff. That was also the reason why I always mention the free demos, which are in most cases more than enough to judge these games.

Trucker Sexologist
Bro Force and Clairvoyance get my vote. I haven't really played anything else on the list. Clairvoyance in particular seems to be a great fit for my brief, sporadic gaming sessions. Unlike most games, I feel like I can still get a lot of value out of Clairvoyance under those conditions. It's one of the most elegant and rewarding strategy games I've ever played.

Bro Force riffs on the same hyper-kinetic, high lethality gameplay thread that Hotline Miami did, albeit in a less focused way. The multiplayer mode has a lot of potential for hilarious mayhem.

Cart Life
Marvin's Mittens
Qasir Al-Wasat
Waking Mars

Toma, thanks for the heads up. I'll vote for the four of these, I've found them all excellent to varying degrees and well worth playing. I want to play Unepic for sure, I could have sworn I bought it in a bundle a while back but I guess not.

LIT - Wow, I'm not a big fan of a pixel art, but this looks incredible.

As for the style of gameplay, i'm aiming for a flavor platforming along the lines of Abe's Exodus with the requirement of some classic SCUMM styled thinking. Lots of emphasis on exploration and problem solving rather than actually traversing platforms or killing and junk. Oddworld is sort of my bible in terms of game development.

Can we... agree on you throwing that in the next thread again? The next thread has 42 games in each category. Its too beautiful to ruin the number :p

Ok, no more games this month.

Yeah, I am also a bit glad that I finished the games part so far. Still need to finish the tallying/write up of the winners. So I wouldnt mind not needing to care about the games anymore ;)

Everyone who posts games in this thread, thank you. There's so many interesting games here and in past threads I still plan to one day catch up on. I'm not much of a vocal poster but I had to give this thread my thanks and curses in equal measure. Y'know, Dishonored and Xcom were my two most anticpated games of last year, I have owned them for months and have still not played them....neck deep in La Mulana and Virtue Last Reward right now. And these threads keep piling on more indie games I want!

I've been thinking what you gonna do with your perfect 42, if some of the games from future's list become available:p

Digging through the #Screenshotsaturday I've found games planned for 2015, so it's piling up nicely.

forgot about the second post

I'll try atum

don't really have the time to play a billion free games in two days :p

You know, guys... About that 42 number. I just noticed that next month is also towel day ( google it). What are the odds! No way I can change the numbers :p

Fuck, I just saw what Orihaus (Cesure, AEON) has created in 2 days for LD48, but I promised I won't post any new game.

Bro Force: Amazing game! Wasn't expecting much when I started playing, but ended having a lot of fun. You being able to destroy the scenary was a nice touch. If I needed to resume the game in one word it could be: YEAH!

Freedom Plante: When I read about this game I thought it was just a Sonic rip-off, there are a lot of things from Sonic but the game try to innovate incorporating new movements. I really enjoyed the levfel designs.

Intrusion 2: I got a feel of Contra while paying this game, also the scenarios kinda remind me of Strider for PSX.

Atum: Loved the concept, really interesting. Took me some time to figure how the mechanics worked but it was totally worth the time.

Unepic: This game really is what Toma advertised! Loved the intro and all the references so far, this game caught my attention. Everyone should play it.

So after a slightly hectic month with friends trying left and right to introduce me to a few AAA titles I've since quickly gotten over, I've got my completely incomplete voting list.

Top 5:
Darkout
This got a decent update during the month since my impression of it and I have since gotten past the glitch I was having issues with. The new release seems much more stable as well.
Driftmoon
This caught me a little by surprise, and was quite the decent and capable RPG from the bit I played of the demo. It definitely seems worthy of mentioning, and trying to get more people to try it out.
Legends of Aethereus
I can't help but promote this game, after playing it a fair bit prior to this month, and now during their MP beta, I can say that this game has a lot of potential to be a very good ARPG. I'd really like to see this grow with a decent community around it.
Unepic
Caught me by surprise, I'd been eyeing it previously on desura and decided to try it out. Definitely worthwhile and I will be investing in a copy of it as soon as I get a chance.
Waking Mars
Love the lack of combat in this game. Just exploring caverns and trying to discover as much as you can about the lifeforms surrounding you.

Honourable Mentions:
Intrusion 2 - Loved playing this game, unfortunately it's not quite as high on my list as the other games.
Atum - One of the best new concepts I've seen in a while, a game within a game where the objects interact between the games, took me a bit to get used to, but I didn't really end up entranced, so I can't really leave it in my top 5.

Unfortunately I didn't have the chance to play many more than this, hopefully that chance will come at some point though.

Thank you, Toma, for keeping the thread active. This was a tough month to narrow down and my time has been limited, but here are my top 5. Unfortunately I feel it's a bit skewed toward action titles, but once again it's due to me being in crunch mode for most of 2013.

Teleglitch - I've recently become fascinated with anything procedurally-generated, and Teleglitch adds great combat and atmosphere on top of that.

Cook, Serve, Delicious - I love everything about this game, and one of the few to make me laugh.

BroForce - Lots of great mini-experiences to be found here, and plays great.

Freedom Planet - I always liked the artwork but originally dismissed it as a Sonic clone. The demo showed off a lot of interesting new mechanics and was a joy overall.

Intrusion 2 - Modern contra without being 'modernized', if that makes sense. Rad game.

I can't get into Broforce, even though I should like it. I've play it's inspiration, titled Infinite SWAT. Loved that, but here I can't seem to put why I don't like it. It adds a lot in comparison, but for whatever reason I don't like it so far.

Thanks to everyone voting! The voting list looks way, WAY better now. I really appreciate that you guys put in the effort after I bugged you about it :)

Just came by to apologize for not voting. I haven't really played much in the indie world this month. I've either been too busy with my own projects, or winding down with Luigi's Mansion or something. Maybe next month!

No need to apologize! I figured there were a few that wanted to get around to vote and forgot, so I wrote some reminder PMs. I definitely didnt expect everyone to vote ;)
Next month is looking fantastic btw.Los of smaller games that will catch people by surprise. Oh and its really nice to see more people checked out Unepic, and agreeing with me that it totally deserves the shoutout.

It's in the next thread.

Understood, thanks. So, can I still vote? It'll be slim pickings for me I'm afraid, but I'll do anything I can to contribute to the tally.

Eh, let's go anyway. I've only played these five:

Triad
Waking Mars
Marvin's Mittens
Darkout
Clairvoyance
----

Need to check out Unepic and Door Kickers. They both look awesome.

Feel free to check out Unepic and Door Kickers today or tomorrow and change your list accordingly. I will finish the tally in about 30 hours. And you dont need to have a full 5 title list if you didnt like all of the 5 titles you played this month.

Votes! Sorry, I've only played three of those listed this month, and even then one of them only briefly (Darkout)... but I think all are quite polished, and have something to offer. So, anyway:

Waking Mars
Wooden Sen'SeY
Darkout

Thanks again for the great thread, Toma, and to everyone for their posts - much appreciated.

Glad to see more people voting. :)

LIT - Wow, I'm not a big fan of a pixel art, but this looks incredible.

It looks really awesome, and I DO love pixel art. :D Great find!

Seeing it on Noogy's list reminded me I really need to try Teleglitch when I have some time.

That must be it. I bought and 100%'d the game because I don't like "art games". It's an opinion, not sure why it can't be valid that I just don't like -->KAIRO<-- on its own merits.
Sorry if I came across as aggressive.  I didn't imply that you were defending the game, though--just writing off my opinion because I may not like artsy games.

Nobody was writing off your opinion or saying it's any less valid. Not liking artsy games does not make one's opinion invalid (I actively dislike them in fact, I'm sick of pretentious interactive movies).

Edit: Below - Hey Toma! No need to get all passive-aggressive. There are plenty of puzzles in Kairo and the games have major overlap in the same genres. Perhaps you should play it after all.

Mmmm, you might want to stop projecting aggresiveness, derisiveness and sarcasm in others' words, because there was zero in Toma's post. We are a close-knit community in this thread and Toma is one of the most courteous posters you'll find, you won't find any attacks by him on anyone.

Ummm... what?

Shhhh, we already cleared that issue! Everything is fine and we battled it out in the Steam chat :D (Actually he was being super generous and gifted Kairo to me so I can finally check it out myself after he noticed that I wasnt mocking him and was actually being serious about thinking it was "just" an art game.)

It was just a bad day and some misunderstandings here and there. Internet miscommunication! I'd actually appreciate if you deleted that post, since we already cleared up the misunderstanding and Xelios doesnt deserve to get more on the head for it ;p

Thanks for jumping in though ;)

Nice, now try it with ''e''.

And don't use any punctuation Faulkner style or get rid of nouns - we gonna create art thread for the next month.

I will try, but that is fairly tricky. I shall look into how I might go about that and will inform you as soon as I thought of a way to do so. Do you want a PM or should I should I put it in a post? I don't want you to miss it of course, if I think of a smart solution.

Although, you probably shouldn't put too much trust in my ability of doing so. At one point, I might have a mood for doing it, but I am actually still working and I am a bit worn out right now.

Where is this new thread? I am eager to see the list of games.

Voting is still going on until tomorrow. I'll put it up in about 24 hours. List is looking mighty good, if I am allowed to say so :)

Seeing it on Noogy's list reminded me I really need to try Teleglitch when I have some time.

I think the buzz around Teleglitch (or at least when I heard about it) came at a bad time, and the game was overlooked, which is a real shame since it does some really interesting things. I know it's a tired word, but the game does a great job feeling visceral in combat. That and few games attempt the chunky polygonal look of post-Doom PC or early-Playstation games, which I love.

I finally played the demo of Unepic. The game generally seems like it should be right up my alley, but everything about the setup and dialogue turned me off. It's a shame it's so needlessly vulgar, because the actual game seems sort of neat. I'll give it another try sometime.

It's worth pushing through. I found most of the 'comedy' in that game to be agonizingly unfunny and the menus are a little lacking. But after a few hours the quality of the gameplay shines through all its flaws. The use of light to signify explored and unexplored areas is a highlight for me.

Getting ready for baby has sucked all my time and money away, as such, I only played two games on the list. Clairvoyance and Cart Life.

So I'm only putting in one vote

Clarivoyance

Really excellent robo battling strategy. The requirement to plan 5 moves turns fairly conventional rules into something really deep. Once you start seeing how robots stack, move, and watch how a round can turn into something VERY different based on a couple moves, you'll love it imediately.

Honsetly, I can't recomend Cart Life at this point. It feels like it should be brilliant, but I had 3 crash bugs, and one freeze bug in 30 minutes of playing it. Needs a bit more bug squashing. :(

Noooo, just noticed that next months games post is 800 chracters too long. >_> Now how can I shorten that.

I run into this problem all the time doing the GOTY threads.

One thing to remember is that if you are using an imagehost, do whatever you can to make your image embed codes as small as possible. Sometimes they use your image filename and you've made it too long or descriptive. For instance, instead of "uncharted2.jpg" i changed mine to "uc2.jpg". If you have a lot of images that ends up saving a lot of space.

After that I just do a pass through the text and revise it down to be more concise. People generally use too many words to communicate ideas, you can do a lot to cut that down.

I'll give it another go soon, because I see greatness in it. From the disarming attitudes of the characters, to the conversations with the daughter. It's a sim that exists with good writing, and mechanics that reverberate emotionally.

Crash bugs just frustrate the hell out of me though, played for half an hour and i couldn't even get the cart.

Only going to Vote for the ones I really liked

1) Teleglitch

Awesome Roguelike. I actually bought the game after playing the demo. As noogy said, this game really gives a visual feel to the chaos of fighting (Kinda reminds me of hotline in that regards)

2) Freedom Planet

I really dislike the design of this game, but hell if this is not everything Sonic has been trying to capture since Sonic & knuckles, then I don't know what Sonic is.

Err yeah it's awesome

3) Dark Out

Pretty rough around the edge survivalism game. I like the research aspect but found the world to be extremely boring in variation. Although I do believe something decent can come out of this. I actually bought this from Greenmangaming sometime ago in hope that it might tickle my Terraria bone, sadly it hasnt. However I do believe with alot of polish this game can be pretty damn decent!

Games I played but can't judge yet/ Older games not allowed to vote

*) Unepic

Seems decent but have yet to dedicate enough time to actually judge it

*) Papers, Please

Not alot of games forces me to actually feel bad about following the rules. I think alot has been said about this game but yeah, looking forward to seeing the final release on this!
