Episode 5 – First Battle - Battle of Trost (1)

I was all hyped for this episode and somehow ended up more hyped even while waiting for the delayed episode to appear on Crunchyroll, then to see it as it started with all awesome and epic motivated Eren, even inspiring Jean (more moments of these two please), some Connie and even newcomer Thomas, I was excited to see this Battle of Trost go down. Unfortunately the anime is still lead by an extremely questionable writing direction with a writer who seems to just want to make this one of the most awful stories to ever be animated.
First why introduce us to Thomas and have him with Eren making him all happy and then give us a good scene with Armin too, only to have them all watch Thomas be devoured like that. It came out of nowhere and caused me to hurt cause I had even got attached to him, expecting him to be like a happy version of Jean :( And then after that, I dont even want to repeat what happened but it was awful, made me step away from the computer and not even come back to the episode for a bit. I dont even want to finish this anime anymore and may just drop it. Eren losing multiple limbs and then being ate up and dying?! He is the hero, the protagonist, he's supposed to be invincible slaying titans like their buttered toast and what not, not the one being smashed like an ant. (oh and of course, Failkasa is safe...). I didnt sign up to get teary eyed from this anime. I wanted good feelings and confidence boosts in morale. Its a shonen action anime after all be more like it please with whoever is rising to take Erens place, I guess Armin or Rivaille? I doubt Ill be able to look at screencaps of Eren for a few days this is like part 2 jjba all over again for me.

The music this episode really sounded like the person decided to revisit a few pieces of the Guilty Crown ost and borrow select moments adding a Shingeki no Kyojin twist to them, the one that sounds extremely like it was inspired from Guilty Crown had to be certain parts of the song playing with Pixis.

DTL should really just quit watching Shingeki now.

If you're after "good feelings and confidence boosts in morale", then drop it now and never look back.

Yeah after watching the episode, the manga had a really

"I don't want to turn up the page
I don't want to turn up the page
I don't want to turn up the page :("

Feeling to it. The sense of danger is incredible.

Hahaha, this thread blew up in just one night.

I think the production remains engaging, but you start to see the seams. This episode looked very rough in parts. Also fucking CGI backgrounds, but I imagine that's not in contention seeing just how cheap the rest is. lol

Episode 5

Entertaining, but oh so cheap. For an anime based on one of the top selling new shounen action manga in Japan, I really didn't expect so many cheap scenes and outright stills for everything other than the main action scenes. At least the pacing seems relatively good, since I don't feel bored watching each episode even though I've read all of the manga. Lol. I wonder if some of the weirder Titan designs are the animators in Wit Studio making some sort of silent protest on how rushed the show is. They look... sooooo weird. Lololol.

Wow what an episode. Anticipating a few nightmares featuring Titans tonight. Especially that hobo lookin one.

I haven't watched an anime series that wasn't entirely available from the start since Ranma 1/2 on VHS. I've always arrived to a series pretty late. The wait for episode 6 already sucks.

Most of them are pretty much straight from the manga.

It is kind of strange. Years ago CG in anime wasn't really a common thing. I only remember seeing it in shows that were explicity CG, like the mechs or whatever being in CG was a seen as a feature instead of a cost cutting maneuver.

I'm seeing it more often in anime and it almost always looks bad.

Holy shit, this episode.

Oh yeah.

A Shingeki no Kyojin inspired champ would be pretty cool imo. :p

Alright, I am an casual anime watcher, as in this is the latest thing I have seen in forever that's actually new thanks to you Gaffers. Finished episode 5 just now. All I can say is
I've never felt this way watching an anime. THEY KILL OFF EVERYONE. All I could think of is Starship Troopers first invasion battle and how everyone that you just grew to know gets slaughtered. My jaw literally dropped when Thomas was caught. Then it blew my mind when they killed off the main character who I guess isnt the main character and my guess would be the sister?(which would make sense to me) unless Armin gets filled with the power of revenge or whatever. Anyways, loving it. I am so glad I didnt watch them separately. I let two weeks go by before I watch them to. On another note, why the hell do they not have underground tunnels(atleast for emergency evacuation purposes)? Or just live underground and have the whole area above ground for farming? Lol just some random thoughts.

Edit - Also I love the fact that there is no perverted bullshit in this. That is why I stopped watching Highschool of the Dead.

In some ways I'm glad I was spoiled on this. I won't drop any here of course.

Attack on Titan - Episode 5
This episode felt a lot shorter than the other ones for some reason.

Can't wait to see how they handle this guy.

Well you're gonna have to because I'm pretty sure he won't appear in this season.

Look at this PS1 CG FMV scene:

That looked really bad. It's unfortunate because the traditional animation in that shot is actually really good. I wonder how much stuff they're going to end up fixing on the blurays.

Hopefully the budget increase will result in less stills, although I don't think it will fix the production issues.

I do prefer stills over the horrible art we got in PP.

Started reading the manga yesterday and I'm on chapter 18 right now. Sooo good but I have to go to sleep now lol

PS: I got used to the art style and it's not as bad as it seemed initially. Just not super detailed and shaded in many scenes

What budget increase?

I don't know much about how the world of anime work in the commercial sense but judging from teh internet, this is a massive success.

How would the success(?) and the viewership not ensure a second season and a higher budget?

Well, someone involved with the production was soliciting animators on twitter and it was apparently because of a budget increase. I'm too lazy to find the links right now.

Wut? Wasn't he asking for animators to join the production at Wit Studio because they were understaffed? That would certainly explain why they've had to outsource production for 3 episodes running now, but I don't see how it's an indication of a budget increase. That makes no sense.

Well, it could be true that they're both understaffed and that they were given more money to actually hire animators. I found the source of the rumor though and it's an AnimeSuki post relaying what the company responsible for the french simulcast was told, so... yeah.

Whatever the case, it's certainly true that they're hiring more animators. Hopefully they hire good ones who can work fast, LOL.

Sounds legit! LOL!

Either way, I hope they don't all die before we get to the better action scenes. :)

Holy crap, that episode 5...
So I guess Eren isn't the main character after all, huh?

Jesus, this is starting to seem like it's going to
end up being almost as angsty as Berserk

Caught up on the story in the manga since I didn't want to wait to find out what happens next.

The story is awful. You will all hate this show soon enough.

Watch Mirai Nikki :)

Also DTL delivers. It seems a lot of the shows he's watching now are pissing him off :p

I knew some people wouldn't like it.

The anime has telegraphed so much of what is going to happen, I'm surprised more people haven't guessed some of the major spoilers.

Oh Guts, will you ever get to Elf Island...
