Aaron Greenberg on NextBox: E3 is all about the games, "tons of exclusives"

Why wouldn't it matter? If MS released thirty exclusives for XB3 day one, then never shipped another title, that would be horrifically bad.

Why? Are you going to play all 30 in that one day?

30 spread over a few years or 30 in a year is still 30. You don't have of buy them all at once.

I don't have to, but why wouldn't I?

You can if you want to, and like many of us, you'd have a giant backlog you may never get to anyway.

The list of games I haven't payed across PS360 and Wii would be enough games to fill probably 4 or 5 people's collections.

Yes, it would be bad. The games would not take advantage of advances in technology, in genre popularity, or in game design that would occur over a console's lifespan.

What kind of thought experiment is this? It makes no sense.

jRPG exclusives please. The Otaku in me is very excited. :D
I bet Microsoft will cater more the Japanimation than ever before.
Considering they want more 'weird' and 'obscure' games to hit Marketplace.

That didn't work out for them last time.

Though Lost Odyssey was kind of a cheesy snooze.

Well now Sony doubling down and expanding their first party studios and indie relations makes way more sense. There is no way they can compete with the money Microsoft is willing to throw around for 3rd party exclusives.

I personally prefer Sony's method as there is a great opportunity to have a lot of new and diverse games, but I know Microsoft's method will probably sell more consoles, at least in NA. It's going to be interesting to see how everything shakes out and how each company's plan works.

That's a good point. I didn't think of that. Was probably being too simplistic.

Not that I think that highly of Sony's releases being spread. They had nothing of quality last year at retail. This year they have quite a few I imagine will be very good. It would have been much better to get half of them out last year.

I guess it would depend on when you bought the consoles. People buying them now have a lot to choose from on each console. MS seems to front load a lot, which obviously benefits early adopters, and then relies on third parties to pick up slack as things go along. And as sales indicate, consumers dont give a darn if a game is a timed exclusive, a real exclusive, a console exclusive etc or a multi-plat. They simply buy what looks interesting.

You're also playing into the myth people perpetuate that the 360 hasn't had any new games in a long time. XBLA last year was amazing.

Very true. I don't think Sony can afford to sit around and let Microsoft get into bed with all these third parties - Sony have strong studios but it doesn't mean much if their software doesn't have strong selling potential. They need to spend a bit of money on flattering some developers, they wouldn't want to become entirely insular like Nintendo has.

Just playing two hours a night, and eight over a weekend and you can beat three normal length games a week. All thirty in two months-ish.

When you ship games matters. I do have a significant backlog, but it's because it's games I don't really care about. The games I'm excited about I play as and when they come along.

Kinect Tennis, Kinect Bowling, Kinect Paddling, Kinect Dance, Kinect Party, Just Dance Thrift Shop DLC (temporarily), Kinect Racing, "New" Halo, Gears of Wars: The ReGearing, Forza Kinect, Minecraft Kinect, Dance Central.

They better because with Sony off to a good head start and Nintendo in sort of bad place right now they need to pull out all the stops. And I don't mean more Kinect.
Im not getting 2 systems. Im rooting for Sony but if MS goes big and moneyhats the shit out of pubs then there could be a problem for Sony

can not wait until E3 to see what games become the defining ones for MS this new generation.

sounds like they are getting aggressive and goin all out

So Uncharted doesn't have 4 games if we include Vita? Infamous doesn't have 3?

Viva piñata, Crackdown, Kameo, Splosion Man, etc etc aren't unique?

I don't want to get into list wars, but this myth about the Xbox not having any first party games, or unique titles needs to stop being perpetuated. Timing shouldn't be a factor.

For example, if both consoles have the same umber of exclusives, how does the timing of their release change anything?

Sony have been consistent with the quality and variety of releases throughout the seven years. MS had some fantastic stuff during the first 3-4 years of 360 ...then it looked like they just gave up on creating exciting games and exclusives and just went for CoD DLC and Kinect. Those games you mention on 360 all came out during the first half of the generation. Notice a pattern?

I'm not saying Sony aren't guilty either as they've done the same with God of War Ascension and GT6 but that's about it. Everything else has been new and more interesting at least. To be fair its more to do with the longer generation and MS and Sony having to sustain themselves. But the fact remains Sony is still releasing new stuff on PS3 while MS haven't done jack since Kinect come out.

They've pretty much took the lazy way out with the 360 for the last three years and kept releasing sequel after sequel because games aren't important to them like they once were. When they saw people jumping on Netflix and streaming media content, their priorities changed and now lie elsewhere unfortunately.

They say this shit every time before the show only to follow it up with the biggest letdown. I ain't buying it. Good luck with those Kinect games Microsoft....

It really does seem to offend some people that Microsoft might actually be serious about having games on their videogame console...

Point out the people that are offended. I see a lot of people like you going after straw men. The people saying Kinect stuff are just going off what Microsoft has led them to believe is the focus. Don't blame them, blame the message.

Sad but true. I've been let down by their E3's for the past 3-4 years why would it be different now? They're not gonna revert to their former glory 360 years because things have changed so much for 360 since then. It's almost like they'd be admitting to their mistakes if that happened.

I'd sure love a Lost Odyssey 2 or a new game from Tri-Ace though.

What is the point in going after the casual market now? The system will be too expensive, and it'll give the core audience to Sony.

It doesn't matter what they've done for the last three years, they weren't launching a console, they were expanding an audience.

They're scared. They thought Sony might have it in the bag for some reason. As I said earlier, people forget that the 360 destroyed the ps3 for about 3 years at the beginning of the gen. Xbla has always been good, especially these past few years.

Basically, people know that MS has money and can afford to make stuff happen and that is what is making some shit their pants in salty fear.

They haven't said anything about the focus of their next system

Of what? A video game console? Why are people talking as if posters are cowering in fear of what a video game console is going to offer? Yeesh.

Shouldn't people be allowed to be excited about a competitor or cautiously optimistic without being called "scared?" Of course, depends how serious you or they are taking all of this.

Launch adjust, Sony has outsold the 360 quite comfortably.

That's a fucking miracle with how bad the PS3 was before the 2009 relaunch

I just don't want the future of gaming decided by the availability of multiplayer maps for FPS games I don't five a fuuuuuuck about.

I wish Nintendo's weakened console standing would translate into more light-hearted non-shooty games on MS and Sony platforms.

And Sony having more numbers of interesting and/or small games is almost uncontestible by this point. XBLA is a joke lately.

Is this a joke?

I dont understand why people like you continue to shit on "Xbox" threads when you clearly are not a fan of it.
