I think the anime is really struggling to really handle some of these moments, Jokes at the wrong time just feel offensive to characters on screen, odd titan designs make it try to be fun when its just serious distressing moments, I mean, people are dying all around, why those designs...doesnt make sense.

Agreed, every time we learn something about the titans it seems to make them more sinister and malicious in their nature towards humans. I never found the odd faces funny, always came across as creepy or disturbing to me.

It could be argued this guy was sorta funny looking with that smile, but I found it upon first viewing to be extremely disturbing and unsettling. A true monster, the human features just make them creepier combined with their general lack of coordination and purpose beyond eating people.

I hated how a good portion of this episode was spent on flashbacks and Mikasa/Armin mind-reading. Even some of the flashbacks were flashbacks of 2 minutes ago within the very same episode. Not only is this insulting to the viewer's intelligence, but it is also a huge waste of time.
