According to the report, it's already been fixed. You supposedly get only 1 drop per $9 if you didn't purchase anything before the beta though, unlike TF2 where a single purchase gives you all 5 drops.

I still do not have the possibility to earn trading cards in Dota 2, although I had previously bought items. Plus, I am not sure the bug is fixed: if I buy items worth more than $9, I am not sure the transparent badge would appear in my profile. Unless proved otherwise, I am going to wait for an answer about this issue from Steam Support.

I went into a TF2 server today and someone said they were selling a Demo card. I thought, "Why not?" and asked how much. "1 Rec." Okay. He had a few more to sell. I then asked if anyone else had cards to sell for 1 Reclaimed. I bought 18 cards for 6 Ref, and sold them for the value of 3 Keys. Madness.

Pretty much. There's a couple of exceptions (namely that anyone who didn't buy any items for TF2 or Dota 2 will have to spend $9 in the shop before they get a complementary card, and everyone who bought something before this beta started will get the standard drop quantity on top of that), but every game has a drop quota of half the collection (rounded up to a whole number), and (aside from aforementioned exceptions) there's no way to increase that. Hence, trading or buying is required to get the badge (although who needs that when you can just buy the background of your choice for less money than the cards needed to craft the background?).

1. No, it does not. You have to buy $9 from the in game stores for an additional drop in a F2P game.

2. Valve doesn't want you to be able to get all the cards by yourself. You're supposed to trade for them or use the marketplace to complete a set/lv up badges.

For non-free2play games, you can only get half (rounded up) of the cards as drops. Any cards after that either need to be traded for or bought off the marketplace. Selling cards, achievements, reaching certain levels, waiting for weeks, none of those things currently reset drops. Those initial card drops are the only drops you'll get.

Wait, really? You can't even get new cards after you trade them away? The only way to get complete sets is to buy them, it seems...

I just focus on Dota. I'd like to have stuff from portal, half life 2 too but it will take too much time.

And considering I play too much dota as it is, I might as well pimp my profile out with it.

That's the way to do it. Sell/trade away cards for games you don't really care about to get stuff/badges for games you love. Trying to get every badge for every game you own is a fool's errand.

Al also made a post over the weekend that made it pretty clear they don't see an issue with the limited drop rate. They think it won't be a problem because people will trade other items (tf2 drops, dota 2 drops, coupons, games, etc...) for cards, some people just won't care about badges, and as they add other games to the system you can trade those cards for the ones you really want. The kind of feedback they want is what other drops you want to see for your profile and is there any other community items they could create to hand out those drops.

Thanks for the update. Since I do not have a transparent Dota 2 badge, it means owning a Valve complete pack from Fall 2012, buying a Compendium on the Market before Steam Trading Beta was released, and buying an item worth $1 on Dota 2 store, do not entitle me of 4-5 card drops in Dota 2. In the end, I will just end up not buying anything:
  • from Dota 2 store, because 1 drop for $9 is too few,
  • from Steam Market, because of the couacs with the Compendiums sold $1 cheaper and being different on the Market from these sold with the Dota 2 store.

It would be way cheaper just to buy the 8 Dota cards from the marketplace vs. spending $9 for a random drop of 1 Dota card.

Not spending anything at the dota store either.

I just got a Heavy background from my TF2 badge but I was hoping for the Pyro one so if anyone wants to trade them I'd be up for that.

Yeah you could get all eight for ~$7 easy without even trying to get them cheap. They'll go even cheaper when the next wave of invites go out. The trend I've noticed is that when an invite wave goes out prices drop and then slowly rise as the people who care try and finish their sets so it might be a better idea to wait for the next wave of invites if your plan is to buy cards.

Regarding card drops: You get only the number of cards that is indicated? 4 for HL2 etc. You don't get multiple cards of the same type or anything? So you have to buy/trade for something else to fill them up?

Whoa, the price for Finale ( foil) went up to 66€ on steam market, some of these cards really sell for a lot, since I saw some of the foil cards going for near 20€

It's random. You can get the same card more than once. I got 2 pryos and 2 demoman. Someone else got 3 pyros. It happens.
