Xbox One: Power Brick revealed

Internal power supplies have cooling. They can plan the heat output when its internal, they can't when its external.

There are fans on external power supplies.
My launch ps3 is still going.
That doesn't change the fact that heat damages power supplies.
So then why not just make it internal for aesthetics?
Power supply is one of the hottest components of a system. Why do you want that inside a machine?

This is irrelevant. Most of us, regardless of whether it's a power brick or internal, would have to send the console/power brick/get a replacement.
.

What are you talking about. If an external power brick dies, you can go to an electronics store and buy another and be back to playing games in a very short time. I know they sell 360 power bricks at Frys. I bought a second power brick for my wii a long time ago, so I could transfer it from two different locations quickly.

If an internal power brick dies, its not a 30 second job to swap it out.

I don't care about the power brick either way (I have enough space behind my TV), but reading the first page of this thread I really hope we can put this whole hating on Gies thing behind us when he finally gets that community manager job at MS. He'll automatically be less controversial and less vocal because he's getting fed official statements instead of trying to write these himself and fucking it up.

another carpet heater huh? kinda disappointing. the worst thing about the 360 one is the cables are so fuckin stiff too, but there is the few positives i guess for if it breaks easy to replace, noise, etc.

In addition to this fact I'd rather the smaller form factor of the Wii for shelf space rather that my PS3 phat. But again that's my opinion I wouldn't attempt to dissuade people via online forums from buying a PS3 because of my personal preference.

Why are people acting as if internal power supplies have a history of breaking? They don't.

Yes they do. In fact, all power supplies.

Otherwise my workplace wouldn't have so many RMA orders for new power supply units.
No there aren't. There are holes to let air pass out of and the design is usually made to have less surface contact, but there isn't a fan.

For power supplies that use lower wattages, manufacturers don't add them. For higher ones, they do.

I would assume that an external powerbrick would lead to less heat in the console itself and thus quieter cooling.. something that is always welcome.

Or am I not doing it right?

I don't understand this whole internal/external power brick argument. Most of the PS3's issues were not power related. Neither were the 360's issues. Is this arguing because if something fails it's easier to replace a valid argument? With this line of thinking you'd have exterior hard drives and disc drives.

Well I'm talking specifically about the Xbox 360 power supply. It doesn't have a fan.

I wonder if the ps4 will have a brick. I think that it is a very reasonable possibility.

I have a 52" Sony xbr4 that has no brick. Also a 24 visio that does have one. Sony seems to not use for consoles or TVs I believe. Had a 36" Vega long time ago, think CRTs had internals.

I'd be shocked if the ps4 had one.

GPU's get pretty hot too, maybe we should make that external. Lol

Seriously though as long as the console is reliable does it really matter wether its internal or external? Its all about build quality and i just hope MS arent going the external route because of heat issues.

Maybe it's easier to manufacture the same Xbox One and than add a power brick you need for each country.

Actually if you read into thunderbolt and external gpu, that could be the future although I think the all-in-one SoC is more progressive thinking.

I argue its a nonsensical debate used as fuel to dissuade people from buying an Xbox One. Just like AA batteries. There are potentially real reasons to not buy a One...those aren't them however.

They did? And still the same size?

Yup. This is the updated Slim.

You can make the same argument for internal power supplies as the situation is worse.

The power supply sits next to a heat source, which essentially is an oven.

There's much better cooling inside the machine. The power brick is actually more like an oven, especially sitting on a carpeted floor.

The GPU, RAM, disc drive, etc. all generate heat as well. Why not make them external?

Well they are external .... From the PSU...and kept in a separate case.

Power supply just uses wires to connect.

PCB etches and traces are expensive, which is why manufacturers try to jam all the components next to each other to save space and cut costs. It's why SoC is such a big deal.

Using wires to wire the whole system will look like a rat's nest and be prone to a lot of errors. At the same time, you don't want to solder the whole thing especially components that need to be easily replaced rather than take a hot soldering iron and risk burning the rest of the components.

Yeah... the 360 was totally a quiet and cool machine with the external power supply.

388 posts about XB1 power brick?
And people say Xbox is not popular :)

To me it does not make difference if consoles have internal or extrnal power supply. But I would prefer internal if I moved console alot

I personally have no problems with power bricks. It probably helps the system stay cooler and probably more reliable right? If you organize your entertainment center setup well(I don't) Then you could found a spot for it that's out of the way

As long as the brick part isn't by the end of the cable you plug in the wall, I could care less if there's a power brick or not.

Now...if the X1's cord is like the fucking Genesis' unholy bastard of a power cable...then we have some problems!

Seriously...who thought this was a good idea?!?!

I think the slims don't, but the original designs do.

Makes sense since the newer units don't use as much wattage as the old ones.
I'm pretty sure it's the other way around. The Xbox 360 Slims do have a fan in the power supply, but I can't remember if the original did.

Yeah... the 360 was totally a quiet and cool machine with the external power supply.
Well, my 360S is quieter than my PS3 Slim.

That's nothing. Have you ever seen the power supply for a Colecovision?
