The Last of Us Demo (GoW:A Exclusive) Discussion Thread

Tempted to go to Redbox which is not even a minute from my house...but I feel like I want to experience the game in full rather then just a demo. This is like Man of Steel....the hype is to much to handle

My impressions and a quick overview:

-Demo is around 15-20 minutes long
-Trailer plays at the end
-6 enemies total. All Zombies
-2 clickers. One is a dumb QTE
-Mostly exploring
-QTE to open door
-Graphics look decent
-Sound design is awesome
-UI is better
-Acting is solid
-Combat works surprisingly well
-Died only once, because I missed a prompt. Didn't use listen mode at all and doesn't seem necessary - GOOD!

On a side note, I just finished the demo! NOOOO!

NO NO, I wanted more... and they just send me to the Pre-order page with two options:

- The Last of Us + Pack Sights and Sounds (game OST, Avatars, Dynamic Theme).

or

- The Last of Us + Survival Pack (100 Provision Points for Multiplayer, skin for Joel + Ellie for Single Player, 1 survival technique move, a Hat/cap and a Mask for Multiplayer)

Why can't I have them both? Now I need to decide which Digital Pre-order to get based on the pre-orders? Hmmm, also I was expecting this to be a 69€ but it's 59€ so this is also good news.

Also, my impressions, if anyone is interested:

- You should play this with a "decent" Headset for the best Sound experience.
- It gives you a feel of "you are weak" against 2 (or more) enemies.
- Stealth is very important. Play SMART.
- Save your ammo. Go for Stealth Kills. Create better Melee weapons.
- Look at every place for more items that you can use for crafting.
- Some enemies you can't knock off and they will "one-shot" kill you

Game really plays great and it feels great. The attention to detail is quite amazing at least for me.

Ugh, was worried they'd be using QTE's. I hope they are kept to a minimum as they really brought down Uncharted 3's combat.

Cheers for the impressions. Also good to hear about Listen Mode. Too many games have shipped with game breaking modes recently (I'm scowling at you Hitman: Absolution).

this is a travesty what they did with this demo. When you click square on GOWA main screen it leads you to a countdown page for TLOU and there you click start if u want to download the demo. Then it leads you to PSN store, demo is only 150MB, nothing wrong there right? You download the demo, and you think it will install the demo in a sec and you can play it, FUCK NOOo! 150mb is misleading BS. Once you click on TLOU icon on XMB then it begins install that takes forever, as if it was downloading(again) demo? So I pull internet cable from my pS3 and install stops!! Hahaha nice try ND. why fake 150mb demo when clearly it's still downloading stuff from wherever? I waited 20 minutes for 19% and I gave up.

This cheap tactics from ND almost makes me wanna cancel my preorder. ughhh

EDIT:in before it's justdowloader, I don't give a fuk. It just forces me to click on more screens, it's misleading. I just know PS4 will have same slow shitty PSN store...

Wow, I didn't realize how tensed up I was playing it.
As the Trailer started at the end I could feel myself relax and start breathing normally.
And then as I thought the demo was quitting back to the XMB I find myself in the PSN Store looking at the game to Pre-Order lol.

The game was always going to be a day 1 for me especially after the Uncharted's, but The Last of Us is very very different, in a fucking awesome way :)

And I was always under the assumption that having GoW:A only gave you the demo 1 week before everyone else (2 weeks before launch) meaning that it'll be on the store just before or during e3, or am I wrong?

Dude calm down. It's Friday. Have a beer and read impressions of the demo while you wait. I don't own God of War so I can't even do that :(.

I think you won't regret fellow GAFfer. It really seems they gave Sound a big role in this game (and it makes sense since it's an important feature to avoid being detected, etc).

You can have them both if you preorder from GameStop.

Decided to break my blackout on the game as I have a copy of GOW:A.

The demo isn't very spoiler heavy. Graphics are decent, though less impressive than Uncharted 2 / 3. Animation is fantastic. The sound design and music (though limited) is fantastic and creates a real atmosphere of dread. There's lots of nice little touches throughout the demo.

Gameplay wise I'm not so sure. The stealth works fairly well, the gunplay is very different from uncharted - it is very sensitive and tricky to aim at enemies, stealth and melee attacks are more effective. Melee combat felt a bit sluggish, but weighty - so I'm guessing this is intentional.

I like the banter between characters, the game has a lot of heart and the characters feel like they are actually interacting with one another which is cool. Naughty Dog have always been good at this though.

Overall I'm less hyped than I was. Maybe it was a bad segment to demo but it felt like a game with excellent presentation, writing and sound design hindered by dull gameplay. I spent a while just hunting for pick ups and sneaking around dark environments. Again, this could just be a case of a 'bad demo' as the E3 demo looked far more entertaining.

A 15-20 minute demo?

That I will milk the piss out of.

Hopefull it'll give me Bioshock 1 blue balls all over again.

Demo didn't really do much for me at all but I think that has more to do with the fact that it's so short. There wasn't really enough time to get a feel for the mechanics

I agree with the headphone recommendation, if you have them, use them.

I have the Sony Pulse Headphones, I'd say they are amazing with anything I play through them, but the excel with this demo.

Just on the menu screen alone you get a fly buzz around you randomly, and the breeze.
The sound and music is top notch.

Keep getting an error message at the download screen, guess no demo for me tonight :(
Have you tried backing all out, signing off and back in? Because it seems that they have solved the server issues.

I'm in Europe fellow GAFfer. Might go with Digital version and the Pack that gives me the Soundtrack.

Where you at? Because Gamestop is running the same promotion in Europe (at least in Denmark where I live)

Hold fast. I have Ascension sitting not twenty feet away from me and I'm not downloading the demo.

This game needs to be experienced in its fullest glory at release, a demo will only sully that experience with its teasing nothingness.

Hold fast, st1llx.

Anybody tried it with the sony pulse headphones yet?

I did, amazing sound work! The clickers are incredibly terrifying while active. Was there a special mode for the headset?

And I thought the graphics were pretty incredible, some great texture work all around. Great IQ for the most part as well, the only time I was distracted by aliasing was with one of the fences on the outside. Rain droplets look good as well, but could be considered almost cartoonish at times.
