CNN reports on Next-Gen Used Games Policy #PS4NoDRM; IGN and Giantbomb remain silent

Stop pretending they're journalists and we can all move forward. Patrick reports on news he can get, but he's not going to start digging around or pressing Microsoft for answers.
Well, he would have 4 or 5 years ago, but having a cushy, relatively "safe" job at Giant Bomb is much more fun than digging for stories and trying to work your way up from the bottom and make a name for yourself, like he did with the IW story.

Money should go to the developer not retailers. Gamestop makes $1.4B in profits just from used games. They made $2.2B in profits 2012.
The developers deserve exactly zero dollars from used game sales.

Sony hasnt't made a penny. If you add the profits of MS, Unbisoft, EA, Square, Capcom it is not the same as what gamestop makes every year.

Sounds like a problem with their business model.

No, the best part was him completely ignoring that and continuing on like he never read it.

I was wondering, do you have any links for this particular saga? He constantly tweets about SC2/Dota 2 and general rambling so it's really hard to sort through his feed.

The most popular thing on Giant Bomb is the Bombcast. You'd be shocked at how many people listen to it weekly.

I wouldn't be so fast to confuse popularity with high quality output. The majority of the Bombcast is lowbrow comedic musings on life mixed in with some superficial musings on games*. That former is the mainstay of traditional radio shows that always pulls in a significant viewership.

* At least it was as of a few years ago. I stopped listening because mainly, I don't have a few hours to waste, and I'd rather spend any free time learning about world events. And secondly I don't find their personalities, outside of Vinny, particularly entertaining when they don't talk about game titles or issues. It may have changed... but I doubt they've messed with their formula for success.

Folks like Collin, Greg from IGN has spoken about this for years. Even in GT weekly podcast they spoke about it. Every one keeps saying that money should go the developer.

Right now, if they say any thing explicit people will get all rallied up that they are being paid by MS to act as their PR. So any one who doesnt support used games are simply not being very vocal.

LOL WHY should developers get paid twice for their game? It's the ONLY industry where fans advocate to be ripped off jeez... And good on CNN for reporting it, but I still think they are both hoping, like most things this blows over and people won't be able to resist the next COD or Battlefield or whatever.

The fact that he calls other people "self important idiots" is deliciously ironic.

The developers already got their money, when the game was bought new. Why are they entitled to any profits from anything beyond the first sale? Gamestop is hated as some evil leech, but the developers don't operate and staff a chain of retail stores dedicated to gaming that does a lot to push sales of new games.

Killing the entire used market doesn't suddenly solve the industry's inefficiency and horrible management.

They deserve to be called out. They have sounded like Microsoft shills on their past two podcasts. It's embarrassing to listen to.

What are you talking about? I've both heard Jeff and Ryan specifically say "If X is true or if they don't do Y then they've seriously fucked up" and when the other people sounded like they were praising the TV focus on X1 you could almost tell he was holding back from saying "No, it sucks".

Never heard of Totalbiscuit. What a douche.

Keep fighting the good fight people. Consumer rights should be protected.

I don't see why that's funny unless you mean they have reported on it. If not, I didn't realize Giant Bomb hadn't reported on what is probably the single biggest issue in gaming right now. It's probably the biggest gaming news at all right now aside from E3 and the new consoles themselves. So if they haven't, why not?

because of the fucking hour long talk they had about it on the bombcast. Slamming the site for no reason other than ignorance. Educate yourselves before shaming others.

For anyone curious, TotalBiscuit is the #1 PC gaming-focused YouTube personality and has heavy involvement in the StarCraft II community. He and his wife own their own team and he does part-time professional casting for live events and online tournaments.

No surprise he doesn't give a shit about console DRM, but his logic to validate that opinion is ludicrous.

People who are talking about IGN and GiantBomb podcasts and articles that generally discuss used games are missing the point... admittedly, I could have phrased the title better to reflect it, but the point is that fans are trying to reach out directly to these companies as a united front and it's worth reporting on.

That's sad.

It's their signature content and the driving force of the website.

It's not sad. Their focus is not on articles, but audio and video content.

And Patrick has done multiple articles on this already btw. Not the campaign, but the DRM and the fumbling by Microsoft.

I'd be surprised if he wasn't holding one in the chamber specifically about this.

*Searches google for totalbiscuit, and lands on his youtube page* "Youtube's #1 PC gaming critic". I see he's arrogant not just on twitter, huh?

The more I think about it, if you're going to call out specific sites at least be more comprehensive. Seems odd to single out only those two. At least Patrick has run articles on the questions we have still lingering. Some sites have completely glossed even by that. Polygon's site may as well have a disclaimer that says Microsoft hasn't come down from the mountain the with tablets, so how could we know the word of the lord yet?

Yeah I think GB should be removed from the title. I find GB's complete malaise about the subject abhorrent but they haven't been exactly silent.

What are you talking about? I just listened to this conversation yesterday. Vinny went on a rant about how Gamestop rips people off, etc. He basically gave the publishers statement on this topic word for word. Not one guy on the podcast spoke up and suggested he might wrong about that.

When these guys criticize this stuff it's only in the most subtle of ways, but their general message has been one of approval for all of Microsoft's big changes coming with the new Xbox. Very little has been questioned.

y'all should be ashamed
It's not fair to pidgeonhole Giant Bomb on this. I mean, look at their news section:

http://www.giantbomb.com/news/

A grand total of five articles published since last week after the Xbone reveal. Two of which are weekly features, and another two questioning MS's stance on used games.

Microsoft has given media similar statements; trust me when I say IGN is digging deeper into this and working on reporting what the hell is going on.

Cool.

You guys should also look into the very real possibility that Ubisoft and TakeTwo didn't request this feature.

Alot of people seem to be going off the assumption that publishers have Sony/MS over a barrel, but it seems to be the platform-holder(s) who are in control.

As far as i remember the gaming media did a pretty good job getting answer from MS at the conference. Until MS decided to shut up, just like Sony did.

What do you expect? that they post every e-mail where they get "no comment, wait for E3" as an answer? And Giantbomb, along with quite a few other sites, have discussed the issue extensively. Even if they weren't as outraged as we were.

Its CNN so this will more than likely get overlooked. Why exactly is giantbomb being called out in the title?

While I hope the window of license checking is much bigger than 24 hours, and that always connected doesn't literally mean 'always;' it's not the console manufacturers job to keep Gamestop's used game business afloat.

I look at Steam and what it's done for PC game prices, and hoped the next generation would yield similar results. I am a little afraid this backlash will slow progress toward that end. That said, I totally get why people are upset. I love taking my console on vacation w/ me where an internet connection isn't always guaranteed, or to my in-laws house to play together (they don't have broadband). I'd hate to lose that.

I'm not really entirely sure how to be more clear. They should be reporting on initiatives taken by the consumer base to make their voices heard. I personally think that's newsworthy. Apparently CNN does, too.

*Ahem*

Lazy and unmeaningful you say...
Wow, what's wrong with this guy? Is he sour because he isn't the center of attention here or something? Famousmortimer clearly sparked this movement with his thread and it gained a lot of traction. Deal with it, TB. It's not you, it was someone else.
