Phones and tablets are modern day essentials that can play host to casual games. Those users don't need to consider the videogame console, which is still a luxury device, especially as there is no new video disc format. They are never coming back, at least until the price reaches impulse buy territory.

Their disposable income is locked into the phone/tablet upgrade cycle and they are quite happy with that.
The Kinect claimed the Guinness World Record of being the "fastest selling consumer electronics device" after selling a total of 8 million units in its first 60 days.[18][19][20] 24 million units of the Kinect sensor had been shipped as of January 2012.[1]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinect

All those saying that the camera is cheap need only look at the cost of a standalone kinect sensor on any store right now. Its a significant cost for little benefit, kinect games so far suck.
Very short-sighted. The Eye is not Kinect. And we have no idea what Microsoft has in store for the new Kinect. The tech is certainly impressive.

If true, bye bye PS Move. We hardly knew ye.

(and such a shame, seeing that it was the most precise and best motion controller released for the consoles)

Which is exactly what MS and to a lesser extent sony are trying to change.

there not making consoles, they are making smart phones for the living room.

The company that makes a device that is the equivalent to smartphone in the living room wins.

The traditional gaming console is going the same way as the traditional gaming handhelds.

Its a DS4 video, if you buy an separate DS4 it will not include a camera, that's all that disclaimer says to me...corporate legal stuff. But I hope it doesn't come with all PS4s.

That makes no sense to me. It's saying a DS4 feature might require the camera, which is sold separately. That's crystal clear to me that the camera doesn't come with the console. Otherwise it would just say some features require the camera.

Well, I'm not sure about this move. Not having it there from the start is just going to make it a limiting option, and no one will care about tacked on "supports optional PSeye" support. Either make it from the ground up for it, or don't use it at all. Not much will be made with it in mind though if it's just a peripheral, so that's kinda crappy.

*shrugs*

its most likely gonna be a lame gimmick peripheral crap anyways, (minus video chat which is cool, but if i need that I'll buy it optionally) with Sony studios forced to do lame shit on launch software with. stand up and balance your body to get over the log on Uncharted stuff.

Anyway, Vita owners will be hoping as few games require a camera as possible.

exactly- useless without the camera. I can see indicators for player 1/player 2 etc- but the PS3 already does this more effectively with standard LEDs which (again) aren't visible or useful during gameplay. Given the positioning of the LED on the dualshock 4, the color LED bar will be similarly useless during gameplay.

It'll be bundled with the PS4, this thread is premature and getting people's hopes up (although to be fair Ami put a question mark in the title). The video is about the DS4 and the message is referring to the Eye being sold separately from a DS4, not a PS4.

I'll gladly eat crow though

Also if it doesnt come with it and I dont have it dont have fucking splash intros telling me to be careful with my Move controller and stuff, the OS should recognize I dont have it or the move and can piss off with that stuff.

.

I still have no idea how they managed to make this claim. It must be some specific parsing of "consumer device" because there are Samsung phones that have sold more, faster, than Kinect. And lots of other thing too.

This won't be good in the long run, just like all peripherals. There goes any hope of some awesome headtracking support that they seemed to have been developing being widely used. And *requires camera* will not be a sales booster for those particular games.

Playing FPS with Move is everything BUT a gimmick. It's the closest thing to precision of a mouse you can get really. (I know this thread isn't about Move but removing PS Eye 2 will be a significant hinderance to Move)

Point is - people were buying it.

Thank god, i don't to pay for that camera that i'll never ever use. They made the move and kinect because wii was such a phenomenon, but that's over now. If you are going to make motion control the primary control method like the wii then sure you pack in the camera, but you don't include a secondary, optional control method with every console.

That's ignoring all of the additional revenue Sony could've brought in by having camera functionality standardized. More camera control games would've been made (meaning more licensing fees for Sony), the Eye might have influenced more people to get the PS4 over the Xbox plus Kinect, etc.
Ubisoft will still make Just Dance 5 for the PS4 Eye, and it will still sell poorly on the PS4, relative to the other platforms. More camera control games being made is redundant unless people are actually buying them. To recoup the cost of a $20 camera you're talking about a PS4 purchaser buying around 2-3 purely motion controlled games to justify that cost; this would be in excess of any other loss they would be taking on the hardware. So I highly doubt, on balance, the camera provides any net financial benefit.

This isn't some great loss, developers weren't just wary of Kinect and the Eye because those peripherals weren't on all systems; by now both of those peripherals have installed bases of a large enough size to service any given title. That they weren't included didn't stop them from coming up with groundbreaking ideas for those products. They didn't do it because they didn't have any groundbreaking ideas for them.

Come on now the move? that little controller? shit.. shit looks like a dildo :p

point taken, but its not gonna come with a move is it? so you can buy a camera if you want it, those that dont get an option. perfect imo.

Are you suggesting only casuals would buy it at launch?

Because it's going to sell out the first few months because of hardcore gamers, regardless of price.

Not suggesting anything.

I'm saying exactly what I posted. We'll find out. I don't think either of these consoles will sell out personally.

Slightly surprised given how it was shown and elements of the DS4 design - on the other hand could be 2 SKUs with a low price core gaming SKU (minus camera and with smaller HDD) and a higher price "all in" SKU.

Choice is always good but I'll wait for stronger confirmation than this.

This wouldn't make sense.

If the camera is an essential part of the Playstation 4 package they wouldn't need to write "is sold separately".

Exactly. It's not like you need a camera for every controller. You need one camera. And if there is a camera included with every console, there is no point in this message. That's like saying you need a PS4 for the controller.

That would be pretty funny if it didn't because complaints of a Kinect camera packed in were countered with guarantees the PS eye would too.

If it is not bundled then they might as well not release it (for gaming purposes)

I thought the DS4 required it with was the delio with the lights on it?

Thats exactly what I said. I was under the impression that the local split screen function required the use of the camera to sense the light bar. Perhaps they were only referring to the lightbar changing colors to identify the player?

I think they'll both probably sell out at launch, for the first few months anyway.

I don't think for a second that the majority of people are going to pay the same price for them as they would a tablet/phone though. Gaming consoles just aren't as valuable to the majority of people.

Phones and tablets are seen as a necessity due to the convenience, they've almost replaced the home PC for a lot of people.

Sold separately to the dualshock 4 (which is what the video is about), not the console. I'm sure there will be stand alone camera for those that break etc.

Also the PS4 design tester had both the camera and controller thrown in. Could indicate it as one package (hopefully).

The viral team is hard at work today it seems.
It's a bit unfair to legitimate posters, but it's getting kind of difficult to take a lot of comments from new members at face value anymore, without casting a suspicious eye.

It would be good if bishoptl actually did just make a thread outing them all.

You heard it here first, the PS EYE will be bundled with PS4. I don't think they would do promo videos and press shots with the DS4, PS EYE, and console together if it wasn't their expectation to sell it as a cohesive package. I strongly believe that most games will make use of the PS EYE + DS4 lightbar by default whether it be for non gameplay items or gameplay.

I don't really care if it's bundled or not nor will I be disappointed if it's in.

The system itself already seems really attractive with or without a camera.

Sorry but this is ridiculous.

I agree. I don't doubt for a second that there are real people out there that have this view. But with the shadow of doubt over everyone and bish's talk of making a post and linking to the website of viral marketers I can't help but think that every fanboy claim that's somewhat absurd is from them.

But we were making absurd claims without viral marketers so it's not particularly fair.

399 Xbox One with all the package
399 PS4 plus the Price of move

that's why

and before "gamers don't care about that"...well the casual market care and it's big

Move isn't being sold with the PS4. we're just talking about the camera. That's a different ball of wax than a camera plus controller package (which is what the move is.)

Sorry but this is ridiculous.

not really, it's not very likely but I can see the rationale. The move wand required a camera that was typically packed in. The DS4 *can* work with the PS4 cam, but it's not sold together in a bundle and isn't required.

If both are 399 day one cop for both. It wouldn't be a failure if they didn't include at least the eye, but it'll be expensive for casuals to jump on the train

I think most people are indifferent. The camera being bundled or not isn't a deal breaker for most folks on this site (HARDCORE GAMERS). We're simply speculating whether or not its going to come with or without it. I say it is for the reasons mentioned in my previous posts.

i'd prefer the option, but its not a dealbreaker for me unless its required to function like Kinect. there could be some neat things for it. only major dealbreakers for me is always online and pay for multiplayer.

It will be, but not in America. In certain EU territories it will be bundled.

No, the video showed and advertised the DualShock 4 as controler for the Playstation 4. Writing you need to buy a PS4 to use the controller is redundant and unnecessary from a legal point of view.

A cheap basic version PS4 without camera it's not impossible - I would say it's even very likely that Sony will release such a basic package.
