Polygon: Xbox One policy "gross, despicable, greedy, pathetic, cowardly"

People still dont know that theyre only after page views? They knew they'd get them with their TLoU review, and they knew they'd get them with this article.

The only thing greedy, despicable, and disgusting is Polygon itself

Who is in charge at Microsoft? Who are the bosses? Who is responsible for the new Xbox, Windows Phone, Bing, Windows 8? Can you read about it somewhere?

EDIT: Here is some stuff, from January: http://www.forbes.com/sites/adamhartung/2013/01/20/sell-microsoft-now-game-over-ballmer-loses/

Microsoft makes more than 75% of its profits from Windows and Office. Less than 25% comes from its vaunted servers and tools. And Microsoft makes nothing from its xBox/Kinect entertainment division, while losing vast sums in its on-line division (negative $350M-$750M/quarter). No matter how much anyone likes the non-Windows Microsoft products, without the historical Windows/Office sales and profits, it’s hard to see how long Microsoft can remain sustainable.

The entire XBone debacle REEKS of Ballmer.

microsoft is so wrong on this. love seeing them called out, specially by polygon.
I look forward to their vision of the future failing, and not coming to fruition

Well, this is a pleasant surprise!

Its the whole "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" so to speak. Its still a good awareness piece.

They are only going to be able to bring their NO DRM Policies to their 1st Party titles or titles they publish. They have already said it is up to the developer.

However, it also appears the PS4 is not built with these DRM restrictions built within the system like MS. Sony will probably let Publishers simply use online passes or something, and the publishers will charge like $20 for a pass compared to $10 this generation.

One thing that is a bit puzzling. Microsoft's DRM and used game policies seem so complicated, on the hardware and software side, they had to have spent a LOT of time developing this. Being able to have a family member play your games, being able to give it to one friend of 30 days only 1 time, being able to deactivate games at participating retailers and trade them in, publishers being able to utilize one, all or none of these features if they want.

These policies flat out SUCK, but are quite impressive from the software side that they were able to integrate all of this into their new system. Shows me they have spent so much time on integrating this system, they may have fallen behind on the hardware and software development side because of it.

I have forgotten what all features aren't available but some of the friend sharing features don't seem to be in there at launch, seems the policies were even worse than what they are today. Seems they actually 'listened' and instead of giving us Bull Shit, gave us Monkey Shit and said "hey , at least your species now is related, feel happier...... now eat!"

They still have time to change their most objectionable policies.

That's the beauty of software solutions; you can rewrite the software at any time. I hope some of this concern is reaching the people in a position to facilitate changes.

You weren't around for Sim City launch, I take it?

I was. The review, then the re-review, then the re-re-review. I tend to ignore reviews in general though, so maybe that is why they don't bother me. I like their pieces on indie developers, etc.

Give Chris Plante a raise, Polygon. Great piece and it's heartening to see some enthusiast press on the side of the consumers for a change.

Not a lot, true. I think it was somewhere around $25 for the whole lot.

I must say I am a bit impressed.

It was surprisingly big. It even had room for several multi-CD games, like the Baldur's Gate series or Sanitarium. True, the console section was larger, but there were many more console generations. There were bins with NES/SNES/Master System/Genesis carts in some flimsy plastic bags (IIRC).

Well, my experience with my EB Games in 2005 had the same little spindly shelf of PC Games back then as the GameStop that replaced them does today. There was a lot of console games in contrast.

Correct, it was smaller, and it got smaller still, to nearly non-existent. But it definitely existed, and it had a good selection of interesting niche (and not-niche) games. Not exactly "never had any real used gaming market".

Alright, perhaps my phasing was off, but I do not think it tanishes my point that PC gamers and console gamers do have very different expectations for their games. Obviously, PC gamers had to be okay with used games disappearing while console gamers are not okay with it. Conversely, console gamers are okay with paying $60 a year for online gameplay, while PC gamers were not okay with it.

It's not the end of the world. But you can see it from here.

Good on Polygon.

Even if they did, it'll be too late. The damage has already been done.

They shouldn't have came up with these ridiculous policies in the first place.

I'm generally a critic of Polygon, but I must give them credit for this editorial.

Not only is it true, it's really an excellent read.

Good job to Chris Plante and the growing list of media guys who are nutting up and speaking the truth here.

Perhaps the reviewers just didn't think TLoU was that great of a game.

Nonsense.

At the end of the day, if they change the objectionable policies and deliver on the games, nobody will give a shit about any of this and what they *tried* to do.

Maybe the games press should factor DRM heavily into their review scores. If all of the xbone launch titles are rated as 3/10, then maybe Microsoft will take notice. But if the press bitch about xbone now, and then do little but sing its praises at launch then all of this will mean nothing.

I know its cliche, but a leopard doesn't change its spots. It's fn Microsoft! This company's MO is consistent and entirely predictable to anyone paying attention. I'm really interested in the market response to XBox One. Will gamers welcome the era of techno-feudalism or not?

I don't understand the complaints about Polygon, or its/his/her Microsoft lauding articles. I don't know much about this site, but I know that I and many others completely detest Microsoft's blatant anti-consumer policies they're putting on the Xbone. There's really no reason to support a console that does everything it does to make gaming even more of a pain in the ass, Microsoft need all the bad press they can get.

Why so much hate for Polygon? I happen to like a lot of their features. Reviews, meh, news, meh.

their staff tends to badmouth the community and get ultra-defensive on twitter and other public forums whenever anyone questions their actions

the microsoft-funded hilariously stupid site documentary got them off to a bad start and their wagon-circling snarky siege mentality has only made it worse

Wow, finally Polygon grows some balls. Maybe goes a bit toward recovering some of the good will lost. Now just replace their entire review team and, hurray!
