I cannot believe how truly gullible people in general are. You all believe this?

It may or may not be true, but the sheer leap of faith by the masses is disconcerting.

What "leaps" are there, here? We've had mod confirmation that this sort of marketing is happening and happens all the time.

The fact we have billion-dollar corporations involved in this industry practically guarantees that they'll be doing this.

This may seem snide but this is exactly what you get when you go over the top with complaints based on information that MS didn't even give.

Would it be fair if we started making snap judgements on what Sony failed to mention about the PS4? No. We hardly know a damn thing about that console and we gladly give them the benefit of the doubt.

When it comes to MS however, everyone went above and beyond to assume the worst. Should they have clarified the details earlier? Sure, but the amount of bullshit the gaming community was perpetuating based on a few unconfirmed facts was appalling.

If you go about something with one extreme then expect to be responded to with another extreme.
What? Now it's our fault we have MS employees shilling here?

We should have just not discussed the rumors that eventually turned out to be mostly true?

Are you suggesting that we're not giving Sony shit too? Because that's untrue. Or are you saying that the XBox is getting way more negative press? Because that IS true.

We just know less about what Sony's plans are, which leaves more room for fans to express hope. Microsoft has been much more open about what they're doing, and we don't like it, so of course everyone's piling on. If Sony announced today that they're were doing everything the XBone is with the PS4 then they'd start getting the same kind of concentrated negative press.

It wasn't until info on these practices started coming straight out the horse's mouth that the astroturfing on this issue started to become transparent.

I wonder how many users would be willing to submit to an extra level of authentication regarding who they are (or what they do) so that the moderation team had an additional piece of information to consider when making ban decisions?

Anyone who is verified to NOT be paid and is instead just very strong with their preference(s) could potentially be given slightly more benefit of the doubt (though there shouldn't be suspicion cast just because you want to maintain your privacy).

I'd be willing to trade a little bit of my privacy to give the moderation staff more information with the ultimate goal of further maintaining and improving the quality of the forum.

Post your paystub/W2 forms. ;)

A perfect example is the Kinect issues with privacy, and needing it in order for the One to function.

Both were complete BS yet people ran with their base assumption.

People assumed the worst because Microsoft executives actually said it themselves. Then when Microsoft PR saw the negative reactions they lied, and said "oh everything is not final and has been misreported"

Now just a day or two ago we got confirmation pretty much everything is as shitty as we first thought it was.

When Sony executives start saying the same shitty things about DRM, people will be just as mad. If they ignore the issue at E3, people will be mad.

The privacy issue was clarified but the Kinect has to be connected to work.

In any case it's not nearly as bad as what people were saying "it's always listening! MS is spying on you!"
In any case it's quite ironic how you're wrong while trying to correct others.

Until we have the TOS, we won't know what data they are going to be collecting. But because data = money, its almost guaranteed they will be collecting data.

People weren't willing to give MS the benefit of the doubt because the way the company has acted in the past. This is the manufacturer that made paying a subscription fee for online multiplayer a thing. This is the manufacturer that swept the massive issue of RROD under the rug. This is the company that got in major trouble back in the 90's under the suspicion of trying to create a monopoly in the PC market. Its much easier for people to believe that MS would bring these policies into motion(and they are) due to precedent.

But that's besides the point. Regardless of how people were acting back when these facts were rumors, no community deserves the toxic environment that's being caused by these scummy PR actions.

You mean those assumptions that turned out to be real?

Microsoft has no one to blame for their bad PR but themselves.

Their shilling just makes it worse in my opinion, as you can't trust anyone being positive about the XB one.

There it is. MS is totally justified to defend themselves from the flood of anger and negative opinions from actual customers who are outraged about horrible rumors that turned out to be 100% true. What choice is there but to fight back against all these angry customers.

Serious, no.

In some respects, it is like steam. I don't need to be a paid plant or brand partisan to acknowledge this. Sorry if it annoys you.

no, the talking point isn't "in some respects."

it's " it's just like steam, so don't complain,"

make sense? your addition of"in some respects" is not what is being stated. it's entirety as a comparison isnt valid whole to whole, pricing, 24 hour check is vastly different.

if you understand this much,we can continue.

Does "the reverse" mean Sony? Yes, that has happened, without going in to specifics.

If people are wondering if we catch all the marketers, the answer is unfortunately no, and probably not by a longshot. I'm confident there are at least some amongst us right now. The biggest problem is that it is often difficult to tell who is literally a paid, viral marketer and who is simply profoundly captured by a particular company's branding/marketing, or who may have always owned Nintendo products and now feels heavily invested in seeing them continue to succeed.

There are, as a non-MS example, definitely people who refer to Sony as SONY and speak almost reverently of their products and games, but who aren't actually paid to operate like that. Apple fans are the most notorious for this -- they become so enraptured with the brand, so fully captured by the marketing, that they operate as viral marketers without actually being paid like one.

This makes our job of rooting out the legitimately paid viral marketers much harder.
Just saw that Hix got banned. His last posts were not inflammatory/meltdown/flamebait stuff except the guy was VERY active in the Xbone E3 thread organizing stuff. Just wondering if there was any co-relation to this?

Sad, pathetic, and disgusting. I hope the eSRAM in every Xbone melts down and results in another class action lawsuit against MS. Wait, does MS even have to worry about a class action suit from the whopping 500 units that sell?

Company shills attempting to subvert the discourse surrounding their products via influential forums?

YOU DON'T SAY.

Next thing you'll tell me is that some of these pro-company memes originate from said companies.

A Darling of mine, and probably many more, Mr.Jim Sterling has had a guy "battling" him every time, the past days, he has said something negative about Microsoft.
Well a CEX employee found out that he is actually working for Microsoft.

https://twitter.com/Zabant/status/342990976203251712

And if you read more of the guys tweet it's all in the same tone, Microsoft is good, it's like steam, it's awesome etc. etc. well for me It's things like this that makes me pissed, Microsoft already lost my respect back in 2001 and gained my hate with Secure boot and now my anger.

I'm really wishing for a larger Linux selection on Steam and that GoG picks up because you know, vine doesn't always work.
New thread time?

He's worse than Orth;

Ron Berry: Go back to your NES and blowing your cartridges

Holy shit.

Wow, we have almost the same username. I probably wouldn't have posted as abrasively, but hey, welcome to the forum!

Why don't company employees just identify themselves? Is it just because they can't be trained properly and be trusted not to say dumb things? The proposition of going onto boards to change opinions proposes that people come to them to have arguments and have their minds changed.

Oh god. Like Sony and Nintendo don't do the same. They all do it. Welcome to reality...
Honestly I kind of wonder if Astroturfing ever even occurred to Nintendo or looked like a worthwhile use of resources. They seem kind of slow on the internet in general so it wouldn't surprise me.

Sony though, yeah, I kind of expect it but I imagine if Sony doesn't announce anything extreme they're going to blend in relatively easily.

In the comments section: Sean Ackerman and Alec Jeffrey. If you look at their profiles and post history they each only have about 14 posts and almost all of them are in this article defending the Xbox One and Microsoft. I don't know about Reddit (there's no proof as others have said), but I'm pretty damn sure the ones I listed are textbook examples of shills, complete with Average Joe names and avatars.

If that's not blatant shilling then I don't know what is.

I can't wait for "Sony and Nintendo do it too" to become the next talking point after everyone's tired of "It's just like Steam" and "Welcome to the future".

I agree. I really hate this "defense". Sure, it's possible, but I haven't seen it yet from Sony and Nintendo, and I doubt they would do this in this scale and this blatant. Microsoft is on a whole different level.

I'm about 200% sure Ninty will never pull DRM on used games. Sony is 1/4 of that percentage right now. I'm hoping like hell.

you're kinda hopping on the bandwagon as well, no? i mean no where in that article does it even refute the original poster, it's entire foundation rests on someone who "chimed in". that's suspicious as hell.

i mean i don't need someone to tell me it's happening. it's obvious. it's been happening all around us for the last decade. i've caught companies doing it all over the time, just never have i found an outlet to talk about it. for someone like microsoft, getting ready to release "always online" console, keeping their reputation managed online is just so obvious. they're not putting their shareholders first if they don't do it

I somewhat don't get the surprise here.

Do people think there aren't posters on places like reddit, GAF, and other forums who are affiliated with big companies like Sony, MS, Nintendo, EA, etc.?

What those people say and do is another matter, but there have to be people at these companies who aren't so out of touch and actually read what people are saying in popular sites.

LOL. I wonder if these sleeper agents have activation chip on them. On that note, I find it annoying that we have to deal with a batch of new members just a few days before E3. This kind of situation doesn't help obviously but I'm also concerned about the server load during E3 conferences.

Your reverse psychology won't work on me.

Err..ummm...I mean. Xbone is the bom dawg! Those haters is just hatin cuz, cuz, well cuz theys haterz! Everyone wants an Xbone for Christmas...even yo dawg. No not you dawg, though he want one too, but yo dog. Yeah even the canine wants one. And I do not work for M$ so you know Iz legit!

I don't have a problem with people affiliated with big companies being on web forums. People have jobs, that's life. People paid to market a product while hiding their affiliation is something I find much more questionable.
