Really? I'm not saying it's happening, but MS has over 50 billion in cash on hand

The xbox one itself has to be profitable. it can't rob money from Office or Windows to compete with Sony, Microsoft is on record saying a money losing venture like the OG xbox is off the table.

on top of that, 50 billion sounds like a lot until you realize Microsoft is currently fighting off Google (who also has 50 billion on hand) and Apple (who has twice that) in the Office/Desktop/Phone space, which is their primary business.

MS spending themselves into a victory here is a fantasy. they can't afford it.

To be fair, well, yeah. Failure tells you what you shouldn't do. Success doesn't.

success tells you what to keep doing. but you have to have the right questions.

It is perfectly possible MS went 'well, 360 was a huge success. People love XBL gold. I know, lets make sure everyone can enjoy the benefits of XBL gold by mandating internet connection. People will love us!'

I read the OP just now, got the jist of it but I'm not going to read another 48 pages. Can anyone summarise anything else please?

The only real development since has been BLR informing us that he has one third party source saying Gold required to play games... at least that's how I interpreted it. So another layer of paywall bullshit between you and the games you bought to rent.

Activision didn't push for this, they haven't introduced any DRM stuff this gen. They're probably smart enough to realize that used game trade-ins helps people buy COD titles and they're less worried about their own games being sold/traded-in due to longtail DLC map packs.

Eh, the near-total value of CoD is online-based, including all of its DLC. Activision's big games are all online-required, like Starcraft II, Diablo III, WoW...even for just single player. Acti-Blizz is just used to online-only as DRM.

From A1right: oh shit.

now to translate

Quote:
1. Confirmed Microsoft is actively attempting to get developers to not mention PS4 versions. If they don't say "OUR GAME IS EXCLUSIVE FOR XBONE" expect a PS4 version. #truthfact

2. More DRM messaging at Gamescom. There is no rental strategy. Try to sweep it under the rug and hope people don't remember.

3. Cloud power was designed as DRM. Period. DRM was Microsoft's idea. EA and Ubisoft are supporters, Activision slightly less so.

4. DRM plans are actually worse than what they've stated.

5. Mirror's Edge 2 at MS conference.

6. Prince of Persia (reboot?) at MS conference.

7. Secret Phil Spencer game = World of Tanks

8. Live paywall still there.

9. Dead Rising 3, and exclusive DLC for another Capcom game at MS conference.

10. No online paywall for PS4. Unconfirmed.

11. No DRM info for PS4.

CBoaT shall float us to the motherland.

Yeah WTF is going on here?

Following on from CBOAT "it gets worse" comment on DRM, BruceLeeRoy confirmed he has heard from a TP source that Microsoft were essentially planning a system whereby your games are tied to your gold account, and when XBLG expires, so to does your ability to play your games.

Last we heard, BruceLeeRoy was waiting to clarify this with CBOAT and maybe a few others.

3. Major Nelson is like an affable muscular guy in spandex putting on a show. Be nice to him. Spandex can chaff.

Think what he is saying is that Al Snow was a jobber, his job was to make the other wrestlers look good, so Major Nelson is a jobber since his job is making MS look good

On an off note, I always imagine Cboat to look something like this:

Yeah I think the Xbox One having all this DRM and features that have nothing to do with gaming is Microsoft going after their real competitors Apple, and Google. Both have similar functions out or coming out with Apple TV and such. Sony is their game competitor but Microsoft is trying to use their reputation and home familiarity with the Xbox brand to get a leg up on Google and Apple.

There is absolutely NO way that those games tied to Gold rumor has any credence to it. I know we all thought that about always online, but this is a new level of insanity.

Nothing's going on here. The whole 'you need gold' thing is just further speculation on cboat's rumour(s).

Oh, ok then, thanks for clearing that up.

You heard the man people, nothing to see here, close up shop and go preorder your Xbox One today at your local Gamestop!

Yeah... I keep hearing that over and over again. And it keeps being wrong each time.

You know someone would defend it. I wonder where the line is.

He is doing the opposite of defending it. Put down yer pitchfork.

the rumor is coming from a poster with a good track record. (Bruceleeroy).

we're missing a lot of data, but saying there is NO credence to it is false.

I didn't really care about the DRM stuff, but Live Gold being required to basically use the console in any manner is fucking bananas. I hope that doesn't end up being the case.

Thanks guys. Well, I'm taking it with a huge grain of salt, but if that's true, I will be utterly speechless. I've been vocal against MS for the most part.

Hey, I don't want to believe this either. But my cynicism, based on what we know so far, combined with cboat's hint, leave me to think this really could be true.

He say to not put faith on it yet since he has only heard it from ONE source.

how does that contradict what I said? One source gave him the info, and that poster is reliable. If there was ZERO credibility to it I doubt it would have been brought up.

it's nowhere near 100 percent fact, but saying Bruce has no credibility when his sources have been repeatedly legitimate is wrong.

Imagine you had lots of information to get out there. But the people who wanted to keep that info secret constantly Googled the interwebs to make sure it didn't leak. How could you post it to the NeoGAF without it getting picked up by Google?
Oh, so this is the CBOAT person that was mentioned in other thread? Thanks for the explanation, I had no idea why the OP was written that way.

Yeah. I normally don't post stuff unless I am hearing it from a lot of sources but this is only coming from one direction. I would take it with a grain of salt, no point in hating on MS for something not confirmed but I know for a fact CBOAT has access to a lot more information and he knows there is a slice of further crap that hasn't been added to this shite pie yet.

Could this be what he was referencing? Possibly but no one is telling me yes.

on the drm stuff.

from thinking over night- i posted about it but gaf moves so fast it got lost in the shuffle

microsoft SEEMS to be treating a console game EXACTLY how they treat Software for Computers.

however did not a law DEFINE what a console game is to allow rental and resale vs computer software?

to me the Xbox One is NOT a Games Console.

It is a Dedicated Media Computer that can Play Games .

I build a media computer, toss in a hard drive, toss in a Bluray player, get a decent case,
get one of the Good media player backbones running (xmpc or whatever) and then to play pc games i have to install the game, activate a key, i cannot resell the game, i cannot rent the game, i cannot loan out the game, etc. all this is what the Xbox One -supposedly- does now.

all microsoft did was make a specific SPEC and are marketing it as a games console.

i HOPE sony - first 5 minutes of the conference.

1) shows the console
2) says, you want to loan the game to a friend, you can, no mandatory installs, no online requirement, game rentals will work fine-exactly as they currently do. no extraneous fees required.
3) price of ~350-400.
between MS and Sony, the winner- almost by default would be Sony after that 5 minutes

and oh HEY i'm a member now wonder when that happened, yay me..

XBL gold to maintain licences of games bought at retail? If this isn't a troll, Microsoft is desperately out of touch and will lose the gen.

There's around 40-45 mil Live accounts total, between silver and gold. Around 25 mil are gold, IIRC.

ouch. worse than I thought. I thought the 40 million figure was for Gold, not gold and silver.

if only 25 million out of about 77 million units are paying for Gold, requiring it could be devastating. This doesn't make any sense.

I am very sorry... I misread your post.

Please excuse my oversight... and understand I'm sleep deprived.

If all of this plays out as the rumors suggest, I can only imagine the ad campaigns from the competition. Sony should buy back Crash Bandicoot IP just so they can reinvent the old guy in bandicoot suit outside MS HQ yelling at them.

Well Sony, Ubisoft and EA all had their fair share of DRM disaster stories. Just read this for a good laugh. http://kotaku.com/ea-labels-president-calls-drm-a-failed-dead-end-strat-461313335

It's worth noting that what EA's president meant by that was that the name "DRM" has become some what toxic and they'd like to dress the concept up a bit, maybe put it in a nice suit before they sent it out to kill your gaming experience again, see also SimCity and "The Infinite Power of the Cloud".

I'm sure there's been some sort of misinterpretation - it will most likely be similar to how ps plus free games no longer work if you don't re subscribe... Except by the sounds of it this will include discounted digital downloads - which I assume will be cheaper than retail prices...

Either that or Microsoft have truly lost the plot entirely and should be admitted to a mental asylum

I remember when companies used to set out to make a really good, appealing product. Then people would buy that product and the company would get rich.

What happened?
