Nintendo Direct E3 2013 Presentation

SoulPlaya

more money than God
I wonder if this conference would be considered better if they never announced mario 3d, mario kart, and ssb in previous nintendo direct. I thought the conference was great. These games will move units and in the long run will be better for the company. + new news is still supposed to be coming. I thought the conference also had more of the few games throughout the whole e3 that looked fun and new. (this was a attack more towards titan fall which looked mostly like COD with mechs)
It didn't matter if they announced it before or not. Everyone knows they're coming. Everyone assumed we would be seeing Mario, Mario Kart, and Smash this E3, before they ever said anything about them.

Maybe it's because I didn't buy a Wii U yet, or because I went in with realistic expectations and not "Retro is making Star Tropics: First Blood" because I seriously don't know why people are acting like it was terrible outside of the streaming issues. I can see some disappointment that Retro is only making an amazing sequel to an amazing game instead of an amazing original game, or that Mario isn't some crazy new thing we all imagined in our heads, but terrible?

And outside of Mario 3D World's camera and visual style based on the design of a handheld game, I don't really get the "everything they showed is just a glorified handheld title!" meme either.

Everything was safe and predictable. Everything.

Smash showed no new gameplay that differentiates it from previous games, and only showing 2 new characters. DKC:TF looks just like the last one with new camera angles. Mario 3D World looks just like Mario 3D Land, except with multiplayer and choice of characters. Mario Kart was the most creative game from the main Nintendo studios. If Mario Kart is your most innovative, then something is wrong.

Will the games be fun? Yes. But is this disappointing? Yes.

What shocked me about this press conference is zero word on a price cut or a bundle for the Wii U. Absolutely nothing. You would think with how the system is selling across the world right now they would try to do at least something in that regard, but nope.

You'd think seeing how copying the same shit from the Wii without effort doesn't work would change their direction. Instead, Iwata just keeps going with this shit, even dragging Retro and EAD Tokyo in the mud and then doesn't even change the price.

No idea wth he/they are thinking, really. This thing would have needed a proper relaunch with new price and games that don't look exactly like their predecessors. Who's going to buy this for an underwhelming 3D Mario and Wii Fit in winter for only 50$ less than a PS4?

Skiesofwonder

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
The biggest WTF was the complete failure to justify the Gamerpad. AGAIN. Hell, Mario Kart 8 and Mario Land 3D barely even use the damn thing outside of off-tv play and miiverse. Third Parties are using the Gamerpad better then Nintendo is. It's pretty sad honestly.

That said, I'll be buying all of Pikimin 3, Wonderful 101, Tropical Freeze, and Mario Land 3D World this year alongside Rayman Legends, Lost World, and Walking_Dogs because I know they will end up being awesome software. 2014 also looks pretty awesome first-party wise for WiiU.

Just saw the Nintendo Direct.
-Wish they would have dropped some megatons.
-The 3D Mario isn't the most innovative Mario title, but it looks real fun to play.
- Mega Man in SSB was cool to see.
- X continues to look great.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
Its because you don't own a Wii u yet. You didn't have to put up with this launch. Wait until the price drops and when the games you are interested in are out.
I bought a WiiU at launch and I share EmCeeGramr's opinion.

This ND had two major problems:

1. The ultra shitty stream. Seriously, nintendo, swap the goddamed provider.
2. The absence of Retro's new IP. While I do believe they've helped tremendously with the new DK, I can't fathom that's all they did in the given timespan.

Everything else 1st party was pretty much a day-1 for me. Also, unexpected 3rd party highlights:

* Duck Tales
* Scram Kitty
* Oddworld

dude, whats wrong with donkey kong

Donkey Kong is fine, but just fine. It will be a great game, DKCR was fantastic, but the platform is already oversaturated with 2D platformers and not much else, another one isn't really helping 1st party diversity.

It didn't even have to be a new Metroid game, maybe even some new IP, everything but Donkey Kong. Really, maybe it's because I'm overall disappointed with the showing, with nothing new out of ordinary, with the terrible direction chosen for 3D Mario, I'm more disillusioned by Nintendo than I ever were. Even a year ago I could always sustain myself on a promise of what's to come. Now? Retro stuck on DK is disappointing, 3D Mario is in no way what I wanted to follow on from Galaxies, Zelda won't be out until hm, 2015? Everything on the horizon is gone. Sigh.

in that interview Geoff K. really hit the nail on the head:

"You keep going back to the Well"

They just have to change it up

For every one saying "But we got a 3D Mario, Mariokart, AND SMASH" they will be great games but really at this point Nintendo is becoming Formulaic.

The developer interviews make the whole selection of games look much better.

BTW: Anyone else now having this new-found desire to see Sakurai develop a Mega Man game? It can't just be me.

The worst part of all this is the fact that Nintendo used to be a fucking creative POWERHOUSE.

Now they're nothing. They're shit. Incompetence to the highest level of its decision making staff. Fucking get Iwata the fuck out NOW. Everything a rehash. Everything a sequel. Not one fucking ounce of creativity left at this company. My Wii U has been off since at LEAST January (probably December), and there is not one single goddamn reason to turn it on for the rest of 2013.

I think they have a fantastic first party lineup, I am really pleased that I own both a Wii U and a 3DS. A multiplayer 3D Mario, Mario Kart and a new Donkey Kong Country are exactly the kind of games I want to play and X should be fantastic.

That said, third party support for the Wii U is officially dead. The few multiplats it's getting look like they are there almost just out of pity. Having Deus Ex HR in a highlights montage is just sad.

The real disappointment is that this years releases is a graveyard. Rehashes at least would be content people can buy. almost everything shown was next years. wii fit, something that sounds like a gimme is delayed no doubt to space out releases. Zelda remake thrown in there cuz hell needed something and Zelda OoT has been remade a few too many times

Bowing and asking for patience said it all. Early adopters got fucked. This is N64 level without awesome Mario 64

Any of you guys see Geoff Keighley's interview with Reggie earlier, cause damn he asked some hard hitting questions just like last year.

it was deserved, reggie squirmed.

geoff trying to pepper the entire show with "this could be played with any controller/maybe going 3rd party" got old.

although, i agree with the negative sentiment that nintendo themselves seem to not understand the machine they built. i can't believe we havent heard anything about NFC and were this far into the life of the device. a poke rumble title in japan is it.

what new game even uses the pad well or demonstrates its useful?

the tablet add in junk was everywhere, nintendo has it built in yet shows nothing that really utilized that feature at all.

the multiple shows and confusing messaging. the booth show turning into a town hall conference. an empty "retailers" meeting at the nokia theater that seemed to be largely populated with JP developers, oddly enough, if twitter was any guide.

i applaud them for trying something different but it really did feel like, its not enough to show and lets phone it in by going straight to the fans. pure servicing, look... mario in a cat suit. which yes, i will eat, buy and sleep... but really?

I don't think that is true. Confirming that it is going to be at e3 will definitely affect the "surprise".

On the one hand I can understand the disappointment, on the other hand I'm looking forward to all these games they showed today :/

Yes... this is driving me crazy. I want to be mad at them but I want to buy all the games they showed. Sony killed with PS4 but I just want 4 games for it and 2 of them I do'n even know when will be out...

I think the problem is that there's a pretty big gap between "terrible" and "I must buy a WiiU in 2013", and Nintendo really failed to get close to the latter for many. The most impressive title this year looked to be Mario Kart and I've never been a MK fan so... why buy the console?

edit: whoops MK is next year.

I think a lot of why people are disappointed is their delays when they need games now.

No offense, but 7 games, one of which is a HD port, and another that is DLC featuring remixed levels isn't all that great when you consider the competition.

Geoff eviscerated Reggie on the post conference interview.

Reggie is all like WELL LETS SEE WHAT HAPPENS. Really makes me feel confident about my purchase.

Outside of an affirmative "We don't have 3rd party support, we will never have 3rd party support, you better pack it in and sell your Wii U," what in the world was Reggie supposed to say in that kind of situation? At a certain point, Geoff was just beating the 3rd Party dead horse where he would not be satisfied with any answer Reggie could give apart from "we are so shit."

And yet, despite saying the Wii U had no games and showing a rare moment where a gaming journalist at least attempted to find their balls, he interviews Miyamoto like they're best friends and is like "you guys have SO MANY GAMES here and on the horizon!"

As truthfully dire as the Wii U situation is at the moment, Geoff really only succeed in making himself look like an ass, even more so than when he forcefully cut off the Mega64 guys from talking about Nintendo and when he fostered that "Nintendo should go 3rd Party/develop on iOS" inane discussion later.

I have to admit I was a bit dissapointed with retro studios announcement, as we had been hyping a new game. Mario 3D world seems more like a appetiser game (similar to wind waker hd while we waits for Zelda U) . Hopefully the next open world Super Mario U is announced sometime next year that fully utilises the wii u potential. Monoliths X and Bayonetta's new hair style made me happy but Megaman in smash stole the show.

I really couldn't be any less interested in the direction Nintendo has taken their franchises. It doesn't inspire anger or disappointment in me, only apathy.

Cut back to Geoff asking Reggie "WHY IS THE WII NOT AS POWERFUL, WHY AREN'T DEVS USING THE GAMEPAD MORE" as if Reggie is going to be able to give an answer to that.

Oh yes, given the state of the Wii U right now I completely agree with you it was deserved and it sucks that Reggie just dodged and went into typical PR babble whenever Geoff asked some of the harder questions to him.

It also appears as though they've forgotten to use their own gamepad - something that should be the draw of the system.

Trust me, I WANT to want a WiiU. There just is no compelling reason to right now (personally).

A bit underwhelmed to honest. Usually when a company is hurting the Nintendo is, that's when we begin to see some real innovation. What we saw everyone was expecting, and wasn't going to cause any sort new buzz. At the least I was expecting a sizzle reel with titles that are in the earliest stages of development.

Well, one things for sure. That rumor from last year was clearly bullshit. Why the hell would they pull DKCR2 at the last second?

Yep, I never believed it, but fanboys were using it as justification for such a poor showing.

On another note, I'm really not too surprised by the strong reaction to DKC:TF. To call a spade a spade, I think most of the negative reaction is that Nintendo fans realize that yes, Retro is a talented developer and the Metroid Prime games (and DKCR) are amazing games, but more then that, they see Retro as the last bastion of hope for pure Western developed hardcore games. They want a game that can legitimize Nintendo as "see, we can have Mario, Zelda, Kart, AND this new amazing IP too which you can only play on Wii U!"

The conference was okay for me. Bayonetta and X both look amazing, W101, Smash and Kart look great, and DKC:TF looks good. But I do share in the disappointment of 3D World, since I don't see it as nearly as revelatory as Galaxy was.

Why they decided to skip 3DS entirely for this baffles me.
Its because the 3ds has so many games right now, 3ds owners should be the last to complain I wish you guys had miiverse to see the reaction of Wii u owners. It was bad many have lost faith in this console.

I think someone should post a thread about miiverse Nintendo direct reactions I would but I don't know how to put up screenshots. Literally had a bunch of people say that they wasted their money.

Sweet, GAF is up.

Anyway, seeing all the reactions on the internet makes me, I don't know, feel disconnected with the rest of the gamingworld. I can understand if people weren't blown away by Nintendo's offerings, but reading stuff like "Nintendo's creativity is dead" or "These games seem like blown up 3DS games" is just mindboggeling. My overall impression of E3 is that everyone (Excluding S-E, I mean Kingdom Hearts III was pretty surprising) did exactly what I expected from them. Playing it safe. Everything at the MS, Sony, EA, Ubi pressers; how was that any different than what Nintendo did? Everyone was playing it safe. I think that's my main complaint for this year. Man and that's for a year in which they show new systems. Ugh.

I was a bit bummed out about Retro making DKC TF, but it looks pretty nifty. Smash, Bayo 2, X, The Wonderful 101 had nice trailers. I was really surprised by Mario Kart 8. I'm good.

The only killer app for the GamePad is Miiverse. I don't mean that you should run out and buy a Wii U for Miiverse, but it's far and away the only truly great use of the pad that Nintendo has offered.

lol @ this attitude. Is this because 3D Land debuted on a handheld? It is using the similar style of gameplay as 3D Land and expanding upon it.

Let me categorize it for you:

SM64/SMS, SMG/SMG2, SM3DLand/SM3DWorld

This has nothing to do with the origins of the first game. I love handheld gaming. It's just that mainline Marios on consoles have always had a fresh new twist that felt grand in scope. This is a sequel to a spinoff, with multilayer added. Come on. It can't compare with the reveals for 64/Sunshine/Galaxy. Totally different leagues.

I'm even more afraid that they consider this a mainline mothership 3D Mario game. I don't even know anymore.

Do we have directs soon or are they at least planning to reveal more stuff over the next few days? I'm sure this game will be great but passing it off as WiiU's tentpole Mario game is so fucking ridiculous.

Nintendo fans used to bitch about other console makers doing nothing but sequels, but now they have to try and pretend to be excited about Mario 3DS on Wii U, Mario Kart 8, or another side scrolling DK. Times are certainly different.

And this is supposed to be "Panic Mode" Nintendo? Jesus, I'd hate to see them in a dominant position.

I think that is what genuinely annoys me about that. The one time (or should I say, one person) a gaming journalist decides to start pressing the hard-hitting questions, he does it to a well-known figure-head who both completely lacks substantive control over the gripes that Geoff has and who is specifically meant to take the brunt of the flak. It's like declaring victory because you attacked the entirely wrong person.

But let's continue to blast the guy for things that he is not realistically going to answer or can address, but immediately act super-friendly and softball the guy with probably the most pull in the company next to Iwata (and then cut back to Reggie interviews).

No offence taken. I'm a big Nintendo fan so I see the negative stuff too. Bit I feel that they have some good looking games that are high quality that are coming out one after another. Its pretty much one game or more each month from now onwards. And when you think about that coming from Nintendo alone pretty much that is pretty darn good. They don't want to cannibalize their own games by releasing multiple each month.

I obviously want to see more. I wanted Mario Kart 8 for November alongside 3D World but all things considered I'm going to be busy with at least one high quality Nintendo game each month without even including the 3DS. Seems okay to me. Could be better. Could be worse.

I do wonder if nintendo are on the pulse of gamers or Nintendo fans. They operate in a bubble where trends dont seem to matter.

Nice to see NeoGAF is finally back.

The only thing that really got me excited in the Direct was Mega Man. Other than that, I thought Mario 3D World looked really awesome but my enthusiasm for that game is dampened by the fact that Nintendo is using the bullshit Blue Toad again (and calling him Toad) instead of just using..I don't know.. the actual character named Toad.

FxIOrg5.png

I loved Mario 3D Land, but bullshit is bullshit. I'm a fan of the series first and foremost, and in this series there is a character named Toad (Kinopio in Japan, he has a name that makes him separate from the regular Toads) that Nintendo likes to ignore lately.

It wouldn't be a problem if they had great 3rd party support. Without that, you have to rely on Nintendo's output. With that in mind, and considering the competition, one good to great game a month isn't all that good. Hell, it's pretty bad, especially considering that the fall to winter months is usually jampacked with great games on other consoles. You just don't have the variety on the Wii U. I mean, what if I'm not interested in W101? That's it, then.

At the very least, you could argue that it's a good companion console to XOne/PS4, but at its current price point, I don't see it. For $50 more, I could pick up a PS4.

I only have one disappointment: NO MOTHERSHIP, NEW MARIO

Mario 3D World looks like a sequel to 3D Land. I'm sure it'll be fun, but can you guys seriously say it gave you the same feeling of a fresh, new Mario that you got when looking at trailers for Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy?

We're getting spin-off Mario games which is great, but not if we're not gonna have a proper follow-up to mothership Mario games.

SMG2 is a spin-off of Mario Galaxy in my opinion. I'm still waiting on the true console successor to Galaxy.

I was highly disappointed by the whole thing. Every game Minus DKC was previously announced. They only real OMG MEGATON MOMENT was Megaman in Smash.
Sure theres games in there that I'll buy, especially X. But for the most part, the magical moments in a typical E3, bombs being dropped left in right, were gone.
Whats more is that it was all 2014, 2014, 2014. And Yeah, I'll buy the titles coming out in the fall. But to the average consumer, there's really no point to invest in a Wii U.
They showed off their Third Party games, no surprise Multiplats, all were previously known as Wii U hitters.
I came in to the Conference pretty underwhelmed given all the years before, I just because I wanted to be proven wrong. I was hoping for Panic mode Nintendo to shine through with hit after hit after hit. Taking risks left and right, and being afraid of nothing. Instead I go "Man, working in HD is tough guys. Give us more time. In the meantime, heres upressed models and areas from games you just played last year and the year before on our other systems. Please understand"
Whats more, is the interview with Reggie, which gives me little faith as a consumer. Was essentially "We've got plenty of games coming out for Wii U that'll get new owners in there....December 2015."
Idk how they can look at the E3 Miiverse, and not see the disappointment all around, sans a few super blind fanboys.

Plinko

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
The games look good but it's time for something new. I was just majorly disappointed that we didn't get one new IP. Not one. That's all I want.

I think my major problem is that they cram all the "Nintendo-y" stuff together at once. Why not spread these out and throw some old IPs in there as well? I mean, we can't get an F-Zero? Another Monster Games racer?

The baffling decisions to keep delaying games and not having anything ready means Iwata needs to go.

And why is Super Mario 3D Land a spin-off? It is a 3D Mario and this is a 3D Mario. They are all mainline 3D Mario games. I don't understand why you are trying to compare the "reveals". The whole Direct was super lacklustre in revealing games. It was terribly paced. They really were underwhelming compared to every other reveal including Super Mario 3D Land. You claim this has nothing to do with handheld gaming yet are saying new mainline console Mario games have a new twist. This has everything to do with origins. If you got the 3D Land style of gameplay on the Wii U first, you would say anything at all.

Nintendo needs a single, combined handheld/console system or they need to acquire some studios immediately. They do not have the resources to sustain two 3D platforms, one being in HD.
