Xbox One DRM policy changes waited on gamers knowing “complete story”

Finally, Whitten could not give any reassurance that Microsoft will not change its policies in the future.

How did VG247 arrive to that conclusion

From that?

"Finally" as in, in addition to. They said one thing in quotes, and then decided to say another thing, but not in quotes.

So that's why they're telling you to download a patch when you buy the Xbone. Makes sense for them to turn dem DRM switches on.

Wow. Really sounds like gamers are losing out, according to VG24/7. Maybe it was all a mistake! What if we don't know what's good for us? :(

No, we knew about them before. Granted the family plan details were unknown because Microsoft wouldn't answer shit. Still, I'm surprised at how many people are just a-okay with buying a Xbox 180 now. I don't have much faith in them as a company to not reinstate shitty policies nor do I trust their vision of 'the future.'

One definitely does not = the other.
And if they had more you would assume that they would put it in the story.
But, as you have witnessed over the past months the MS mouth pieces have a habit of giving non answers to direct questions so they may have just not answered when asked directly.

Because the Polygon dude asked for a guarantee or assurance that they wouldn't change the policy back, and he was fed a PR line about what they currently do. That means no assurance that they won't change it back.

“There are our policies and we are really excited about them. By adding them we have shown that we are definitly listening,” he said.

I really love this sentence. Being excited about motherfucking policies and all.

And adding things!, when you're actually striking them off the board.

Amazing.

Absolutely not, just like they would never change it in the first place no sir.
Not the same. The backlash pressured them to change. A change back to it would cause an even bigger backlash. There's absolutely no benefit for them to do it at this point. If they had a long term plan to change back to it, they'd stick with it. The "trojan horse" analogy doesn't work.

I'm one of the few people stoked over this news. I'd love to opt-in to always online to gain some family share goodness.

No way they would just flip the switch back on after all this shit. You're going to have to opt in.

What I dont get is why those features arent still in when it comes to digital copies....
There is no reason to take them out

Remember. Anybody supporting this company always gets more than they hope for.

Yeah, really makes no sense why they couldn't have kept this for those buying the digital versions through the MS store.

For physical disc, they could have just disabled the feature to scan the game and make it digital (thus also fore-fitting the sharing/cloud stuff). That way physical could also do offline. This screams to me like MS was either exaggerating what the plan could do, or publishers rejected this model.

Microsoft's arrogance during all this has been so pathetic. They've been on the wrong path for 3-4 years now and this doesn't change hardly anything considering they are still more expensive and cram Kinect down your throat.

I'm very happy to see them reverse their DRM stance and it assures I will be getting one when it's cheaper though.

WOW--can't assure us they won't change policies again?

So there's a possibility they could screw people over AFTER they've bought it? Please. I was actually considering buying this thing one day down the road. Goodbye to that thought.

Remember that is market is fairly fluid...I think that they will implement game sharing with the opt-in check-in DRM as a rider down the road. But it represents a much better value for the consumer if it is a choice, not compulsory. I promise you EVERY company will have similar fine-print about their policies, and as such, trying to hang Microsoft by that postscript is somewhat hypocritical.

You know I'd be ok with that. Give people the choice and the option.

They are still fucking lying to your face while asking for $500.

They waited on pre-orders. They waited on E3.

THEY CANCELED ALL E3 INTERVIEWS SO YOU WOULDN'T KNOW THE FULL STORY.

Do not believe their lies.

Always online is for games like TitanFall that use their cloud services.

The only time online is actually required is to activate the system. After that it is dependent on the game.

So now it's confirmed not to be always online after the backlash?

Wonder how many more bullet points on Sony adverts in newspapers they will counter after the fact lol.

HEY I WANT MY $6 Day 1 Halo 5/Battlefield 4 due to 10 Family Shared Plan

DAMMIT GAF, YOU RUIN EVERYTHING

THANKS FOR NOTHING!

So no more sharing games with friends and making nice little savings :/

This is so funny but so hard. I love MS and no DRM seriously has me considering ore ordering a Xbox One. However I just can't. With comments not guranteing policies will change in future and the fact that they even tried to pull this shit means I'm still siding with Sony. Better luck next time MS.

So let your stock drop so consumers can hear the whole story, right? It really shows what MS really thinks of consumers when they make up stuff like this to cover their ass.

I don't believe for a second that the family sharing thing was planned all along, seemed like a knee jerk reaction to the DRM debacle.

MS is scrambling.

Hmm...you know I can completely see MS doing a quick patch job of this whole "Family Plan Sharing" thing after the backlash of E3 and the calling them out on a lack of advantages they kept alluding to knowing full well they were going to do a reversal at that point. The suddenness and lack of details on the sharing plan that seemingly would be worse for them and publishers at face value just seemed like one of those BS quick made up things that would never come true and now with this reversal makes sense as a sort of parent or someone making shit up to guilt trip you thing "Well I WASSSSS going to take you to Disney World but you were acting like a little shit so now forget it"

All of this together makes MS look like such a douche of a company. If I wanted a guilt trip or made to feel bad I can call my mom MS, don't need that shit from you.

Don't you get it? Microsoft installed that rootkit DRM on computers without asking. Who knows the kind of evil they're capable of!

Sony paid for that fuckup dearly. Both with the class action lawsuit and lost sales. Don't you think they learned their lesson already?

I still laugh whenever people quote "rootkit" to make Microsoft look like saints in comparison.

If you want to talk about evil deeds done in the past, let's remember Netscape, the DOS long con on IBM, the DBLSPACE debacle, and the Linux FUD campaign in the 90s. And yes, these things did impact consumers A LOT in the long run.

Even nowadays, they repeatedly get fines from EU for repeated anti-consumer practices.

So they wanted to make sure everyone thought the XBO sounded as awful as possible before making it sound a little better? Yep, makes sense.

With mandatory kinect yeah i am worried who knows how many back doors there are on the X1. While i have no problems with kinect sending data while playing a kinect or better with kinect game. I dont want that camera connected if im playing a non kinect game.
Microsoft build in NSA backdoors in windows 98 or so. Not sure if they are still in the later versions

But lets not forget that other companies like sony for instance rootkit cd pull that shit too.
Ea with origin not sure if that was confirmed or busted. How origin scanned your files on your pc. There are hundreds more of those stunts.

So yeah not giving confirmation about not changing this DRM policy is logically over 20 years people could use it against you.

Hell sony can't even confirm that the specs on the specs sheet are the specs you will get at launch. Historically seen most consoles at launch get a down clock probably to supply demand better.

Top Sony fanboys complain when Microsoft announced both the introduction and the removal of the One's DRM policies. YOUDABES!

It's one thing to be a fanboy because you like a certain company's console or IP's over another. It's another thing to champion a system and corporation trying to fuck you over. I use to love listening to Cheapy D and the CAcast, but after this I'm starting to wonder about him.

Also, they removed family sharing. The one thing attracting me to the system in any way.

Next story: Microsoft mandates all games use The Cloud.

I do like the idea that Microsoft put forth they're original plan with the intention of showing what could be. There were some good aspects to the plan.
