Question: Is the 24 hour online check still in place for digital games? Based on the wording of MS's statement, that certainly seems to be the case.

Microsoft said:
After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again.

This is good news for consumers. We have the backlash and Sony to thank for this.

What would the point of that be? If you can't give your digital games away, there wouldn't be a reason to do that, and if you could, you'd have to be online to do so, so your license could be revoked accordingly.

at least things are back to normal around here. the MS haters really always hated MS anyway regardless of their policies/ But now people who actually ARE interested in One with this reversal can talk about it again and be interested like normal

People who hate Microsoft always hated Microsoft #truthfact

It is pretty significant and it has not sunk in just yet, i was getting both on launch but for them to make a complete reversal that shortly after E3 is significant.

I am glad

Not surprising news, but: http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57590170-75/microsoft-has-no-plans-to-revisit-xbox-ones-$499-price/

Microsoft may have just backtracked on its derided policy that had restricted game sharing in its Xbox One console that goes on sale later this year -- but don't count on the company to revisit other unpopular features of the upcoming console.

In an interview with CNET, Marc Whitten, the chief product officer for Xbox, said the company has "no plans" to lower the $499 price tag for the console, even though Sony's rival PlayStation 4 will debut at $399. He echoed previous statements from the company that the Xbox One will offer features not found elsewhere, such as its Kinect motion-sensing, voice-detecting controller.

"We are really, really excited about the value we're going to deliver on day one," Whitten said.

What's more, Microsoft has no plans to change its decision for the Kinect to be on by default, something some users worry might be creepy. Microsoft tried to diffuse some of those privacy concerns earlier this month, telling gamers that the system is "only listening for the single voice command -- 'Xbox On.'" But gamers can turn that feature off if they choose.

Of course who knows what they're going to do anymore.

What? They claimed you only had to go on once with a new console.

A couple of Capcom PSN games this gen have had always-online DRM. As you say, there is no obvious point to this, as you can trade or resell these games, but the DRM was there none the less.

The incentive is not losing more people, especially people who haven't even heard about what's going on yet.
And some of my boycotts are definitely of the "You fucked up and you're never getting my money again no matter what you do. Just wanted to let you know." variety. Papa John's is one of those.

Fair enough, but for me personally, this one isn't quite in that category. Close, but not quite.

I can understand how others may feel differently, however. MS always has been a pretty shitty company and one of the worst bullies in the corporate world. I definitely don't have a good feeling about them myself. But at the same time, the idea that Sony might be able to totally dominate this generation of consoles is also kind of scary, and nintendo doesn't seem to be putting up much of a fight. Arrogance and a lack of competition is what leads to these kinds of power-grabs, along with price gouging and other stuff that isn't good for anybody.

To be honest, I'm glad they reverted, but frankly it would be very easy to do the Bluray version of a videogame.

You pay $60, you get a digital copy code that ties to your console/account forever, you can download it whenever. You can trade the physical copy (which needs to be in the drive) away, sell it, whatever. Those people just don't get a digital copy.

Every consumer possible is happy, everyone is happy.

Now they need to reduce the price by 100 bucks. But even then, I'm not buying one; for me it's the winning Nintendo/Sony formula again.

Welp, PS4 for me then. Sorry Microsoft. I have no interest in Kinect as a forced option in my living room. Heck, I only have 8 foot of space between my television and foot of the couch.

I don't understand this. They gave people what they wanted, right? Why shouldn't they be praised for their change of heart?

Should be taken with a pinch of salt, how long till they try this stunt again?

We all know what MS wanted and if it wasn't for SONY or all of us, they would have gotten away with it.

Yea, thank you MS for changing your policies ( but I got my eyes on you)

My hope is they toss Kinect to a stand-alone add on as it is now, or at least offer a Kinectless bundle, for $399. Then they'd really be cooking. I don't see it happening, but they seem to have been caught off-guard by the PS4 price, so who knows.

Higher price with weaker and harder to use hardware which will no doubt translate into worse looking third party games, great combination. I don't know how they can make this thing a sales success without releasing a Kinect free SKU for $399 or less.

That like somebody braking into your house in the middle of the night and then apologizing only after you catch them in the act and threaten to beat their ass.

Fucker shouldn't get credit for the apology. He shouldn't have been their in the first place!

Is this the biggest company eating it's own crow ever? This is something to be embarrassed for the rest of your life especially with all the previous PR talk about not changing and consumers will get use to it, etc, etc, and E3 conference. The fact that they are still trying to spin it like it was meant to be instead of flat out admitting their mistakes makes the whole change laughable, good but laughable.

Digital games aren't really an option if you never go online. So I think that is all that means.

It confirms slightly further down the message they can be played offline:

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

Because as many speculated, it wasn't for the "right" reason and more to do with the pre-order numbers

So? It should be about the games anyway. If a system has the games you want to play then you should buy it.

OH boy. You guys are really taking this DRM thing too seriously. It is not like rape like that one guy said and it is not like a someone breaking into your house.

No doubt. But still, it's a positive change for those that preferred the traditional console system.

Should be taken with a pinch of salt, how long till they try this stunt again?

As long as it takes for both Sony and Microsoft to come to a mutual agreement on enforced policies. Even before we learned about each console's DRM plans, everyone was saying that there's no way only one of these companies would bite the bullet and kill used games. That proved true, but I'm certain that these plans have been postponed. At some point both Sony and Microsoft will go down that road, as proven by the necessity to pay for online play on both platforms.

No, they were walking down the street outside your house saying, "Yo, I'm going to break into your house." You told them you wouldn't like them to break into your house and they said, "Ok, I'm not going to break into your house."

Stop acting like this thing came out and screwed people over. It didn't. They pitched a product. People didn't like the pitch, so they changed the product before releasing it.

So are there game installs to hard drive or not? If so, then what stops me from trading this disc in after I install it to my hard drive? Is it going to do a disc check every time you launch the game? They were not clear in their wording, so I will hold my judgment until they clarify or until after launch. The fact that they can't confirm they wont change their policy after people buy the console is enough to keep me away. Sony has already come out and said they won't be changing it.

I still don't see why he would say "one time setup" if it had nothing to do with internet.... considering they always had a one time setup for every game in existence for a couple generations.

All disc-based games install to the hard drive. A disc is required to play them.

The initial setup requires an online connection.

This is what I'd like to see, simply because I have no interest in Kinect. When they stop trying to sell me hardware I do not want, they will be more likely to have me as a customer.

I'm still pro sony but seeing as PS+ is now mandatory, if Microsoft can just lower that price point I will jump ship to the XBone.

I think the initial setup is just flashing the firmware when you get the console. I'm guessing they already have too many of those chips made to re-flash all of them now.

Who gives a shit? We got what we want.

I don't understand. This is an internet forum, where we discuss things. It's great that MS is reversing it's policies! This will lead to a change in purchases for many people.

The talking point is that MS is portraying themselves as sympathetic to the consumer, hearing what they had to say (which obviously wasn't on their Youtube comments), and they made the choice do what was right. Which to a lot of people (including me) is absolute crapola. They would have weathered the bad publicity all the way to November if their preorder numbers were strong.

Not really hard to see why we're talking about that.

Microsoft didn't change this because people wanted them to. The only reason they changed their policy is because the preorders were selling like shit and they freaked out over all the negative publicity that was gaining traction in the media. They've already shown they didn't give a shit when concerns over this were going on before and even shortly after e3. I don't see how anyone could trust Microsoft again after all of this.
