I was a day one 3DO buyer. And the way of the Warrior was one of 3 games that I played. The other was a Gex port (I believe) the last..... um.. I don't remember.

Man, I thought the 3DO was going to rule the world!

I remember going to the local store and playing it on a kiosk they had set up. I used to beg my dad to buy one, but he said $700 was way too much.

It's the only time I can look back on and be glad I grew up poor.

who has that job now? Adam Boyes?

PS2 also had very decent third party support. Even if the game was multi platform, the PS2 had features other consoles didn't get.

Not a single EA Sports game had Xbox LIVE support until 2004, and the Tony Hawk series only had online play on the PS2 until 2005. There was also the face importing option.

does Boyes also handle 3rd party relationship with japanese developer? I really want to know their Vita strategy.. :(

I know western publisher don't care about handheld market, so I understand going after indies for their western handheld strategy, but I was hoping we have more jp vita titles in development, and localization too.

Sony should build up a portfolio of first party titles to cater to gamers in the west, similar to what Nintendo is doing with the 3DS.

He works for Sony now.

No, he is still technically not a Sony employee. He said it during the keynote. He explains that he prefers it that way, as he does not have to worry about the business side of things and can focus solely on making the best system that he can.

God, that must be nice. You get to build the future and not worry about paperwork and whining employees and shit. Cerny livin' the dream.

I wonder if he ends up getting snatched now that he's exposed and in the mainstream news. Not that a person that look for these types of people wouldn't have known about him in the PS1-2 days but now he's probably at the top of the list. Did Microsoft get the wrong guy (Phil Harrison)? Now that's one guy that I didn't know much about, maybe Europe people can enlighten us. He was said to be around since the beginning too, yet he's not in the 3 musketeers pic. Maybe he's a dude bro with Ken?

This is not really related to Cerny or anything, but to be honest with you I never really saw that Sony lost much in Phil Harrison considering that Yoshida filled his place.

Phil also went to Atari/Infrogrames for a few years before going to MS I believe, so you could also probably say that MS picked him up from there instead.

I was thinking the same thing. If things go south for Microsoft, who knows, they might bathe him in gold to get him to their side. Though Microsoft seems quite comfortable with the choices they've made with the Xbone (besides that DRM stuff).

I really wish Nintendo would take a few of Mark's words to their heart, third party relationship could only profit from this.
They are making great progress in the indie scene, but I hope they will listen more to third parties' hardware wishes next time.

Nintendo hasn't been the friendliest when it comes to third parties since the Wii. They are now reaping that mistake with the Wii U. I feel like Nintendo will fix it next generation definitely (it might be too late this generation as the Wii U is fundamentally flawed hardware wise).

Sony's executive team is fantastic, Cerny, House, Yoshida, Boyes, Rohde, all amazing. I can't wait to see how the PS4 generation unfold, I get the feeling it's going to be Sony's best generation yet.

don't think this is going to happen.

a) He owns his own company, he's not gonna abandon that after 15 years to work as an MS emplyee

b) He's been working with Sony for almost 15 years and

c) He considers himself one of the 3 musketeers and wants to remain at Sony for at least the next decade or two (as he said in his speech) to fulfill Yoshida's master plan :p

lmao, I just noticed Yoshida updated his twitter description after the Cerny talk: "President of Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment. Managing 1st party game development for PlayStation. Father of twin daughters. Brewing Master Plan."

Edit: someone pointed it out already, of course.

From what we've been seeing it's going to be huge. I'm getting the same feeling back to the age when Blizz were developing and hiring for their WoW team. But on a much larger scale.

but, anyhoo. he uses "time to triangle" to describe how long it takes to code a graphical engine that is representative of the hardware.

A lot of people seem to think this means that games will come out faster than normal - this is also not necessarily true. It just means that an engine can be more easily coded for the PS4 within 1-2 months as opposed to 6-12 months for the PS4. The game still requires however long it would normally take so it won't really speed up that part of the development process.

c) He considers himself one of the 3 musketeers and wants to remain at Sony for at least the next decade or two (as he said in his speech) to fulfill Yoshida's master plan :p

The real important part is that he seems to have developed really good friendships with Yoshida and House so I don't think he'll go to another company just because his job probably isn't much of a job and more of a dream fulfillment. He's probably not hurting for money so enjoyment is most likely the main motivator for Mr. Cerny. In addition, assuming the PS4 is a huge success (it really seems likely at this point), his position will likely be cemented as main architect of future Playstation consoles.

joshcryer

it's ok, you're all right now
What does "time to triangle" mean?

He explained it not as the time to make one triangle appear on the screen, but the time it took to write an engine that could display thousands or millions of triangles in a game engine (not necessarily a fully functioning game engine but one that could load polygonal assets and display them).

Starting from scratch / with just the API tools available.

I don't think you can buy a person like Cerny with money. Really feels he's doing it because it's his passion. Plus the relationship with Yoshida and Andrew House. That's something you can't just get with money.

Uhhh wut? Sony Ram is common? WTF
Maybe not very common, I don't know the actual incidence. But I have personally
met people named Sony, and people with the last name Ram (not to mention the last names that might be shortened to Ram on a license plate). I wouldn't be at all surprised by someone named Sony Ram.

But I'm overexplaining I guess, the stuff wasn't meant seriously.

Ah sweet, thanks. I was playing Halo while listening, so was probably distracted when he explained it.

I honestly can't remember the last time I was so excited for a console launch. The only one I ever preordered and stood in line for was Dreamcast, but I wasn't crazy psyched and counting the days till Fall like I am now.

Maybe N64? I remember being so bummed when they delayed it and it got renamed from the Ultra 64 to Nintendo 64. This wait feels like that one. It's killing me.

Well he's not even a Sony employee so by definition he can act as a third party advisor for anyone while still working for Sony through Cerny games. That's part of the point of being independent in this fashion. Pays better too.
