This roller coaster accident in Japan always freaked me out:
http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/20...n-osaka-roller-coaster-accident/#.Uen50Y2krcc

Stand-up coaster breaks an axle, causing it to derail, a woman died because when the coaster derailed her head fucking smashed into a guard rail next to the track. Imagine if you were strapped in to your seats, unable to move as your face flies right at a big steel rail... then imagine if you were the person strapped in next to the lady that got her face smashed in.
Some industry officials pointed to the possibility of faulty maintenance.

Expoland said it disassembled the coasters on the ride in annual detailed inspections normally held in February. But this year, it did not disassemble them — and the axle went unchecked — because it could not find sufficient work space, the operator said.
Ugh. That's a terrible story.

This is why you should also have seat belts as a precaution. Here in Canada's Wonderland has seat belts as a backup for every single ride.

No they dont.

Neither Leviathan nor behemoth have seatbelts. Rode Leviathan as my first ever roller-coaster this canada day. No belt, just a waist restraint.

It's been a long time, been a long time, been a long lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely time.
I know this is a horrible story, but rollercoasters are still incredibly safe. Deaths from these rides are very rare, which is probably why it's always a big story when it does happen.

I really feel for the family of this woman, but I'm not going to stop riding rollercoasters because of the incident.

People who are scared of roller coasters will use this story as a rationalization to continue avoiding roller coasters. Just admit you're scared!

Sure, I'll admit it: I'm scared as hell of rollercoasters because you could possibly die on them.

"B-B-BUT FLYING IN PLANES AND SAFETY BLAH BLAH BLAH."

Same shit, different phobia. Just like I'm scared as hell of flying, I'm scared as hell of rollercoasters. Ya'll's crazy asses can get on them, but not me: Nope.

Our Tanya Eiserer spoke with Carmen Brown of Arlington, who says she was next in line to ride the Texas Giant behind the woman who fell to her death this evening. She told Tanya she witnessed the woman being strapped into the ride. She was sitting next to her son.

The woman, said Brown, “basically tumbled over and you just see her son [go], ‘Ahhh.’ They didn’t secure her right. One of the employees from the park — one of the ladies — she asked her to click her more than once, and they were like, ‘As long you heard it click, you’re OK.’ Everybody else is like, ‘Click, click, click.’ Hers only clicked once. Hers was the only one that went down once, and she didn’t feel safe, but they let her still get on the ride. …

“That could have been me.”

Brown said the woman’s young son was in a seat in front of his mother.

“We heard her screaming,” Brown said. “We were like, ‘Did she just fall?’”

I was riding one of those virtual roller coasters that actually move (Not just vibrate) and my seatbelt came undone when it went upside down. Banged myself a ton in there before my partner managed to hit the emergency stop button, haven't been on a real or fake coaster since.

It's absolutely ridiculous that these rides don't have seatbelts. I'm not asking to TSA up the theme park, just add seatbelts. Secondary restraint so you know, you don't die.

Yeah your right, just remembered that after I posted. Hopefully they are safe since they are very new coasters though. I would like it if they added seat belts though. I am pretty sure every other ride uses seat belts though.

Why the long case?
Damn, I was going to say, usually with the over the shoulder ones I would think you could hold it down really tight in an emergency, but this is one of those lap restraints. That really sucks.

they're pretty safe, i dont think the park has had an accident yet. Although i had a bit of a scare since my restraint did not initially lock down, [my fault, i was sitting too high in the chair] Had three employees jump right over to help instantly though. I still white knuckled the entire ride though lol.

I was just at Cedar Point with my gf a month ago and every ride we rode had a seat belt and a harness (either the shoulder one or one that clicks down to your waist/knees). I thought it was a bit much, I guess not.

I visited San Antonio with family earlier this year and we went to six flags. We waited in line for two hours for one rollercoaster and were turned down a mere 2 groups away because they had to perform maintenance due to a "technical problem".

My family and I were beyond pissed off, but now I'm so grateful that happened.

So sad. I always get a bit freaked out when I'm on a roller coaster and the attendant gives a slight tug and walks off to the next person.

I know exactly what they're talking about when they mention the 'click, click, click' sound concerning waist restraints. Was on the ride Space Mountain here at Disney in Orlando a few years ago and the restraint only clicked once while my sister and her boyfriend clicked three times. Shit was loose as fuck and I felt like I was holding on for dear life during the ride and when it ended, I complained so much that they stopped the ride and did a maintenance check.

All the tourists were asking me what happened and I told them my story and that 45 minute packed line to get on the ride was empty within minutes.

I felt more secure with a over the shoulder system, lap restraint feels you're going to slide out someway or another on steep/extreme slopes.

To be fair, Disney is actually pretty top notch about safety. I'm not even sure they have had a roller coaster death before.

Every coaster built in the past decade or so does. It's generally wooden coasters from the late 80s that have the lap restraints.

If that comes undone you will fly out out of the coaster just like one with only a lap harness. I think the newer shoulder restraint systems have belts that buckle but some of the older ones just pull down.

I swear after every roller coaster death I think "well that park is gonna close down forever" and it seems like nothing ever happens.
How often do we have fall out of restraints death? Usually i remember people having heart attack or something a lawyer could argue was a preexisting condition. I'll have to look into it more.

From the sound of it, this is negligence at its worst, especially considering the potential (which became actual) repercussion.

Law GAF: If this recounting is true, then is the person responsible for this negligence be charged with criminal negligence (involuntary manslaughter)?

Also, I feel horrible knowing that the kind just witnessed the death of his mother. What a dreadful thing for the child. What a fucking rotten end.

Damn, I've been on that coaster. Though it was before the renovation. If you want a good ass kicking there's nothing like a big wooden roller coaster.

Wow...that is absolutely horrendous...I've always been too much of a coward to ride a "real" roller coaster, guess that's never going to change.

I'm not a lawyer but I'm betting this gets passed off onto the company that made the harness(if it is not Six Flags). If the training ever said "one click is enough" then I don't know is she could be found negligible even if more clicks would have kept her in.
