I have loads of family living in Dubai, and have visited twice.

Shit. I'm sorry to my cousins, but there is no way I'm going back.

A pardon doesn't fix anything. A pardon doesn't do shit for the Australian woman who spent 8 months in prison for being raped.

They've pardoned the rapist too? smfh, this region...

damage has been done. No one should support that backwards shitohle with tourism money anyway.

I don't think people do, people go to dubai to make money and might occasionally take their family along. certainly not a tourist hot spot for obvious reasons

Dubai is filled with stories like these. I lived there for nearly 15 years and its a farce of a country. All they have is material wealth and nothing more.

Why didn't the Aussie government get their woman out?

According to Yahoo 7 News, ” the Australian government was actively trying to suppress [Gali's] story” at the time, telling her family not to speak with the media.

what?

I guess all that really matters is that she's out, but a pardon still sounds like "It's your fault you got raped, but we'll let you go becasue people are complaining".

Why do you all think that sex outside of marriage illegal there? Who or what should we all really blame here?

Sharia law....but don't worry, you can sort yourself out with a "temporary" marriage that lasts for a few hours and alls good! As unbelievable as that sounds, that's the technical loophole i've seen used over and over again to circumvent the law.

well that's ridiculous. so when I visited America last year I'm supporting guys being armed killing black teenagers and getting off Scott free? of course not. this thing is terrible but don't paint the whole country because of something like this.

IT"S YOUR GODDAMN LAW!

How in the blue hell can't we paint your country this way
Just because you built a Virgin Las Vegas with towering Skyscrapers making everyone think your modern and hip, you still have all that ass backwards in you, it's just layered over with this new fancy polish

You are making a ridiculous assumption and an ass out of yourself for even trying to balance it by bringing America into this
Hey hey, Dubai is great don't blame us, look over there mechanic doesn't work here

Your goddamn country which you reside in has this as it's law, man up, don't bitch up

Same reason you shouldn't generalise anything. Why should you paint feminist protesters in Saudi Arabia with the same brush that you do it's extremist clerics? It's kinda absurd.

When a country has a series of fucked up laws, it is fair game to say that country has a system of fucked up laws. Any country with a system of fucked up laws is fucked up. Therefore...

I'm not defending Dubai, just pointing out the fallacy of generalising. But let's play this silly game.

The US is a warmongering nation, at least a nuclear ton more than Dubai. Any nation that is a war warmongering nation is messed up. In fact, the US is directly involved in two invasions - in wars that are now a decade old. One of the two countries is on the brink of civil war. So the US is one of the shittiest states in the world? Well no, Dubai's laws are worse than...

Yes, the US is a shitty state. Like most of them. Get over it.

Edit: Criticism of Dubai is not really generalising since at it's most basic, a state is the laws it chooses to have. When those laws are fucked, so is the state. If someone was to say all people in Dubai are shit., that would be generalising. Calling a single state shit for having shit laws is not generalising.

I'm not even sure what're you arguing for [or against] now. Perhaps one of us has lost trace of the original argument.

Yeah, what a stupid rule. Four Muslim witnesses trump modern day law and science!

One word, folks: Theocracy.

Except you don't need 4 witnesses to get a rape conviction in Dubai. You can use traditional evidence or DNA based evidence. See the link I posted earlier. I get that horrid injustices still take place and things need to change, but when some of you guys use websites like TheBlaze as your go to source of information, I have to wonder what sort of people you are. A site that is run by right wing lunatic Glenn Beck.

And glad to see this women get pardoned. I knew she would tbh. Sure things will keep improving in Dubai as it becomes more of a global force.

A bit of rather weird news regarding this topic, courtesy of Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten:

"Marte Dalev was sentenced because she withdrew the rape charges" (Norwegian)

Aftenposten is citing a UAE newspaper claiming that after studying the paperworks of the case, there couldn't be any verdict regarding the rape as she allegedly withdrew the charges.

She actually confirms this to Aftenposten, saying being advised to do so by her former employer, who said it would be "easier that way" as it would be "very hard" to have a man convicted of rape of a woman in Dubai. Well that didn't turn out so good, and Dalev says that withdrawing the charges was her biggest mistake.

Considering all this, it seems a bit like the laws of Dubai are still fucked up w.r.t. extramarital sex and actually convicting men raping women, but this case isn't a good indicator of the latter because there actually never was any trial on rape charges. Or something like this.

Yeah read about this and it is really fucking bizarre. What the fuck was going through the head of her employer. Jesus christ. If this is the common advice of the region, that doesn't paint a very good picture of the system here either.

Not with Abu Dhabi calling the shots, no. Nothing has improved on the human rights front in the UAE in reality, not sure what you are trying to imply. Labor workers are still exploited, women are abused, Asians are oft treated as second class citizens, Shiaa muslims are now being targeted and expelled from the country. I can go on and on...I've seen the gross misjustices happening with my own eyes.

These kinds of events are the reason I avoid the UAE and the Emirates Airline when travelling.

Also; the slave labour

Jesus christ.

Calling a country/city shit =/= calling its people shit.

Does someone really need to go the extra mile to say "I'm sure cool people live in Dubai and the UAE but their laws are completely fucked." It's called context.

Tell that to the Australian woman who spent 8 months in prison for being drugged and raped by co-workers.

It's that shitty by law which says that unproven rape charges equal sex outside marriage charges. Unbelievable Catch 22 if ever there was one.

I don't see how this will ever go away, unless Dubai changes their laws regarding sex outside marriage.
