You know, has either company responded to the poll, or is this a case of a random fansite running a poll and getting people's hopes up?

The winner also gets a discounted fee on localization from LAI.

As we announced on June 5th, 2013, we have entered a partnership with Language Automation, Inc., (LAI), a company that specializes in game localization. LAI will be offering companies a discount on their localization fee if the companies choose to localize the games the oprainfall community votes on and promotes. There may even be ways that certain individuals within the community could be elected to help with the localization process!

Oh, sure, but if no one is interested in that company or even releasing a game, it's all still wishful thinking isn't it?

Apparently, according to LAI's website anyway, they've had Sega as a client before, so that might actually help, too.
Hrm, I guess there's that. I still don't think the localization fee is what's hanging up an announcement or release of these games. Especially in the case of something like VC3.

Hell, presumably Sega would have a free localization of VC3 assuming they don't send their lawyers to kill that fan translation project.

Yakuza 5 (44%, 5,585 Votes)
Valkyria Chronicles 3 (38%, 4,775 Votes)
Shining Hearts (12%, 1,483 Votes)
Yakuza HD Remakes (6%, 881 Votes)

I think it's a safe winner now!

i don't understand how shining hearts managed to get that much after the HORRIBLE anime.

Congrats to Yakuza 5 i guess.

Ignoring bumps for the next days.
Every time I enter this post my heart breaks a little.

(glad to see that the game Y5 has some sub-support)

Every day that Yakuza 5 is not confirmed for The West is a little piece of me dying. It's the one game I really need in my gaming life.
Make it happen Sega!

Operation Rainfall is hardly a "random" fansite. Also, did you read the intro at the top of the page? It explicitly explains that the poll is not a guarantee of localization, but more to use as "ammo" when taking the pitch to Sega and Konami.

It blows my mind that Sega is publishing that Project Diva game or whatever, but not Yakuza 5. It's infuriating beyond belief. I hope these votes end up meaning something, but I have my reservations. Now that Project Aces has hit the shit-dust (F2P Ace Combat title) all I have left is Yakuza Studios and Platinum Games to provide me Japanese PS2-era goodness. =(

Hatsune Miku games probably cost a lot less to localize, especially given that none of the songs need English lyrics. I don't know how lengthy the cutscenes/skits are but there's no way they're anywhere near as involved as Yakuza ones, even if Miku gets voice acting (which I kinda doubt).

Interesting that there are folks out there still making noise about Y5. I would support it's localization with a purchase if it ever happens but I don't have much hope for it at this point.

It's only been 7 months, it's really not that long since JP release.

My favorite series this gen..

That would explain the noise.

Also there's usually a 1 year gap between Japan and western release anyway, not all hope is lost yet. A December 2013 - March 2014 release would give my PS3 a happy ending.

Well, yes, I did read the site. Which is why I'm just confused as to why people are taking this poll so seriously. I'm sure you could start a "VC3 vs Y5" poll on GAF, but I'm not sure what that would ultimately do.

Operation Rainfall was started as a campaign for Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower to get localized and they all did.

Part of it is a localization company has offered a discount for localizing whatever game wins the poll. I don't know what they've worked on so I don't know how good they are, but it's a little more than a random poll on a random website. Obviously Sega still has to want to shell out for the localization and use that company to do it.

do we know any games exactly that this company worked on, they're partner page is pretty impressive, but do we know even if these guys are any good at what they do without a specfic example to draw from.

Yes, I know who they are and I bought the trilogy of Wii JRPGs.

The difference is that while Nintendo seems to be okay with tossing scraps to Xseed, Sega is known to hoard its Japanese games and refuse to license them to anyone.

Sure, I saw that too, but... I dunno, I mean, what if 8-4 came out and said, "we'll do a Sega game for free!" - would that matter to anyone making the calls in Japan?

As I said, there's the VC3 localization that is apparently all but done, and some localization companies buy/take/license/whatever fan translations, so the cost of localizing VC3 is probably negligible. But I don't know if they're interested.

Heck, in the same way that Nintendo could just grab that Mother 3 translation - which the translator has offered! - patch the rom, and then slap it up on VC for like 15 bucks but they just don't want to do it for whatever reason.

I suppose we have to wait and see what OpRain says about the matter once the poll is 'over'. I do wish they'd at least give a date.

The google-guide is a big help for this game. And the fighting is as awesome as ever. I recommend people picking up the japanese version.

They were all localized by Nintendo Europe at that point. Their campaign was for US release.

However they lost all their credibility with the Collectors Edition Box fiascoes.

I've been doing some research...and the results don't look good:
  • Yakuza 3 was released on the 26th February 2009 in Japan, announced for the US in the 8th of December of 2009 and released in the US on the 9th March 2010. This means it was announced 9 months and 5 days after the Japanese release. Yakuza 3 was also believed never to be released in the West at the time, but there were leaks about its localization back in 19th September 2009, 6 months and 24 days after the Japanese release.
  • Yakuza 4 was released on the 18th March 2010 in Japan, announced for the US in the 8th of June and released in the US on the 18th March 2011. This means it was announced only 2 months and 18 days after the Japanese release. Yakuza 3 did above expectations, so that could be the cause of such prompt announcement.
  • Yakuza 5 was released 6th December 2012 in Japan. Today, 8 months and 16 days after the Japanese release there still no announcement, rumors or leaks about its official localization.
Let's face it, there's still hope, but the chances of this game coming are becoming very small...

I like how people are saying that we should buy the new Miku game to support Yakuza's localization. I'm pretty sure the only thing sega will be convinced at is how much money Miku makes.

agreed, it really is the weirdest argument ive heard since VC kids were being told to support whatever they were hocking at the time...i don't think that's how anyone in a decision-making position thinks

This is disheartening, but we have to remember that Y5 is a much MUCH bigger game than Y4 as well. It's 4 cities and 5 characters vs 1 city and 4 characters. Plus, much of the content of Kamurocho from Y3 could pretty much be reused in Y4 as it's the same city, same games, same menus etc.

I can see why people could think like that. Back when people begged Namco to keep localizing Tales games, they responded by telling their fans to keep buying other Namco games and then they would see about localizing them.

To be fair, they are localizing a shitload more tales games now as well.
Never would've thought we'd get the ToS re-release.

Eh, ToS was one of the most successful entries and they bothered to release Abyss on 3DS. A Symphonia re-release was a shoe-in for localization.

But yeah, it IS getting more and more worrying as more time passes. :/

Well, it's based on the PS2 ToS which we never got which is why it threw me a little.

I'm sure Sega will announce something soon....They better do.

I think pso 2 is what's preventing y5 currently actually. Spending all their time localising that right now instead.

This is slightly off topic.

But considering the team rebuilt the engine for yakuzaa 5. Does that mean that Yakuzaa 6 on PS4 is already in the works?

I'd import that just for the visuals... these games have amazing amount of work put into them.

I think them saying the engine being completly rebuild for Yakuza 5 was a slight exaggeration. It just more refind similalrly to how games previously were.

I think team is not making Yakuza 6 next. They will experiment more...just as they did with Kenzan I think.

I would've thought so. It's a massive seller in Japan after all.

I still think it's kinda insane from Sega too put so much work into the visuals of the game and have it aimed/released in only one region (Yakuza games, Valkyria Chronicles)

That's why I still hold the believe it will come over here eventually. That's a Lot of development to be released in one territory, and this one had 2 years vs 1 like the last 2 installments.

Seconded. Its not the perfect way to play the game (I'd love to get an English translation) but I just can't wait that long! I cleared the Kiryu section earlier (epic end battle) and now have just done the first bit of Saejima's story. He seems cooler than I remember, not sure if his moves list has been tweaked but I'm really liking his fighting style and heat moves (especially the ground bounce combo's). Can't believe its taken me 26 hours to get to this point either, these games have always been a time sink for me but this one is absorbing even more hours than usual. I can't see myself 100%ing the game in less than 100 hours if not more.

Is it difficult to understand the new mini games and sub games in the translated version? I've got it but haven't started it yet in the hopes that the English version would come eventually.

you mean non-translated version? :D

well the japanese chess Shogi and the like are really hard if you dont how to play those games beforehand.

games like Golf is pretty easy to get a handle on.

Its been a week roughly, so I thought this thread should be updated with the operation rainfall poll numbers (I apologize in advance for pissing off anybody for bumping the thread in hopes of official localization news):

Yakuza 5 (46%, 6,914 Votes)

Valkyria Chronicles 3 (37%, 5,583 Votes)

Shining Hearts (11%, 1,669 Votes)

Yakuza HD Remakes (6%, 1,011 Votes)

Yakuza 5 with a healthy lead still, good to see.
