Phoenix Wright Virgin - How is the iOS HD Trilogy?

Wait why does the iOS trilogy version show up as free on the appstore but then there is iOS phoenix wright for 5 bucks?

Do I have to buy them in app?

I think there's a version of the first Phoenix Wright, (5 bucks)...

and later, they did the trilogy... it's for free, but only the first two cases are unlocked, you have to buy the rest of the cases directly in the app, like if it's DLC.

I think you spend around 17 dollars unlocking all the cases.

EDIT: I wrote "free" instead of "first", sorry, brainfart.

In app purchase, it's basically $17 dollars for all 3 games

Go with the iOS version if you've never played the games before, DS versions are superior though.

The font used in the iOS-version is ugly. It also types out dates and names of places so fucking slow compared to the DS games. That coupled with it not being optimized for iPhone 5, makes it really hard for me to enjoy it.

I have no problem with how the sprites look in HD, though. Actually I think it's a good fit, so there's something.

Been awhile, but if I remember correctly, the control for the ios is also a bit more convoluted for no real reason, like holding a button for additional option or something?

Surely I'm not the only one that read the thread title and thought of objectionmiahentai.gif?

I'm at work or I'd look it up, I'm pretty sure I've seen it on GAF.

I can't recommend the iOS version to anyone. It's simply too much of a downgrade from the DS releases. The only improvements are the visuals and pricing, but other than that it's worse in about everything else.

-Missing animation frames (no blinking, sometimes people don't open their mouths when talking or are missing one of their talking frames, etc.).
-Sometimes a character does the wrong animation entirely.
-GBA-quality soundtrack for the 2nd & 3rd games (this should be a dealbreaker to you; you must hear the amazing soundtrack this series offers in the best quality possible).
-Pearl's theme is gone.
-More typos.
-Overall performance is worse. Some parts lag for no particular reason.
-Worse presentation, such as the user interface popping in and out every time someone talks.
-Sound effects are off. The "not guilty" cheer is cut-off halfway through, for example.

I wholly recommend getting the DS versions of the games instead, unless money is a real issue for you.

...How did they fuck this up so badly?

A lot of these are news to me... Did they port GBA version instead of DS or something?

damn... that sounds bad :(

well... the main focus of the games are the STORY, so I guess it's still bearable...

Wouldn't wiiware be the best version due to highest quality audio?

well, the screen crop it's really stupid on the WiiWare version.
cgr-undertow---phoenix-wright-ace-attorney-justice-for-all-review-for-nintendo-wii.jpg

and I don't know, for some reason, it's great to have those games portable... playing in bed or chilling on a couch is the best way to play a Phoenix Wright game.

I dunno, man. More typos is worrying. I just finished up AA2 and there were a decent amount of typos throughout it. I couldn't possibly imagine there being even more.

One more problem with the iOS version is that fast-forwarding the text requires at least three text screens to activate, making it kind of an annoyance. And it can happen with new text as well as already-read text, while the DS versions only let you fast-forward through repeated text.

It's also extremely convoluted to fast-forward through a cross-examination. You can't fast-forward through it normally. You need to reach the end of the testimony, start the conversation that would repeat the testimony, start fast-forwarding through that conversation, and then the testimony can be fast-forwarded.

Not only that, but the entire testimony gets fast-forwarded with no additional input from you. What shoddy programming.

The Wiiware version has the DS-quality soundtrack.

I guess it would be the highest quality if you didn't use headphones, but not even headphones would fix have GBA-quality songs in the iOS version.

Hmmmm, always thought the wiiware one was higher quality than ds or why would the latest PW soundbox specifically mention these were the wiiware versions of the tracks?

Well, I was more saying that it has the DS versions of the soundtrack, but would be less compressed, meaning that it sounds a little clearer without any headphones.

well, yeah, I guess you're right, it kinda "breaks the immersion" or something along those lines.

it really is a shame that Capcom made a inferior version on a superior hardware.

also while i agree with every point of Poltergust's post, ios one is perfectly playable and the music is fine. If you never played any of the other versions most of the points would be moot anyways besides the shitty performance and typos everywhere.

$17 vs $60-100+ for the ds carts.

Also while the character sprites are wonky, the background art looks quite good.

I was looking to get this as well but why the hell did they replace the gorgeous sprites with what looks like cheap, online flash animation?

In the DS versions everything runs at a smooth 60FPS. In the iOS version, it all runs at a choppy 30 even though the iPhone is a technologically superior device.

Textbook case of lazy devs.

Is this a joke? Because the only thing where framerate even matters would be the bonus case with the 3D model viewer..

and transitions between characters in court which is like half the time.

also for the menu ui which you are tinkering with a bunch in the game.

the music in AA games is seriously like 70% of the enjoyment for me. I tried playing some of the ios game at the dentist where i forgot my earbuds... so fucking boring and the unskippable text scroll is infinitely worse.

After playing it, I kinda wished I got the DS versions instead. Looked up the DS version and they looked better and more consistent. There are also typos and errors that I don't know are there on the DS version or not.

But again, $16 vs whatever price you find while hunting them which may go $60 or something. That's a very deciding difference.

uses the happy people theme from the first game.

I recall saying some mean things about capcom out loud when this happened.

Was pearl's theme not in the gba game? How can anyone fuck this up? Needa open up the app to see what the fuck happened.

Wow, they better have a damn good reason for doing it. Her theme song was as adorable as she was.

We know. The iOS set is $17 for the first three though.

$55 in the US.

How in the hell did this happen?

The WiiWare version may not be portable but it doesn't have any of these problems.

So glad I got all the DS games while I had the chance. Took about 4 months or so to find them all locally but I finally did it. Of course this was a couple years ago.

They tend to be cheaper if you can find a used copy at Gamestop, though most stores gut their DS games now, so that's no easy feat, and that's assuming they have a decent selection. Every so often at one store I frequent, they'll have a Pheonix Wright game or two for about 12 or 13 bucks, but that's rare. Online the prices are climbing, but at least they can be had.

edit: After checking, online prices are actually really good. DS versions ftw, though obviously the iOS versions are cheaper.

Ohhhh. Finally, that's the answer to why I couldn't skip text at certain points in the iOS version.

It's kinda hilarious how bad the iOS HD trilogy turned out, considering how freakin' long it took for it to be localized. It was originally supposed to come out last fall, but got delayed at least twice. I wonder what exactly the problems they ran into that made the release so bad.

Edit: the grossest thing I've noticed about the iOS version is the panning motion blur shot whenever the camera quickly moves between benches. It looks TERRIBLE. Like a giant blob appears in the middle of the courtroom.

But it's waaay cheaper to play the iOS version, so it's fine. But for some reason, the original DS games are actually available at reasonable price now. The last time I checked, Justice For All was going for 40 bucks, but now it's down to 15.

The WiiWare games seem like fine versions, also. And those are 10 bucks each.

That was part of my performance point. It slows down whenever that happens for some reason. The background actually does look like that, though:

The DS versions are the best. There's a lot of charm playing the games on two screens.
