Sony have issued a statement saying they've cancelled the PS4 and retro-cancelled the vita. Any vita handsets that exist will be sucked into an 'X' shaped hole where Ballmer will devour them with his big gaping maw.

Let me.ask a serious question...how come as soon as Sony releases a statement regarding this article...all of a sudden DF's sources miraculously have slightly different information that aligns more with what Sony is saying?

Where did this "1 GB OS , 7 GB RAM" thing came from anyway?

Earlier rumours pegged the PS4's OS footprint at 512MB, so when the PS4 was revealed to have 8GB rather than 4GB, most people assumed that the OS allocation itself would double, due to perhaps more features being included but, regardless, with the primary intention of giving the OS some headroom should Sony need it for future endeavours.

It's such a waste that so much RAM is being used up by the OS in both consoles. I really don't get it.
Think of it as a partition. In a PC if you have 8GB of RAM it means the OS can assign up to 8GB of RAM for stuff—but it's usually using much less, say, 1.5GB. But it would be a big problem if you only had 1.5GB of RAM, so you have the extra 6.5GB for when you need it

In the console the developer has to have a set amount of RAM so that they know they're not stepping on the OS's toes and vice versa. So they set aside 3GB of RAM for the background OS processes that are happening all the time plus enough RAM so that they can do more stuff when they need to.

At least this is my understanding.
 
There are many things wrong with this post. Obviously much of the game data is going to be off ram, but the idea is to gave as much IN ram as possible at any given time as it's more efficient and order of magnitude faster than the hdd. It also means you can be less dependant on the HDD or disk which is another advantage.

Also, and lol to this, where the hell does this imply the Gpu is doing nothing but texturing? How on Earth did you come to that conclusion? Do you think texturing is the only ram intensive and requiring task? There are countless things that hog memory. Lighting, geometry, filtering (AA, af) and so much more. As you get more advanced graphical features and more complex world's and models, so too does ram use go up.

You end with saying that modern games will not be able to use that much ram per frame. How wrong you are. Crisis 3 at 1080p with ultra settings and high end filtering solutions already takes up, up to 3gb of vram. Future games will gobble up 5gb like candy. Stop looking at current gen games as a means to predict the ram consumption of future next gen games, which will be considerably more demanding and advanced.

This is wrong, that not how VRAM works.

VRAM Is allocated automatically depending on the GPU VRAM. A 660 will report almost 2GB of VRAM usage in the MSI afterburner at ultra settings, but a sli'd 2GB 560 Ti will still be able to run BF3 at ultra and outperform the 660 despit having only 1GB of VRAM.

3GB is enough for Crysis 3 even at 1600p and 8xMSAA btw:

 
So if this 4.5 malarkey true, does that mean Sony lied? I certainly think it would paint them as disingenuous.

Lied about what? They said you would get 8gb of RAM and you're getting 8gb of RAM in the system. If you were expecting 8gb to be 8gb, then you're extremely foolish because anyone could have told you that the OS takes up memory.
