But – I still work here. And I will continue to try and answer questions as long as I can, but I can only comment on stuff that’s announced. Cool?
Ok, so since its announced that out of 8GB RAM, 3GB is reserved for 3 OSs, so I take it 1GB per OS, yes?
If so, isn't 1 GB quite high?
And lets say in future, you are able to make OS a bit more optimised, will it be possible to give this RAM back to the games?

It's a product made by a corporation, you'll get over it. No need to white knight shareholders and suits.
It would be great if you answered the question instead of making personal attacks. The name is offensive with its connotation to private parts, and it's clearly meant in a derogatory manner.

I'm getting a PS4 only, and I'm not interested in X1, but I still find the name offensive and meant to annoy people.

Xbone was fun at first..
Then i got lazy and typing x1 is easier..

You want it to be as smooth as possible.

No, it doesn't work like that. According to this and assuming the 5/3 split is valid, 5 and 3 GB are the respective memory allocations for the game VM and the application VM. And once it's settled, I don't expect this split to change. The further we will be in the next generation, the more memory we will probably need as we will run more applications simultaneously.

The VM approach makes it difficult to earn a lot through OS optimization as any ram optimization will only be made available in its own memory space. Freeing some megabytes in the Application space won't change anything in the game space if the line between both VMs doesn't move too. It would only be more memory made available to applications.

The Xbone "nickname" seems deliberately offensive. Would people be up in arms if others were calling the PS3 or PS4 a derogatory name?

nah it's because saying Xbox One every time is quite a mouthful. And calling it just One doesn't make sense either. Xbone rolls off your tongue. Kinda like how people call iPod Touch the iTouch (I hate it though, but same reason).

Xbone sounds badass too.

Just out of interest, I would assume that getting a higher clock speed is an easy way to increase performance without redesigning the hardware. Now yields would be lower they say, but is there a way of knowing how worse the yields would actually be? If Sony decided to up the clock to 900mhz on the GPU, how many would be tossed compared to clocking to 800mhz?

If someone is honestly annoyed or angry over what someone else calls a product, perhaps that person needs to reevaluate his or her standards as to what he or she should be getting upset about.

My brother calls Walmart "Walfart." It's stupid, but I don't go shitting my pants over it and telling him to stop. I've got more important shit to worry about.

PShit4 and Xbone. Problem solved.

Thanks.

Also is that even that much of an advantage for XBone? You think Sony could still do the same with PS4?

They could, but I don't see why they would. At some point it just becomes a dick-waving contest, and they're already so far ahead in terms of GPU power. With 18 CUs a 50 MHz upclock would also increase heat output by 10W or so, a not insignificant amount when you're already dealing with ~150W like the PS4 will be.

Cerny's gonna go "fuck that noise" and shoot for 8GHz

8 cores
8GB RAM
8GHz

The circle will be complete.

Lol. More seriously, I'm sure that they have considered a possible push from MS. I would be surprised If they didn't reserve themselves some margin to upclock their chips if they feel it as a necessity.

Thanks.

It doesn't appreciably change the gap between the Xbone and the PS4, no.

That said, I really don't see Sony boosting their clocks in response. They have more robust hardware in a smaller envelope (what with the power brick being inside the unit) so they definitely have less thermal headroom to play with. Plus the power difference is still well in their favor, there's just no need.

Maths, how do they work?

X = 1.2 P = 1.8

Is P 50% more than X? Let's see.

1.2 x 50 / 100 = 0.6

1.2 + 0.6 = 1.8

Tadaaaaaa!

you ignore the 1 because they are both the same which is your standard, so 1 = 100% and find the percentage from 2 to 8.
which is %20.

difference : 8 - 2 = 6;
average: ( 8 + 2) / 2 = 5;

percentage : 5 to 6 = %20

A 50mhz increase on PS4 gpu would make it close to 2TFLOPs, but everyone already assumes a PS4 upgrade(pre/post launch) is less likely due to heat issues cause of the smaller size. I disagree with the notion that something smaller is likely to make more noise and run hotter. One just has to compare PS3 fat with slim models. The PS4 will be fine and we will see similar upgrades.

I feel like I'm being trolled.

OMG a whole 53mhz. Just enough to make the news but not enough to scare people into worrying about rrod all over again.
I still dont get why if they claim the 40% or 50% more raw power the ps4 has is really not going to amount to much , then why strive to close the gap as little as 5% or whatever it is.

Also not sure why this proves the yield rumor false. One thing to remember is microsoft delayed asia launch by a full year. Japan isnt getting the xbox one at launch either.

These policies could be a direct result of yield issues

Admit it. You're so desperate for a tag, that you'll even take a negative one. After seeing Bish hand out that #deadwrong tag recently, you're trying to get one yourself.
