New Super Smash Wii U Screenshot Reveals Metroid: Other M Stage ~ Pyrosphere

Seriously, I cannot get over the kind of hyperbole that Other M ushers in every single time. The game isn't even worth the effort.

Yup, yup. Game was a black hole that nulled any possible emotions I could've have towards it.

It's not like Smash hasn't had bad games represented in the past (With Brawl having DK Barrel Blast and Yoshi's Island DS, for starters), so I won't let a bad apple or two stop me from a feast.

I remember thinking it was "Pretty good" while playing it, but after I beat it I immediately forgot everything about it. Much like FFXIII.

The people freaking about (yet another shit) Metroid stage from Other M that Samus's design is from Other M right?

I really don't like Other M but come on now.

Ugh, such a bland stage. Why not take one of the more interesting of aspects of Other M's setting/level design like the holograms that simulated different environments?

Edit: Or even better, something from Prime 3, which had absolutely sublime art direction, especially when compared with Other M. A Skytown or Phaaze level would be awesome.
This.

I mean Elysia , Phaaze, Pirate Homeworld, but you had to chose the lava stage of a generic art style game. Why? :( Maybe there are two stages per franchise? Please

Other M isn't some underrated gem.

It's a simplistic action game with a shitty story. There's nothing really of value. There's no exploration, combat is too simple to "master", and there aren't any "wow"-worthy visuals. It doesn't even have any real sequence-breaks and is a lousy game to speed-run. The boss fights are sorta fun, but I certainly wouldn't replay the entire game to fight Ridley or Goyagma. Other M's non-story parts are the equivalent of a more polished licensed movie game; they aren't frustrating, but they aren't satisfying either.

So what's there to enjoy? A shitty story with shitty dialogue and a shitty protagonist with shitty voice-acting? Go play Silent Hill: Shattered Memories if you want an underrated story-based game on the Wii. If you want something to laugh at, watch Other M's story on youtube.

I wish we could all just agree that the best Metroid game is Metroid Prime
Pinball.
I actually wouldn't object to someone calling that their favorite Metroid game.

The stage looks great in that image. Can't say I'm too thrilled with Sakurai using Other M as the basis for Samus' design and stage choices though.

But it's not that big of a deal.

I didn't mind this area in Other M and I actually like it the way it's presented here as a stage. I really really don't like Donkey Kong 64 and did not like Diddy's pop guns or rocket barrel in the game, but I certainly didn't care about those things enough to boycott Brawl or Returns. The Other M hate must run deep.

With the actual layout of the stage it looks this one will be a lot of fun to play on casually and competitively. At least until Ridley fire breaths his butt down the center.

While the quote associated with this picture in English and Japanese leads one to believe Ridley is a stage hazard, I think Ridley's playable chances are still possible. While I expect a stage hazard in Other M clone Ridley we very well could have Super Metroid Ridley as the actual fighter. Kind of like Donkey Kong in 75 Meters.

Brawl had a classic Metroid stage (Norfair) and a Prime stage (Orpheon). Both very disappointing. The design on this stage is good by past standards. At least it's not a generic platform floating in front of a background. So far it's one of the most visually pleasing stages in the game; most of the stages so far are very plain.

But a great idea they could have done would be to have the stage be made of holograms and cycle through various environments; maybe it does. But at least they put more effort into the design of it than most of the staged they've shown.

That's actually a different Donkey Kong, better known as Cranky Kong.

I miss the Nintendo-themed pinball games (except Mario Pinball Land). Great fun. I'd love another Morphball/pinball.
Maybe they could go bigger and have a Metroid pinball game based on the entire series, reusing levels from the first pinball game for the Prime segment.

Turian would be an awesome level in pinball form.

I still think it sucks that stages from handheld games are stuck on the 3DS game. The 3DS stages look a lot better than the ones on the Wii U.

Although I admit that the Wii U Pilotwings one looks great.

As someone that enjoyed Other M, the salty tears are excellent.

And I dont see Ridley's beak anywhere (and much less in the hole) where the fuck are people watching. Im sure its going to be a stage hazard, and fuck sakurai for that (he is not going to be a playable character yet again and Im going to be sad), but he is not in that screen.

Also the 3DS game is bringin the big version down. All those stages of the portable version would have appeared in the big one, and all the limitations its imposing and fucking up the other version, people can say whatever they like but the 3DS version is nothing more than shit in my eyes.

Some people here are taking things way too seriously.

Okay the stage\character design is from Other M, so fucking what? It's not like anything related from that game will infect the others like a plague and make anything it touches just as bad.

Sometimes, GAF...

We're angry in large part because Smash is partially a celebration of Nitendo's History, and to us it feels like the game is being commemorated despite the negative impact it had, perceived or otherwise. It's not as bad as say, the CDi Nintendo games getting repped, but to those of us who disliked the game and/or felt it was responsible for Metroid going on hiatus it leaves a constant reminder of something we'd rather forget.

I would Buy both versions if the CDi characters showed up.

I don't know who the hell thought it was a good idea to put Team Ninja in charge of the art direction in a Metroid game, that's all I know.

I mean look at that fucking thing. Jesus.

Nintendo was in charge of the art direction...
Morisawa

I'm Morisawa, from Production Group No.1 of the Software Planning & Development Department. I worked as an art director on Metroid: Other M. I was responsible for creating characters and stages for the game, as well as supervising the concept design of the appearance of the entire game world. I have also worked on other games in the Metroid series: Metroid Fusion12, where I was in charge of backgrounds, and Metroid: Zero Mission, where I was the art director. This project is the first experience I've had of working on a game for a home console, so there were lots of things I didn't understand. I therefore joined this project with the intention of serving my home console apprenticeship with Team NINJA.

Iwata

Now then, Morisawa-san. You've worked on the Metroid series in the past, but the games you worked on were for the Game Boy Advance system. This project involved 3D CG, which you didn't have experience of creating, and it also involved linking up with a team of people that had more experience than you did. Having to be the art director in those circumstances must have actually put quite a lot of pressure on you. How did you feel about such things?

Morisawa

You're right of course, I did feel pressure. I do have a grasp of the appearance of the world in the Metroid series, but I had never even been involved with 3D technology, never mind with the kind of projects that involve 100 people - the kind Team NINJA take for granted.

Iwata

So you'd worked in project teams of 10, 15 or 20 people, but never in a team of 50 or 100.

Morisawa

Sakamoto-san just came to me one day and said 'we're leaving the design of Metroid: Other M to you'. 'Design', however, includes absolutely everything from 3D models to motion capture. I didn't know how to proceed with such things in my work, and since I didn't have any personal experience, I was really wondering what I should do... When the date of our first meeting with Team NINJA was set, we found out about it a month or so in advance...

Why is this spoiler titled thread acceptable? Sure, make a thread for a new stage, or a new item, or a slight color change to one of the characters, but don't create unavoidable spoilers. That's just inconsiderate. With this series in particular there are people like me who were burnt out on the SSBB Dojo thread who want to know as little as possible about SSBU/3DS until release.

You guys need to calm down! It's really not that serious...

I think comparing Other M is very hyperbolic. It's not a bad game, and even the story isn't bad, just very poorly written. It doesn't negate the old games or the Prime trilogy. Having multiple continuities didn't kill Zelda fans. The game fits with the rest of the series just fine with a little inference from the games and other sources. Heck, the Prime games are better but fit worse.

I'd say making the game out to be worse than it is is more destructive to the future of the franchise than the game itself. The Prime games are better, I agree, but there's a huge amount of degrees between GotY and the ridiculous hyperbolic hate that often pops up when Other M is mentioned. People are saying they won't buy Smash just because it acknowledges Other M's existence.

Because making generic unspecific titles to cater to the crazy tiny minority of that considers this spoilers is not conducive to the rest of the community.

Fair enough. The game does get excessively bad press. I feel it's just another one of those "update an old franchise to current gaming trends and miss the mark" titles. I agree with most of the criticism, but it's embarrassing how people articulate it.

If the choice is between getting Other M shit in my Smash and no WiiU version I'll happily skip and get to the superior 3DS version (granted it doesn't have Other M shit smeared in it).

Wow, that's a very reasonable reaction. Personally I'm going to sell my Wii U and dedicate my life to bringing down Nintendo because of this.

So...don't relentlessly follow every detail then I guess? I mean was knowing that the game would feature a lava-based Metroid stage really that big of a deal?

Well, I guess Ridley's out as a playable character then. Pretty disappointing, though expected.

Hoping that K. Rool will at least make the cut.

I'll be so disappointed if he doesn't make it :/

he has too, even if you just did the original version from DKC 1 and not the pirate or scientist, i want the side B to be him throwing his crown.

his up B can be a copy of Dede's up B since they both can jump high

i also agree that the 3DS has the best stages so far.
someone posted a pic of a "template" for smash wii u stages with a platform, two platforms on the left and right and "insert background moving here"
i think something like that and its true.

look at skyward swords stage.

What if K.Rool could switch outfits and moves like Zelda? That could be pretty neat.

I should try Other M one day. I'll probably enjoy it just because I'll go in there with negative expectations and I find amusement it campy things.

Funny to see you can get it for £1 on Amazon (Plus P+P).

I did enjoyed Other M.
Don't give too much credit about what people are saying about this game on the internet.

My only problems with the game were the pointing and the linearity (just like Fusion).

I really hope Samus will inherit some Other M moves/finishes. She could be deadly. Fast and Furious. Other M opened up a lot of things for Samus in Smash Bros. She used to be very Slow and Powerful, now she is lightning quick and deadly. I can't wait to play as Samus and discover her new moves.

Sorry for these unpopular reasoning and optimism...

Don't need to be sorry! ^^

I quite like fast agile Other M Samus. I found it pretty entertaining the agility and the finisher moves in Other M despite the game's flaws. I'm sure it will also be a blast on SSB. Can't wait.
