You can play through Wind Waker HD on a First Person perspective

Nothing? I want it to be $40, because I don't want the standard to be exceeded by this game. More or less, it's a matter of principle - Nintendo is going at least $10 more than the standard MSRP for a port/remake/compilation (one can assume), if not $20. It's compounded by Nintendo releasing all of their games for $60, making it seem like they don't really "get" the $60 price point.

you can get it for 40 on amazon if you like.

Can we finally get a thread title edit? Nobody gives a shit about being able to move in first-person, it's all about selfies and filters

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
I'm gonna love taking pictures...that's one of my favorite parts of Pikmin 3, but unfortunately in that game you're always in a rush so it's not really a feature I could use as much as I want since I feel like I'm wasting time.

Also, I liked finding the treasure maps to the Triforce and decoding them. I don't get why people put that side-quest in that thread the other day with stressful game situations, sure it takes a bit, but it's pretty relaxing and fun in my mind.

And unlike Skyward Sword, you can't boost potions to make you recover more health or make you invincible. So Wind Waker's Hero Mode should be even harder than Skyward Sword's.

Granny's Elixir all the way. There was actually a glitch that made the Elixir infinite, I wonder if it's still going to be there...

and here I am asking myself why anyone want to take a "selfpic" as some videogame character. Hell I never quite understood the entire point of taking any pics in a videogame (if it isn't related to the plot).

Sometimes GAF is a true a mystery to me.

Had to mute the video because the guy talks like half his mouth is numb. Why do they put people like this in positions they're not trained for?
Usually I'm quite tolerant of these sorts of things and get annoyed when people dwell on them but yeah, you're right; it's like the guy recorded it moments after leaving dental surgery.

Well, it was confirmed you can use the Wii U Pro Controller to play the game... and being able to "keep" the Soup/Elixir after using it involve pausing and switching items at the right time you activate drinking the Soup/Elixir. So, if they haven't fixed how that works then it should still exist.

Anyone can tell me if the camera will be inverted-only ( same as GC) ? Or there will be the normal-camera option this time?

First person? Skyrim influence? Just made me think of that for some reason.

Skyrim her impact.

Yea... no. They did first person in Ocarina and then first person movement in Skyward Sword.

In the Gamespot video it sounds like it to me. I don't know why anyone would expect the soundtrack to change, especially when considering the battle music syncs to the action that's happening on-screen. They didn't change OoT3D's music they certainly aren't going to here.

That is the main reason they stuck with midi for so long. Miyamoto loves dynamic audio and midi makes this incredibly easy. Fixed, pre-recorded audio would complicate this to no end, though it's possible to design a game with that in mind. Retrofitting that into an old game is not really feasible.

Although the user saying they rearranged that one boss theme is a little weird.

First-person? Ick.
First-person viewpoint needs to stay as far away from games as possible.

Double ick.

Oo

You're aware that this has always been in Zelda games, right? If it didn't bother you before it will not do so now. All they did was improve how it works.

it always did

I know that arguing semantics is mostly silly and comes down to splitting hairs but that won't stop me: I think this always was more appropriate as a remaster. A remake would mean they built the entire game from scratch, like the famous and still probably best example, Resident Evil on the GCN which allows for some creative freedom in what makes it in and what might get added. Another example would be Metroid Zero Mission.

I say WWHD is a remaster because, as Aonuma emphasized in interviews, they don't want to stray too far away from what the original did so they're enhancing the visuals and tweaking gameplay to align with modern standards in the same way an engineer would remaster a song for a re-release of an album. OoT 3D is the same thing. It's the original work, updated with a new code of paint, not built entirely from the ground up and possibly making significant changes.

The well established HD Collections are mostly just straight uprezzed ports with fixed framerates which is why I always cringe when podcasts referred to them as remakes.

And now that I wrote this I saw Madao's post that said the same thing basically ... great :D

Didn't it have inverted X and Y?

GCN WW's camera had regular X-rotation and the Y axis simply did an analog zoom-in and zoom-out function. The first person view was indeed Y-inverted, though.

Gotta double post, sorry.

I have never seen this discussed so I made an info graphic.

Please compare the UI and inventory. The changes are minor but have huge implications on the flow of the gameplay!

Remember how you always had to equip the Wind Waker to change wind directions, THEN equip the sail to actually ... sail ... THEN you had to equip the grappling hook if you wanted to hunt for treasure ...THEN you had to equip bombs if you needed to use the cannon?

Well, NO MORE!

Wind Waker HD does away with all of that and I find it funny that Nintendo only ever talks about the Swift Sail.

The Hook, Cannon and Wind Waker are perma-mapped to the D-Pad which was used to quick-select the map and day/time/weather indicator in the GCN version. It appears the Wind Waker and either sail are no longer even classified as selectable inventory items. They seem to have been turned into context-sensitive items that no longer take up your manually determined item slots! That makes things soo so much easier!

Note: both gameplay and inventory screenshots are from completely different parts of each version of the game so the item selections obviously don't match.

Which is all very great. It's not quite on the level of the Iron Boots fix in OoT3D, but it's damn close. Just from screens and videos it's obvious how much work they've done to streamline the game along with the graphical updates. This is obviously more than just an HD port.

Yep this has always been one of the things I was happy about. It's in the vein of the dedicated Ocarina button in OOT3D. No need to clutter your inventory and buttons with things you'll need to use all the time throughout the game.

[Edit] Though now I'm confused, there are three missing items in that Wii U inventory: Magic Armor, Hookshot, Iron Boots. But there's only two inventory slots available. Maybe the Iron Boots end up mapping to down on the d-pad, and don't enter the inventory? Or maybe the Magic Armor is integrated into the interface in a different kind of way? I could make an argument for either of them not taking up a primary item button.

I'd say it goes even beyond the iron boots fix since it applies to the entire game!

No there are three slots. It's always three slots per row.

Grapple, Leaf, Bombs
Boomerang, Bow, ____
Hammer, ___, ___

The hexagon shape is confusing you. Look at the top row which has three items. The bottom row would look identical.

Duh, I dunno what I was thinkin. Probably just thrown by the different widths of the rows. But actually now instead of implying one too few slots, it seems like it implies one too MANY slots. The bow isn't in the center of that hexagon, it looks like the row can support more than three items. It's probably just that the bow expands to a slot-and-a-half when you get the fire/ice/light arrows, though.

[Edit] I like that the item icons are new, lookin through 'em. Not just upres'd versions of the old ones.

Hero Mode for me.

My biggest complaint was that Wind Waker was too easy.

I don't like when I can purposely play a game sloppy, lazy, and just hack because I don't have to worry about dying or the consequences. This will force me to fight correctly.

Glad Hero mode is unlocked from the start.

It is optional. (Just like switching to 3rd person in Skyrim - which I never do)

The solution is simple. Don't switch to the 1st person viewpoint.

Who knows? Could be fun in parts like the shooting arrows in the Nintendo Land Zelda game.

At first I thought it was pointless since the extra damage is hardly threatening but then no heart refills and I was like

Will this mode be available from the start?

Yes. C'mon, man, it's in the OP.

Hey, the Hero Mode trailer was removed. :(

The heck, why is the video down now?

It was just showing the Hero Mode, how to activate it on the main menu, when you select your save. Then there was a split screen where you could see that enemies make double the damage and you don't get hearts, that was it.

I hope they haven't screwed with the camera. TWW had the most heavenly right-stick camera controls ever.
Yeah! I agree. I don't know what it was about it, but it always felt really fluid, intuitive, and just effortless.

Had to mute the video because the guy talks like half his mouth is numb. Why do they put people like this in positions they're not trained for?
Maybe half his mouth is numb. Like, maybe his face is partially paralyzed? Or maybe it's just how he talks? Who knows. In the off chance that he does have an actual impairment, as you suggest, I think it'd be cool if you were more sensitive about it.

And here in year 2013 Nintendo just can't design an uncluttered UI. Holy sh!t that's an screen full!

Good to hear about hero mode available from the start thought. XD Complaining works to some extent.

Too bad about not having the option to put the user's face in the selfies. Would have been hilarious.

Dammit, I wanted to see it. :(

Yeah, Hero Mode def. should be played on if you've played the game before. Can't wait.

The Hero mode in skyward sword was extremely easy so I'm not really excited about it, especially after getting one of those heart medals, where at that point ( iirc after the 3rd dungeon or so) I completely forgot that I was even playing on hero mode.

This remake better allow you to skip cut scenes after you beat it and want to play it again, unlike skyward sword <.<

...hate me...
Wind Waker is my favorite game that I've never beaten. And this is why. Finally unbroken and more.

I welcome thee, Wind Waker Game of the Forever edition.

? SS did let you do just that. For the very first time in the series even.

It did once you beat it in the regular mode, then the hero mode unlocks where I beat it rather quickly. But when I beat hero mode, it overrided the data and created a new file which wasn't a hero mode. I wanted to speed run the game again but I found out that the hero mode wasn't there anymore and thus ..my hope for another speed run was shattered as I was forced to start the game in new game where it wouldn't let me skip cut scenes.

And unlike Skyward Sword, you can't boost potions to make you recover more health or make you invincible. So Wind Waker's Hero Mode should be even harder than Skyward Sword's.

But red and blue potions and elixir soup already refill all of your hearts. You can get blue potions from Forest Haven for 4 boko baba seeds, but you have to unlock green and blue at the shop on Windfall Island for 15 chu jellies of their respective colors each. Fairies restore 10 hearts and are easy to get.

Restorative items in Wind Waker:
  • Red potion - Restores all hearts. Available at Windfall shop from start. Buy for 20 rupees or 5 red chu jellies.
  • Green potion - Restores all magic. Available at Windfall shop after giving 15 green chu jellies. Buy for 10 rupees or 5 green chu jellies.
  • Blue potion - Restores all hearts and magic. Available at Windfall shop after giving 15 blue chu jellies. Buy for 60 rupees or 5 blue chu jellies. Also available at Forest Haven for 4 boko baba seeds.
  • Fairy - Restores 10 hearts. Automatically revives you if you die. Find at any fairy fountain.
  • Elixir soup - Restores all hearts, all magic, doubles attack power until hit. Available after story event. Free of charge. Can only hold 1 bottle at a time, but each bottle holds 2 servings.

Okay that's weird. What does it override it with after you beat hero mode? Just a before-the-boss-save?

I've yet to venture into Hero Mode in SS.
